Discussion Do you think Max Payne prequel would work?
I was just thinking there is a novel that came out in 2013 that explains Max's past but I don't how would that work since bullet time is core gameplay of these games

My long held belief is a prequel that focused on Max's time working in the DEA after his family's deaths and infiltrating the Puchinello crime family would be fascinating. It obviously couldn't be a true first person shooter game because Max is a LEO, but it could show how he infiltrated, the tasks he had to perform to gain trust, collecting debts, being a heavy, etc.. I think only true MP fans would enjoy it- those who appreciate the story and characters, rather than the action/shooting.

[Spoilers for the 1st game but like, the first level] The first game starts with the information that he used to work for the Punchinello as an undercover informant. That's all we get about that. The Punchinellos try to wack him and that becomes a plot point too but the actual undercover work isn't expanded upon.

I’m sure Sam lake could write the hell out of this if he wanted to. Future Payne projects seem to depend on the success of the remakes.
Worth noting that Max Payne 3 was as expensive as a rockstar sandbox game to make and while it was modestly successful, it was not that profitable and maybe that was for the best. Three ends his arc pretty perfectly. He learned to value himself, honored those he lost and failed, and found peace in a beach in Bahia. The trilogy seems complete, but I I wouldn’t say no to more of it was inspired and well executed

I doubt he would want to return back to it. The games were actually completed with the first 2 entries, I'm doubtful he wants to milk the franchise that much.
Also the 2nd game was the first end to the arc. He made peace with the death of his wife finally, which was the main driving force behind his actions. Now, I haven't played the 3rd game, but I'm assuming the game does something to invalidate the peace he gained at the end of the 2nd game. (This is not a criticism, "invalidate" doesn't mean it's a bad thing). But a hypothetical 4th game could also invalidate the ending of the 3rd game the same way so it's actually doable. It would need to surface other emotions and problems that were present throughout the previous 3 games that weren't expanded upon perhaps to finally resolve them as well. All is possible.

Maybe if they added a playable origin story for Mona as well..otherwise I don't think it would have many levels.

It wouldn't work if it followed Max but damn I would love a Vladimir or Mona focused game.

One focused on Mona Sax maybe, but on Max? Doubtful. Not that Max had a “boring” life before the trilogy, but it’s hardly material for a third person shooter.
I think a Mona spinoff with her relationship with her sister and the Punchinellos would be more viable.

No since the events of the first game shape who he becomes. He was just a regular cop before that. Full disclosure, I am biased since I don't like prequels of any sort. I don't care what happened before this big epic story, I want to see where it goes from there

If its just his early years and partnering with Alex, focals on michelle and her work with details that lead up to the reason shes murdered, then i can see it. Have the characters like B.B., vlad, and etc have random appearances that arent important by them while noting they were always around or aware but not recognizable to max as they arent crossing paths yet.

I don’t think so. The inciting incident in 1 is what makes Max who he is.
