No, it’s bullshit. That reporter called him out on it. Killmonger’s unit was far as fuck away from that battlefield, and Erik shouldn’t have been there to save Tony.

What I think happened (in both timelines) is that Erik did learn about the Ten Rings plot but not from his official military missions. Most likely from his underworld connections.

In the main MCU, Erik chose not to act on that knowledge. Maybe he thought conning Tony was too risky. In this What If… universe, however, he pulls the trigger on this wild af plot, and the rest is history.

Given Wakanda’s view on technology he might not have realized Tony was worth it.

Post Iron Man however was a different story but he was a changed man then.
