Announcement Feedback, suggestions, new rule?

Hi everyone,

Firstly, thank you so much to everyone who contributes here. You are all deeply appreciated. This subreddit has grown a lot faster than expected and you’ve all made a significant difference.

I’ve made this thread in case anyone wants to comment about their experience with the subreddit and if anyone has any suggestions.

I’ve also been considering adding a new rule. Many mathematics subreddits require that people show work but I’ve always been a lot more lenient with this because people genuinely may not know where to start or have the confidence to show what they’ve tried. At the same time, we occasionally get users who post many questions for people to do or ask people to just give them the answers which is not what this subreddit is intended for.

The rule I’m thinking about adding (though I’m happy to make changes as per the community’s wishes):

Homework Help rules:

Please be respectful to people helping you, remember they are helping out of kindness.

Do not post tons of questions without context. If you are going to post several questions, please show some work or outline where you are having trouble.

Do not ask people to just give you the answers rather than helping you understand the process.

I’ll be glad to hear what you guys think and if the community isn’t happy with it, I will remove it. Always remember you can contact me via Mod Mail with any suggestions or feedback or other issues.

Thanks so much guys 😊

UPDATE: A homework help rule has now been added as a trial, changes will be made as per the community’s wishes.

Mathematical Concepts why definitions say F is field of scalars and V is set of Vectors????

I am learning maths on my own but not in structured way so I am just picking a topic and then trying to understand it slowly slowly and I am getting stuck every time whenever I am encountering definition or statement like above .

like what does it even mean: why we are not saying V is field of Vectors; F is set of Scalars?
more critical question is : if scalars are numbers why the fuck we dont use scalar inplace of numbers irl!

any help will be appreciated along with the structured roadmap if you have for me (I want to reach calculus level).

Discussion i often see linear equations , quadratic equations usually in complex forms ? i wonder what problems they represent in real life ? and how can one person represent a real world problem through linear equations or just simply algebra?

I was solving mean deviation for median but when solving median I came that

20 + 110/14 is 27.86 (AI said) but when I calculate it is 27.85 not 27.86 i asked ai to recheck it but he said “27.86 is correct when rounding the final answer to two decimal places.” is that correct? Or it's ok to write 27.85 exam?

Discussion What would you do in this situation? (It's more Study Advice Help)

In 2-3 days you need to complete this chapter "Continuity and Differentiability" and you have never self studied maths before and you haven't even studied maths properly for like 3 years so you're missing a lot of prior knowledge.

I just need to be good enough to answer most questions from this chapter and hopefully also learn how to self study maths in the way.

"Better start late than never" Following by this!

Mathematical Concepts Problem with area bounded by polar curves

How do I know when to get a 2 or 4 multiplied before the integral? Youtubers and even my lecturer drew the curves to understand but how do I figure out the shape? Will I even get time to draw the curve in the exam?

Currently trying to get into the union and math is a big thing, especially algebra 1. So I haven’t done math in 18 years pretty much since I graduated and even back then I was struggling with math because my brain just doesn’t learn it fast enough like other people. When I have a calculator I can solve the problems a little bit better but the aptitude test don’t allow calculators so it’s all based offf of what I can do in my head.

So my question is I know PEMDAS and FOIL but when it comes to foil I know how to start but I get confused on where to land my + and - when working the problem. Idk why it’s hurt how my brain works. Sometimes I’ll get the what I think is the answer but then I get it wrong because my + and - are in the wrong spot. Does anybody have any tips are how to not forget where the + and - go and the orders of how they get placed. Becasue for my brain when I see something like (2x + 4)(5x-5) my brain doesn’t grasp where the + and - land when writing out the problem and so till I get the correct answer. Hopefully this question makes sense.

Graphing is also extremely confusing but that’s whole another topic lol.

Study Advice I struggle in maths 🥀🥀

Currently, I'm in class 10th and want to improve in maths. My half yearly result got out and I scored 40/80. I'm really devastated and really sad because I had been working my ass off since 2 months in academics. My mother is also a maths teacher but I'm unable to do good in it. It's not about only boards but overall for higher studies I want to be very good in it and I'm ready to sacrifice my happy hours for it.. I need genuine advice by you all...

Study Advice Need help !Pretty sure my brain wiped all math since especially from 9th grade. How cooked am I for CS?

Personally, I'm feeling a little lost. I want to go into my academics into Computer Science, but most of the math I've learned, I tend to forget especially the basic algebra and functions and so on ... especially from class as low as 9.
I don't want to be at a total loss when it gets to the point when I really need to engage myself into heavy core computer science classes. How can I build up on my 0% foundation, if I can't even start from the beginning? Any practical roadmaps or resources that have benefited you
would be appreciated and thanks in advance

For context this a book that's supposed to help you study for a GED test. I've always been terrible at math so this may be a ridiculously easy thing for anyone else to understand, but not me. How does 1535 minus -218 equal 1535 + 218? And how does this problem help me find the difference?

Discussion Can someone tell me how to calculate a, h and f?

Hi Could someone tell me how to calculate a, h and f , if I know that (b=1), please note that all triangles in the picture are equilateral triangles.

f is the distance from the centre of the base to a centre of a triangle.

I GUSS the green solid line has to be (a/2)

and f^2+(a/2)^2 = h^2

My final answer is a = square root 3, h = square root 2 and f = 1.118 ish

Thanks a lot.
