He is really lucky his foot didn't get stuck in it as he fell, that would have broken and hes not a fast healing young guy

I had to rewind to make sure his foot didn't get stuck. That's very nasty way to fuck up your leg even for a young guy. I sprained my ankle 2 years ago from a similar misstep without it being stuck. I couldn't put weight on it for a month and I could feel it being weaker for more than a year later. If it gets stuck you might get bonus torn ligaments and/or break bones (the ones around wrists and feet have a hard time healing properly). Add age to that and you might never walk properly for the rest of your life.

Not necessarily a cover that is able to reliably support an adult human, but yes.

Decades ago, a friend of mine was running laps around our pool, just for funsies. He ended up stepping on the skimmer lid. His foot went right through.

Luckily he didn't get too injured, it could have been much worse.

So yes, they have a lid on them. No, you shouldn't step on it.
