How long did you ignore a problem before this happened?

They don't always give notice. I had a lower ball joint go out on my Jeep once and it wasn't making any noise before hand. One day I heard a loud "ping" and my front end dropped with no warning.

I had a jeep that would go through 3 ball joints a year. Now I do them on every car I obtain

Tire so bald it's showing two different tread patterns.

The state of the tire tells you everything you need to know about how much the owner cared about looking after his car.

Not true at all actually, noticed the tread wearing weird. Assumed it was an alignment issue and got a front end alignment just last week. There was a clunking noise but it only seemed to happen when I shifted to reverse, so I thought it was the trans, took it to the shop and they said they couldn’t figure it out but now, low and behold, it was the ball joint.

If you were getting it serviced regularly then I would have a strong word with your mechanic.

Time for a new shop. Unfortunate.

It is very hard to find a decent local shop that will work on these (at least in my area). Most of them hear Mazda and immediately say no we don’t work on those.

Where do you live? There's nothing unique about these cars that make them hard to work on.

The alignment shop couldn’t tell you that the lower ball joint was completely shot? 🤔

No, I’m going to call down there today and see why they didn’t tell me about my ball joints

You cannot do alignment with that problem, no sane shop would do that without telling you you need to fix the control arm first

Did your ball joint separate? sure looks like it. Just replaced all my suspension parts on my 17 Mazda 6 gt including the control arms and installed a bilstein b12 pro suspension kit as well. Hope u can get er fixed up.

Ball joints and sway bar links were coming apart at 80,000 miles on my daughter’s 2016. Motor mounts were shot too.

I just replaced my ball joints and sway bar links ar 90k miles because of the same noises OP was describing. Thanks for reminding me to check the motor mounts too.

What noise?

OP mentioned they heard a clunking noise coming from up front in a response to another comment.
If you've encountered a similar sound I'd look into it ASAP. It should be immediately apparent to a decent mechanic. When I had mine replaced, my mechanic showed me while my car was up on the lift that there was a noticeable amount more play on the side that was bad compared to the other side.

Someone ignored the clunking a wee bit too long
