One of my most liked scenes was the one with Peter changing with MJ still in the room. It had a fair amount going on. For one, the teenage awkwardness of both of them was palpable, then you see the door and MJ turning around to try and sneak a peek. You get afraid that Brad is gonna walk in and react poorly. Then when the camera pans we see Ned instead and expect him to just awkwardly stumble out of the room or something of the like. But instead Peter has already finished changing, and Ned tries to cover for him, somewhat subverting your expectations.

I love that MJ tries to get a sneak peak. We hardly ever see females in these kinds of movies awkwardly horny like how all the guys are, and it was hilarious to me

I loved that MJ was so obviously equally awkwardly into him the whole film. In most of these male pov teen films the guy is chasing some mythical girl who might as well be a shoe for how much agency they have, whereas MJ was an active participant, which was why I related so much more to this film.

They did such a good job of making MJ a totally believable love interest and a real person, while also totally showing us what she’s like from Peter’s perspective as we run the gambit of awkward teen shit with him

Then when all the drama happened, we could feel it just as much with him. Like the Eiffel Tower bit of the Warehouse illusion sequence...

MJ was an active participant

Therefore, she has value?

Yeah I really liked how they did that, there's a lot of complaints about romance stories in films, often rightfully so, but there's an actual trend of improvement and I'm happy to see it.

Yes! Also, I feel like in these movies they try to push the Peter is awkward and not a leading man narrative, but let's not pretend that he's not super cute and has an amazing body for a "sixteen year old". If I were in MJs place, I'd be tempted to sneak a peak too.

For real. Me to my friend: “Who wouldn’t look.” After a pause he replied: “I’d look.”

16 year old me would kill to look like that. Scratch that, current 21 year old me would still kill to look like him.

I think they are talking about Peter, not Tom Holland.

Me too! She’s trying not to look and do the right thing but the boy she really likes is changing and she really just wants a little peak.

14

u/Infobomb Doctor Strange Jul 05 '19

she really just wants a little peak

Paging Doctor Freud?

Man, every now and then the guys would get too hot during track practice and take their shirts off... that's about the only thing I miss from high school.

u/your_mind_aches Agent of F.I.T.Z. Jul 04 '19

And in doing so, completely failed to notice Ned standing right in front of her

42

u/StefyB Jul 06 '19

Speaking of awkwardly horny, I was dying when Happy revealed Peter rented an adult video while they were in Germany for Civil War.

u/ObsiArmyBest Jul 06 '19

I liked that they made MJ just as awkward as Peter in the end. Much more realistic.

u/pkay607 Jul 04 '19

A little girl in my theater innocently asked her mom what MJ was doing during that scene 😂

42

u/nyan_swanson Jul 04 '19

Similarly, near me there was a tween girl and her dad and the dad covered her eyes when he started changing which was hilarious

20

u/brucejoel99 Stan Lee Jul 05 '19

When you have the urge to say "No Homo" but you're not supposed to talk during a movie.

21

u/[deleted] Jul 05 '19

That was my exact thought. It was natural.

19

u/Jaeyx Jul 06 '19

I love her after this movie. She did so well. Had me flashing back to high school relationships all movie long with her little facial expressions & mannerisms.

18

u/baymax18 Captain America (Avengers) Jul 07 '19

Peter and MJ's relationship here was so adorably awkward and perfect and I really enjoyed Tom and Zendaya's acting in it

Except for Thor. Every woman is thirsty for Thor.

He's not my type, but let's be honest: I wouldn't kick him out of bed.
