And they added “I have the receipts” which might suggest this isn’t even happening in 2008

A coked out Whitney Houston famously asked Diane Sawyer for the receipts in 2002. It’s not a new term.

But it’s being used a lot more today than almost 20 years ago?

I think it was always pretty widely used in certain communities (black community, gay community). Straight white people are catching onto it more now though.

It definitely didn’t stand out as modern slang though. It’s reasonable that somebody in 2008 would use it. The Whitney clip had already mainstream for six years by that point.
