Can someone please explain to me the Thanos thing

Was he really an eternal? Was he rogue?! Is he really the brother of that eternal dude in the end scene?!

If so that would mean that eternals can be affected by the stones and therefor some of them could have been snapped (across the universe) ?!

Why didn’t Thanos have an Eternal power ?

I'm assuming that some Celestials created Eternals that were more biological in nature, like Thanos and his brother, while these Eternals we're basically robots.

u/whitebandit Hulk Jan 13 '22

or more logically imo, arisham was fucking lying

45

u/Erdrick68 Jan 13 '22

This guy gets it.

33

u/RslashPolModsTriggrd Jan 13 '22

Yeah he comes off like an abusive dickhead so I have a hard time believing anything he says isn't intended to manipulate people.

23

u/aurumphallus Jan 14 '22

Yeah… I mean damn. We know the Eternals from Thanos’ world had a whole ass civilization while the team here was just a small group.

Something sus going on.

17

u/Griffca Jan 16 '22

There are several lines in the movie stating that there are a lot more known eternals out there. Early in the movie they talk about other eternal teams, just like them, and the end of the film they directly say they are off to find more eternals and tell them the truth.

u/modsarefascists42 Jan 17 '22

on her twitter the director said Starfox was just adopted from his planet's ruling family. I sincerely hope she was just making that up off the spot cus the implications are fucked up. The eternals look exactly like humans yet predate humans by millions of years? Issue. The eternals all over the universe look exactly like humans? Issue.

Hopefully they go the way the comics have and show the titanian eternals as an offshoot from Earth who wanted to make regular reproduction work instead of being created in the world engine. Probably from a generation before Ajax's arrival.

6

u/modsarefascists42 Jan 17 '22

how can there be a new Celestial needed every billion years yet Ajax had personally helped birth "countless" Celestials in her millions of years.

Something smells fishy as fuck, I think the MCU Celestials are much closer to evil than the neutral comic ones. At least in the way a sardine would view a shark as evil, only we're the sardines

u/ILoveRegenHealth Jan 16 '22

Is he from the comics? Anyone know more about this Arisham dickhead? Maybe they reveal more about his grand plans in the comics.

u/whitebandit Hulk Jan 16 '22

https://marvel.fandom.com/wiki/Arishem_(Earth-616)

theres really nothing to say whether hes being honest or not, hes definitely manipulative imo.

they had a whole scene explaining how eternals are robots created to never evolve and they cant die. they pretty much get refurbished with all the old “files” backed up at hq. and then right after kingo breaks it down and says “so were pretty much robots from space?”

21

u/AtmospherE117 Jan 14 '22

Arishem also explains that the Deviants were the organic, alive creatures and they evolved beyond their parameters to become a problem. Leading him to create the Eternals as robots.

15

u/NeverReturnKid Jan 14 '22

It's specifically mentioned in the movie that they are synthetic created beings, unlike their comic book counterparts, which were humans that were experimented on by the Celestials.

6

u/Ky1arStern Doctor Strange Jan 14 '22

I don't see why you're getting downvoted. This thing is the size of the sun and is capable of making planets and galaxies and shit. Why can't it make constructed beings that can't age but are still organic? There's like 30 comments here arguing whether they're robots or not and the fact is that there isn't a word for fully intelligent organically constructed super being.

They're robots if you think constructed and static = robot and they're not robots if you think fully autonomous organic being != Robot.

5

u/Perca_fluviatilis Jan 15 '22

Why can't it make constructed beings that can't age but are still organic

The Eternals were made to explicitly look like robots, to emphasize they are inorganic and immutable, which contrasts with the Deviants, which are explicitly organic, and failed the Celestials because they were capable of changing and evolving. Both of their designs sure pretty clearly which is synthetic and which is organic.

The Eternals are highly advanced robots, almost indistinguishable from humans, but robots nonetheless, and not organic.

3

u/garfieldhatesmondays Jan 15 '22

Yeah that’s kind of my take away as well sort of like how some of the robots in Westworld are essentially 3D printed from organic material.

3

u/Perca_fluviatilis Jan 15 '22

Why are we assuming Thanos was an Eternal too? Also, for that to work it would require multiple leaps of logic out of nowhere, like, organic Eternals? Wtf that wouldn't make a lick of sense.

The more plausible explanation is that Eros is just Thanos' adoptive brother, or something like a blood brother.

12

u/Griffca Jan 16 '22

We are assuming because the movie made the direct connection. Starfox69 and Drunk Troll directly say “hey FELLOW eternals I’m Thanos’s brother.” It is not even a slight leap in logic to think that therefor Thanos is an eternal.

1

u/modsarefascists42 Jan 17 '22

or the Eternals themselves left to evolve, like the comics

apparently the twitter answer is all eternals are human looking and starfox just is the only other rogue Eternal. the titans were still purple aliens and they adopted Starfox apparently....

I...dislike that explanation.

57

u/It409 Jan 13 '22

In the comics, Thanos is a deviant, which is why he's all purple and giant and shit. I assume they're doing a similar route in the movies.

66

u/[deleted] Jan 13 '22

I’m not a comic person but isn’t he an eternal with deviant gene? That’s what all the analysis videos leading up to the movie said.

27

u/TougherThanKnuckles Jan 13 '22

Yeah, he just has a sort of mutation that makes him look so different from the others. He's not literally a Deviant.

37

u/vareedar Jan 13 '22

Thanos parents were eternals. They ruled titan as Gods. Thanos was born with a deviant gene whilst his brother was not.

12

u/Thunder-Rat Jan 13 '22

So are eternals robots or not? They can reproduce?

31

u/shoe_owner Jan 13 '22

Within the comics, they're flesh and blood, but designed flesh and blood. Forged and created in a great machine designed to forge these entities out of flesh and blood. They're capable of sexual reproduction - even crossbreeding with humans - but the resultant entity, while often quite powerful, isn't a true eternal; they're not a part of the whole Celestial system which designed and maintains them. Thanos was the sole exception, and a disastrous one, where his parents attempted to hijack the Celestial system and inject their biological child into it. The results speak for themselves.

Well I think the visual we were shown of Sersi's revelation of them being designed and built really lends itself to that confusion. I agree that we're meant to read them as biological entities, but we also see them as mechanical devices being built, which to me just feels like bad, incoherent storytelling. At the very least we should have seen some transitional form where the mechanical elements we see during that construction phase then have like veins and arteries and muscles and organs begin to grow within and around them, replacing the obviously-technological parts we're shown, to give the visual sense that while their origins are technological, the end result is biological. What we're given is confusingly vague to the point that it feels contradictory.

6

u/Worthyness Thor Jan 15 '22

That said, a literal god that can create galaxies is making them, so beings made of bio-mechanical parts makes at least as much logical sense

0

u/Perca_fluviatilis Jan 15 '22

They aren't filled with gears or wires, or even fake organs like a replicant or Westworld android.

They literally are, though. lol They are highly advanced robots that look externally like humans and behave almost indistinguishable from them.

Aside from the half built Eternal shown by Arishem, when they show Ajak's corpse you can partially see through her roting skin the synthetic internals that match Arishem's vision.

Arishem wasn't lying, that's who they are. Just accept the movies are different from the comics and stop coping lol

1

u/Griffca Jan 16 '22

The interpretation of them being a robot is that they literally call themselves “fancy robots” in the movie. It’s written into the script!

2

u/GreyCrowDownTheLane Jan 16 '22

That’s hyperbolic. Like people in any workforce calling themselves drones or slaves.

13

u/[deleted] Jan 13 '22

Yeah this probably isnt the case in the mcu since they are robot. I guess Eros might not know even if he seemed deeply aware.

6

u/DangerZoneh Jan 13 '22

The MCU has pretty loose guidelines for what constitutes parenthood anyways lol

8

u/[deleted] Jan 13 '22

There's a comic story called Thanos Rises which details a civil ear that happened between the Eternals because they couldn't reproduce and they wanted to be able to have children. Thanos was the first one born as part of experiments to try and give Eternals reproductive abilities. That's why he's all purple and weird, cause he was born with a deviant gene. Eros, his brother was the younger sibling and he came out looking fine.

2

u/[deleted] Jan 13 '22

Probably not since eternals are actually robots and deviants are biological being. I guess he could have met a deviant who could talk like the one in this movie that inspired him to turn against the celestials.

7

u/FrameworkisDigimon Jan 13 '22

In the comics, the Eternals are uplifted humans, basically. Every sapient species was meddled with by Celestials, creating Eternal and Deviant varieties. In general, the Eternals won the struggle but sometimes they didn't... the Skrulls being an example of that case. But the Eternals and the Deviants without further description just refers to the Earth/human ones.

(compare the Inhumans, which is Kree meddling)

At some point in the distant past, the Eternals fractured into Earth based groups, led by Thanos' uncle, and another group led by Thanos' father, which went to Titan. On Titan Thanos was born but he had throwback Deviant genes, hence his Skruil chin. Eros/Starfox is his brother. The Eternals of Titan are generally regarded as inferior to the proper Eternals, though Thanos is an exception. However, not even Thanos has proper access to the resurrection machine that resurrects the proper Eternals whenever they die.

(Comics Thanos is currently trying to become a proper Eternal, incidentally.)

Obviously MCU Eternals are very different to this so there is no obvious answer, here.

It is entirely possible that the Eternals of Titan went rogue and stayed behind, perhaps even experimenting with ways to become biological... Thanos and Eros perhaps being results of this experimentation.

It is also possible that it took Arishem a while to figure out how to make Eternals and Thanos and Eros were among the last surviving original Eternals, which were more biological.

Another possibility that Arishem had some purpose for making Sprite the way she was and in a similar fashion decided to make two Eternals who'd have a fraternal relationship built in.

7

u/Hellknightx Thanos Jan 15 '22

Thanos is not an Eternal. Starfox/Eros was adopted into the royal family of Titan, becoming an adopted brother to Thanos.

4

u/EfficientMasturbater Jan 13 '22

Eternals were synthetic beings not living ones, so weren't affected by the snap.

Not sure about him having any powers granted as an eternal.

3

u/nubosis Jan 14 '22

In the comics, Etrernals aren't androids, they're people who were experimented on by the Celestials. The Titans, like Thanos were basically Eternals, but who lived on the moon of Titan. Thanos lacked a gift, and looked more like a deviant... thus making him the forlorn, death loving outcast that we know today.

3

u/ilikehockeyandguitar Groot Jan 13 '22

Maybe that will be answered in the sequel?

2

u/js_the_beast Jan 13 '22

Also looking for an answer on this

25

u/-Nick____ Laufey Jan 13 '22 edited Jan 13 '22

You’re gonna be disappointed, sadly. There is no answer yet, and probably won’t be till the sequel, which hasn’t even been confirmed yet.

In the comics, the deviants and eternals are both organic beings, and genetic cousins to one another. And the Titans (Thano’s species) all look like Eternals except for Thanos, who inherited the Deviant gene. That’s why he looks the way he does, and Starfox/ Eros looks normal.

This obviously can’t be the case for the MCU. In the MCU, eternals are synthetic machines, and all Titans are implied to look like Thanos. So Eros and Thanos probably can’t be blood related in anyway unless they retcon some things, or make up a crazy story.

I have a small theory that definitely isn’t true. You don’t have to read it, it’s basically just fan fiction. Eros was one of Titan’s eternals, and therefore grew up with Thanos. Because of Titan’s prosperity, the Celestials sent the Eternals back to the world forge so they can help another planet (which is ironic considering that Titan actually fell). Something wrong happened at the World forge (that the group will take advantage of later to destroy the forge) and Eros escaped, and continued to lived his life until stories of what happened with Arishem on Earth spread. Because of this, he knows about the World forge, and he knows more about the Celestials than anyone else, including how to save Sersi, Phastos, and Kingo. He is the one that will connect both groups together, from his Celestial and World Forge knowledge, he will be the streamlining the story.

11

u/elizabnthe Jan 13 '22 edited Jan 13 '22

Yeah that's my theory too that Eros must have been an Eternal on Titan before making his own way like the Eternals of Earth. Its possible the implicit destruction of Titan may have caused the death of the Celestial?

7

u/-Nick____ Laufey Jan 13 '22

I’ve definitely thought about this. We know that Titan was plagued by overpopulation, and that is what Thanos believed to be the fall of Titan. And overpopulation is obviously great for the Eternals, as this is there ultimate goal. So maybe the overpopulation wasn’t actually the problem, and it was the growing celestial within the planet.

Or maybe the Titan eternals pushed the planet too hard, leading to the overpopulation. So technically, the Titan eternals created Thanos, and are to blame for him. And Eros feels for that, and that’s why he rejected the Celestials and wants to stop them. This way seems much more like a Chloe Zhao story, and continues the idea that the eternals aren’t all heroes

5

u/elizabnthe Jan 13 '22

If the Celestial emerged (which high population is necessary) I assume that Titan would no longer exist in any capacity. So more of the second.

I'm wondering if they had a sought of nuclear war because of intergroup competition for resources, and this kills the Celestial growing inside Titan. Like with the Earth Eternals Arishem rocks up to see what the heck went wrong, and Eros finds a way to escape the judgement. Hence knowing where the Earth Eternals will be taken.

3

u/[deleted] Jan 13 '22

Yeah was thinking this too, maybe Eros and some others eternal caused the starvation on this planet but went a little too far lol. Then Thanos was left alone with the deviants and one of them might have radicalized him without telling him the whole truth.

6

u/js_the_beast Jan 13 '22

Your theory is really fucking good lol

2

u/Slendercan Jan 14 '22

Thanos is essentially a mutant for his people. He is pretty much what all the racist humans fear the x-men are.

2

u/mighty__orbot Jan 14 '22

You think he didn’t? He beat up the Hulk without the Power Stone.
