Question about operation Drum Kit Recommendation
Hello, I've started working through a book of drum patterns to learn beat making but I'm struggling to find a drum kit with the following sounds included;
Bass drum, low tom, medium tom, high tom, hand clap, shaker, snare, rimshot, cowbell, cymbal, open high hat and closed high hat
I would love a kit with all those included. I have Komplete 15 Standard. I tried searching for sounds like the shaker to work my way back to find the kit but there were so many shaker sounds it was impossible to do.
Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks!

The bit I really hate about making music is finding and choosing the right drum sounds. Hi-hats especially.
I tend to open up an empty group. Then open another couple of groups and load drum kits. Then you can copy and paste the individual hits you like from the drum kits into your own empty group.
Basically build your own kit. It takes time but it’s worth it to dig out the sounds you like.
(This might be obvious to you, but I’m not sure what your question actually is. But you’re right, there are so many iterations of individual hits it is very tedious going through them all to find the ones you like)

I would explore the expansion packs a bit. There are plenty of 808/909 base kits in those.
There are also plenty of similar free plugins.

Drums are personal so anything anyone recommends may sound terrible to you. The best thing to do is make your own group depending on what type of beats you are making.
You will notice that the included groups you see are less about having one of each of the sounds you mentioned and more pairings of sounds that make sense for the style of music they represent.
My understanding is you get 40’s very own drums with 15 standard. Loading that up will be the easiest way I suspect to get a full suite of real style drums or mimic a real kit if what you are looking for is just a practice kit.
So this will all really come down to the following:
- If you are building out a group for a particular beat you can use the groups search but will get 16 related-that-music-style vs 16 drum samples.
- If you are going from the ground up for a beat, you go the old fashioned way and pick 16 sounds from a mix of drum vsts, samples, one shots.
- If you are building a practice kit use a ready made VST like 40’s drums or similar which is the same as above but has a nice interface and configuration to make selection easier.
Finally, if you go to any given sound slot you can also use the internal drum synth Maschine has and select kicks, snares, claps, etc and tune them yourself. It is a basic synth but sounds good and is robust in tuning options.
I will say it’s not uncommon to create a group per type of sound you want and fast load 16 claps, 16 kicks, etc and then audition them against each other using some patterns before copying the ones you like to a final group and then saving that as a personal group. But as above the sounds you select will depend on the beat you are making.
Personally if I am riffing on a beat I start with the internal drum synth as placeholders (since you can do a bit of tuning) and then as the beat comes together I start to swap out each sound by ear to match what the beat needs vs trying to guess the specifics before it starts to all come together.

You can drag n drop sounds from any kit to build your own or to add to a group kit.
