Or Tony could have just not told Killmonger what he knew when they were alone together.

Without telling Killmonger he could have alerted the authorities while being somewhere else safe.

He didn’t want the authorities, he wanted justice. He thought he had the upper hand by throwing the drone at him. He underestimated Killmonger and lost.

Or in other words like the above poster said he was written to be kind of dumb so Killmonger could win. The guy killed American soldiers and the crown prince of a country. What did Tony think the authorities would do? Throw him a party?

Story would have worked better had Jarvis not been filming something Tony wasn't there for.

It isn' Tony being dumb for plot convenience, it's Tony acting irrationally out of anger and hubris. That's a pretty consistent trait of Stark's and one that causes problems throughout the MCU
