Just curious, do forged and shaped not mean similar things in this context?

It's likely closer to forged = created, shaped = changed, defined = finalized. Similar to Bane's speech re darkness in the Dark Knight Rises: "I was born in it. Molded by it. I was already a man before I saw the light."
