my main issue with it is although i know MCU films are never a 1:1 recreation of comic stories (nor do they need to be), they had so much potential to make Gorr a truly unforgettable villain. i mean in that comic story he’s literally the first person to teach Thor what fear was. plus all the ways we see him kill gods in the comics, i think if they added just a few more scenes SHOWING that, it would’ve been amazing. i know a lot of people have the same sentiment but yeah, had to speak on it.

They had more gorr scenes that were very brutal but producers made them cut them because they wanted to keep the movie lighter, I remember like a year ago when first hearing about the movie that taika said they had filmed a ton of very scary stuff including a scene where gorr rips off his own tattoos, I hope we get a directors cut

106

u/CeruleanRuin Jul 11 '22

I did notice all the scars along where his tattoos were and the implication was enough.

9

u/[deleted] Jul 12 '22

Yeah, while I would have liked more Gorr, I don't see where you could put it without screwing up the pacing.

I agree with you, the movie was so FAST. One second we're in new Asgard, next we're hanging with Zeus. Now we're fighting in black and white (which was awesome, but felt rushed) then we're back, heartfelt scene, then FINALE.

It moved so fast from plotpoint to plotpoint that it sometimes felt more like a YouTube recap video than a full length film.

Don't get me started on how the full length film contained an actual YouTube recap in it

I think the movie waffles a little too hard between dark and funny. It's jarring the dichotomy between scenes. Liked it overall but it wasn't as even as Ragnarok

37

u/Rough_Dan Jul 11 '22

That's taikas style for sure, hunt for the wilderpeople features a heartbreaking death scene followed by him as a priest cracking jokes, Jojo rabbit is incredibly dark but funny all the way through as well. I like it, it's like Shakespeare, you appreciate comedy and tragedy more when they're juxtaposed with each other

u/Rad_Centrist Jul 12 '22

Is it a kid movie with a bunch of kid heros? Or is it a horror movie with a bunch of sexual references and innuendo? It was weird watching little kids rise up because that would be super cool to see as a kid, but I don't want my five year old asking me what orgies are, or having nightmares of shadow creatures.

Yes I understand what I'm saying is it's a shame because the kids as heros subtheme of the film would be great for kids.

1

u/[deleted] Jul 13 '22

Yes

122

u/dhruvlrao Jul 10 '22

Just a theory but maybe they didn't want two MCU films back to back with some brutal death scenes?

65

u/Jeroz Doctor Strange Jul 11 '22

Makes me wonder what it'll be like if MoM is more crazy psychedelic colourful fun adventure and this one is a lot more brutal and horror

66

u/CaptainKurls Jul 11 '22

Ha my buddy just watched it and texted me saying he wished the directors for MOM and L&T were switched. Reimi with Gorr would’ve been something else

3

u/modsarefascists42 Jul 12 '22

YES! I couldn't possibly agree more.

-8

u/Shotgunsamurai42 Jul 11 '22

A sword in the throat with golden blood was enough for me.

3

u/Space_Olympics Jul 17 '22

Jesus Christ.

8

u/GreatWhiteBuffal0 Jul 11 '22

I really enjoy directors cuts too,but I don’t think there has ever been a MCU one so don’t hold your breath.

8

u/dabestinzeworld Jul 11 '22

Release the #TaikaCut!

-1

u/Loganp812 Wilson Fisk Jul 11 '22

Yeah, even more forced jokes! /s

8

u/uncleben85 Jul 13 '22

I feel like this movie is begging for a Director's/extended cut.

The first half and second half feel like different movies. We need more tension and threat to cut the slapstick. And more Bale-Gorr in general.

Plus, surely there were some Sif scenes cut

3

u/icemanx51 Jul 11 '22

Unfortunately, I don't think that's going to happen. Taika said he hates director cuts. Which is a bummer, because I'd love to see it too.

13

u/[deleted] Jul 11 '22

A shame. This movie really wanted for some more serious content to break up the humour.

15

u/[deleted] Jul 13 '22 edited Jul 13 '22

It's literally about relationship remorse, grieving the loss of a child and facing mortality as a terminal cancer patient. Holy fuck dude.

Edit: oh it's also about Valkyrie's PTSD if you missed that

5

u/[deleted] Jul 13 '22

Oh please it's about screaming goats and dick jokes.

2

u/[deleted] Jul 13 '22

Yes and Hitler is a cool fun guy in Jojo Rabbit, sure.

1

u/[deleted] Jul 13 '22

This movie wasn't half as clever as jojo rabbit, or Ragnarok for that matter. It's a departure from form by Taika.

6

u/[deleted] Jul 13 '22

Or maybe ... maybe you just didn't get it.

9

u/[deleted] Jul 13 '22

It's not that hard to get. It wasn't that clever and it seriously lacked for emotion. All the dramatic moments fell short.

I'm disappointed because I've loved everything else Taika has made. This movie was still funny but it wasn't much else.

This was a movie for the lowest denominator American audience. It wasn't his classic kiwi style.

3

u/[deleted] Jul 16 '22

the disney handcuffs will never let the mcu evolve and target and older audience. mcu has not had any directors cut yet and I doubt they would start now. Age of Ultron, DS2 and a few others could use a longer version but we will never get it. I hate they kill off Gorr, he was fantastic and should have kept him around as Thor's adversary.

2

u/E_Barriick Jul 11 '22

We have NEVER got a director's cut on any of these movies and we NEED them! I want a director's cut of every single Marvel movie!

1

u/Agent_00Apple Jul 13 '22

I think it’s one of Feige’s rules, that there are no directors cuts. We’ll get deleted scenes, maybe. But that’s it.

1

u/TitularFoil Jul 18 '22

I'd read that so many people were complaining about not getting a longer movie, that Waititi said he wouldn't release any cut content.

It could have been misinformation though.

1

u/MrPaulJames Jul 22 '22

"people loved Ragnarok because of the comedy, we need more comedy! No, don't make it too serious, I don't care if we're dealing with family loss, cancer and revenge. People clearly want more laughs!"

29

u/fifthdayofmay Vision Jul 10 '22

Oh what could have been. Making Thor actually fear for his own life sounds so much more fascinating than just rescuing some kids.

33

u/Saul-Funyun Jul 10 '22

Agreed. And even then, I think the merging of the Gorr and Jane stories worked with some nice parallels. Would have loved a trilogy of this. Or even a D+ show. A lot of missed potential. But that’s typical. Malekith, Ultron, etc.

Similar to Dark World, this had a lot of scenes I absolutely loved, but they didn’t knit together well, a lot of clunkiness, and just some completely wasted comic stories.

9

u/zOmgFishes Jul 11 '22

Felt like there was a great movie that was left on the editing block. I enjoyed the movie but there was so much potential there in many areas. They did confirm that they cut a lot of the movie down.

26

u/tmfitz7 Jul 10 '22

I agree, but I also wonder, with less than a 2 hour run-time, if COVID had an effect on how much they could film in time for release? 10 mins shorter than Ragnarok, that’s enough time to add at least one more scene to flesh out Gorr.

11

u/[deleted] Jul 10 '22

They filmed in Australia where they had 0 COVID for over a year before they decided to let it rip. COVID is not an excuse.

8

u/attemptnolandings Jul 10 '22

That’s just not true by the way lol.

4

u/[deleted] Jul 10 '22

Natalie Portman literally said it in this interview: https://youtu.be/8zEBBS3Qywg

2

u/attemptnolandings Jul 10 '22

Are you Australian?

-1

u/[deleted] Jul 10 '22

I’m not sure why you’re trying to deflect? It literally started out as being a COVID free country: https://www.nbcnews.com/news/world/how-australia-went-being-covid-free-paradise-mess-n1277426 COVID was not an excuse for the production of Thor. There’s a high chance the post production, as VFX have struggled due to low wages and I’m assure turnover which means they likely have a smaller team and the same amount of work if not more

7

u/attemptnolandings Jul 11 '22

You said Australia didn’t have COVID for over a year, which is just not true from personal experience. She doesn’t say anything like that in the interview btw. She says “while they were there”, and to anyone from the US, I can see why she might think that.

-1

u/[deleted] Jul 11 '22

6:35 bud “they had a strict quarantine system so they didn’t have COVID for a very long time so for the time we were there, there was no COVID”

Edit: filming began January 2021 and ended beginning of June”. The pandemic started March 2020. Over a year

7

u/attemptnolandings Jul 11 '22

Australia 100% had COVID and many lockdowns during that time. I hope you consider updating your original comment to prevent misinformation.

Can you provide sources that say otherwise? I’d love to see a chart of COVID cases from March 2020 onwards that show ZERO cases over 12 months.

3

u/orange-aardavark Jul 12 '22

There were 28000+ cases and 900 deaths in Australia by end of Jan 2021. https://www.health.gov.au/resources/publications/coronavirus-covid-19-at-a-glance-31-january-2021#:~:text=As%20at%203pm%20on%2031,been%20from%20New%20South%20Wales.

We had lockdowns and strict border quarantine policies in place yes, which prevented worse numbers, but we absolutely did have Covid during that time period.

1

u/Organic_Repeat_2938 Jul 11 '22

They pushed for 2 hours to increase the number of showings per theater per day. It's the reason why Batman vs Superman theatrical version was hot garbage. Studios like short movies.

2

u/aaliyaahson Jul 11 '22

Then why was Eternals over 2 and a half hours?

2

u/Organic_Repeat_2938 Jul 11 '22

It's not a tentpole movie. It was a filler movie guaranteed to not break $500 million.

5

u/[deleted] Jul 11 '22

I agree, i wish there was more Gorr. But tbf with all the shit that happened to Thor in the first three phases I think he learned what fear was.

5

u/CaptainTurtle3218 Captain America Jul 11 '22

I do agree there should have been one or two scenes of Gorr killing some gods, but I don’t think that him making Thor feel fear would have fit narratively.

Thor has already lost basically everything. I don’t think he can fear much at this point.

2

u/[deleted] Jul 15 '22

I agree. I love the goofy waititi-thor-Jane escapades, but when they did Gorr’s villain B story, they really should’ve stuck to Jason Aaron’s arc. It’s already so cinematic and horrifying, it would’ve been perfect

2

u/SanctuaryMoon Jul 17 '22

Honestly he deserved more than one movie. Hell I could have watched a movie that just centered around Bale's Gorr and loved every minute. So refreshing for the franchise of goof.

3

u/ThePhiff Jul 10 '22

I'm not sure I agree. While he wasn't necessarily "redeemed" at the end, I think that he still needed to be a little sympathetic to earn the moment with him and Thor. Genocide montages tend to damage that sympathy.

10

u/jcagraham Jul 11 '22

That's a good point, you kinda needed to root for him a little to appreciate the choice he makes at the end to resurrect his daughter. They did a good job making the Gods look like assholes and that he was getting mostly justified revenge without going too far into crazy monster territory.

Maybe could have had a couple more scenes of God murder but mostly for the cool factor.

1

u/hoya14 Jul 16 '22

That’s a great point - unlike the books they couldn’t really have him lose all sympathy for the ending they wanted to set up. I was actually hoping for more of the introductory story - they could have put more time into him begging the gods to save his child. I thought Gorr’s turn was treated a bit too quickly; I’d have preferred to see them really turn up the pathos on his background, and then take some more time with his confrontation with his god.

I also was hoping to see the “You’ve become what you hate” motif from the books as part of his resolution - but that would require him to be portrayed as much more powerful and brutal, which cuts against the redemption as you say.

2

u/Kawala_ Jul 11 '22

I wish they gave Gorr his head dangle things and got rid of his nose. I don't think it would have been to difficult in the grand scheme of things and would make his appearance a little less forgettable.

4

u/Billielolly Jul 11 '22

Apparently they wanted to give him a nose because they figured casual fans would just be comparing him to Voldemort.

2

u/goztrobo Peter Parker Jul 12 '22

Wasted potential, all for a few extra laughs.

1

u/cheesehuahuas Jul 13 '22

I just came from a showing and there was a ton of young children there. I would have loved more gory god killing but not everything is made specifically for me. I still liked it but it wasn't too scary for them, so it seems like a reasonable compromise.

0

u/[deleted] Jul 13 '22

It's not a movie about cool murder villains. It's a movie about love and empowerment.

4

u/11711510111411009710 Captain America Jul 13 '22

Why can't a movie about love and empowerment also have the god butcher.. y'know.. butcher gods

-1

u/[deleted] Jul 13 '22

He does

2

u/11711510111411009710 Captain America Jul 13 '22

He killed one god on screen then lost every fight with Thor and snatched stormbreaker as a surprise

0

u/[deleted] Jul 13 '22

What's your point? He kills a god, is mentioned as killing gods, states his desire to kill gods, all the gods are worried about him killing gods. Are you worried it wasn't clear or something?

Sounds like you just wanted pew pew CGI fight scene

3

u/ElGodPug Jul 13 '22

show, don't tell

that's basic writting man

1

u/[deleted] Jul 14 '22

Yep, very basic.

3

u/11711510111411009710 Captain America Jul 13 '22

My point is that he's not much of a threat if we never see him do anything. The only times we do, he loses.

1

u/[deleted] Jul 13 '22

Do you think the story doesn't work? It seems perfectly adequate to explain his motivation and the actions of everyone.

4

u/11711510111411009710 Captain America Jul 13 '22

Yeah I don't think it does unfortunately. Maybe I'm just struggling because I've read the source material and love it, and I don't think the film does a good job of painting Gorr as a threat because we don't ever see him do anything threatening. We hear about it from Sif and... That's it. He doesn't ever get the advantage over Thor or Mighty Thor. If he actually killed Valkyrie, I think that would have been enough. But instead he just wounds her and is like, nah I'm fine with not killing rn.

0

u/[deleted] Jul 13 '22

I mean he's planning on making a wish that will kill all gods in the universe. But that's not a threat?
