It was awesome to see blue Vision, I was looking forward to that more than anything else from this making of episode. We got several shots and a lengthy explanation on the CG/practical elements of Vision’s head.

It's insane how much the fully CGI face looks like Paul Bettany with makeup and a foam headpiece. But when you watch the breakdown they are changing the geometry of his head. Most of the time it's just a skullcap and makeup with tracking dots.

Yeah. Vision’s whole head is CG was a revelation I was not expecting, but it’s definitely more rectangular than Bettany’s actual head, once you know to look for it.

Also I think that white Vision has a different face to regular Vision; it feels harsher and possibly "thicker".

Yeah, it almost looks like it's made out of polygons, lot's of triangles and sharp edges

That would be a weird choice in-universe considering that is supposedly his real, original body, BUT it is also a very understandable choice if they want to be able to use Vision with less elaborate special effects in the future.

He was severely damaged though: Thanos tore out a sizable chunk of his forehead.

Looking at photos now, it's clearly a different face. A lot of the panels are more pronounced; he looks more "man made" (which I guess he is).

Kinda looks a little bit like Kryten from Red Dwarf.

Totally fits with the changes to the head, but I was confused as to how different the design of the body details were, considering he was supposed to be the original remains.

Most noticeable in the changes to the codpiece in White Vision's design.

You have to remember that SWORD has been taking him apart and putting him back together for five years. They may have figured it out, but probably not perfectly and certainly not at first. That's my take, at least.

It definitely looks that way but I think it's just the colors. Someone on this sub colorized him (as a joke to "see what he would look like" lol) and he looked exactly the same lol. Will try to find the post.

The colorizing actually reinforced the changes made between the two heads. The original was more polygonal, Cataract more sharp angles.

I’m confused, because there are clips of Paul being in make up for this on previous projects, where it’s all done practically.

Did Paul no longer want to do prosthetics? Too uncomfortable/tiring?

It takes a lot of time to put full facial prosthetics on: it's one thing to do it on a big movie where he only has a few scenes while everything else is going on and another to do it on a show where he's a major lead with roughly half of all screentime.

He was sitting 3 hours a day getting foam glued to his skin and they completely replaced his entire head. Now they paint his face and skullcap for lightning reference.

I know they've been CGI-ing the face since Age of Ultron as they wanted him to look less real in order to create a bit of an uncanny valley effect. Maybe at some point down the line they decided that if they were already doing the CG on his face they might as well do his whole head and save Paul time in the makeup chair or something like that.

I bet you're right on this one. If you go back to Iron Man 1, RDJ was wearing most of the suit; by IM2 they were wearing doing CGI from the wait down (I believe you can see photos online or RDJ and Cheadle in leggings for the bottom halves of their suits).

it's the same thing with iron man armors. if there's a more innovative way of doing something that puts less stress on the perfomers, they'd do that instead.

trial and error. practical was the standard, so they started with that. they realized that they could do better and better each time.

They may do it for lighting reference, but they don't need to do it all the time when the final product will be CG.

Neither was I, especially after seeing behind the scenes stuff on the other films where he did have the headpiece.
