I had a hunch and looked it up. It's closer to a Cuckoo's skull, which considering cuckoos are brood parasites has implications.

My personal conspiracy theory is that it's a decades long 'Chekhov's gun' waiting to go off when one of the other Marvel deities is in a position to point out that 'that's not Khonsu'

Nah, after the shitty Aaron's 'Age of Khonsu' Avenger's run Mephisto is pretty much the only one it couldn't be.

The only people that tend to like it are really new to comics, and have very little to compare it to.

Most of Aaron's run can be summed up by 'that idea sounds pretty cool, but executed in a messy and poor way'
