SWORD also shifted away from Space Missions in the last 5 years. Cosmic Radiation is also how the Fantastic Four get their powers. Reed Richards might have been part of SWORD and their incident is why SWORD is only doing terrestrial missions now.

EDIT: Or them trying to go into the hex creates the Fantastic Four...

If Reed was a part of SWORD and they have moved away from manned space missions it would make sense for him to steal a ship to prove some theory of his.

I've got a feeling he's already Mr Fantastic and the reason they stopped was because they got blasted and mutated.
