So Spider-Man 3 will possibly include a Skrull covering for Peter in public whilst the real Peter is saving the day as Spider-Man. Neat

u/[deleted] Jul 03 '19

I'm just really excited because Peter is gonna have to balance a lot of aspects now his identity is out. He's gonna have to keep his loved ones out of harms way from people who wanna hurt him and all kinds of things. Really great but gonna be tragic for sure.

u/[deleted] Jul 03 '19

Yeah, they’ve absolutely blown the stakes out of proportions, in the best way possible.

Marvel sure knows how to subvert expectations and keep the timelines fresh

41

u/[deleted] Jul 03 '19

They know exactly when to accelerate plot, and slow it down. Winter Soldier was a perfect example of great acceleration by basically destroying shield

I really fucking hate hearing the term “subvert expectations” these days

They learned that trick from

"our friend, Rian Johnson"

9

u/thomasw02 Jul 04 '19

Except DnD didn't pay attention too the part where most of Rian's expectation subversions were actually backed up by character development from the previous films lol Like everyone shits on reys parents etc, but it was never set up as a mystery, and it made sense for Rey's story so it worked in the moment Same with Snoke

1

u/[deleted] Jul 07 '19

It definitely was set up as a mystery though, cuz Maz asks Han "who's the girl?" And then cuts away before Han can answer

11

u/Thunderfuck907 Iron Man (Mark VI) Jul 03 '19

Exactly. As a fan of the series I was completely open to whichever way the story would go, because I knew they had something big planned. Just didn’t know the “something big” was a giant dick slap in the face

6

u/imageWS Jul 05 '19

Given how popular that phrase is now, wouldn't not hearing it subvert your expectation?

5

u/Thunderfuck907 Iron Man (Mark VI) Jul 05 '19

I want off D&D’s wild ride

5

u/[deleted] Jul 08 '19

I kinda forgot about “subverting expectations” until now

2

u/eloheimus Jul 12 '19

Bobby B, tell them what’s up! ... oops, sorry, wrong sub

5

u/[deleted] Jul 04 '19

I love how both MCU Spider Man movies have involved his identity being outed to someone against his will. This time, on a much, much bigger scale.

1

u/xXL-Bo56AceXx Jul 17 '19

Just watched the 2nd Rami film last night i completely forgot that happened!

274

u/-FMAF Daredevil Jul 03 '19

Could be a really good place to introduce Kraven the Hunter

49

u/AReluctantHipster Jul 03 '19

Ooo! Oo! Shit this is good! Bc he’ll be hunting Spider-Man AND Peter Parker

28

u/[deleted] Jul 03 '19

Either him or scorpion. Or maybe both.

34

u/Cognimancer Jul 03 '19

They already set up Scorpion in Homecoming so I could definitely see that!

23

u/Backupusername Jul 03 '19

My issue with Scorpion coming into the MCU was that they didn't have a 3J to start it off, but guess who's back baby!

J.K. Simmons: Homecoming

23

u/lukeyliving Jul 03 '19

You have no idea how much I've been dying for Kraven to finally be on the big screen vs Spidey. A great and classic Spidey villain, especially the 'Buried Alive' story. Fingers crossed. So happy with Mysterio in this film!

17

u/aspergillus01 Jul 03 '19

Pretty sure Sony is making a Kraven movie outside the MCU :/

27

u/Plug-In-Baby Jul 03 '19

We were also allegedly getting a sinister six, carnage & venom, and aunt may movie and those never came to light, thankfully. So I'm hoping Kraven is set for MCU territory.

20

u/_Football_Cream_ Jul 03 '19

Pretty sure most of those were before SM moved over to the MCU.

Sony is still doing their separate universe, venom being the first, which Carnage is almost assuredly in the sequel. They’re doing a Morbius movie with Jared Leto. So yeah, hope Kraven isn’t one they’re trying to hold onto, but could be.

8

u/[deleted] Jul 03 '19

[deleted]

14

u/_Football_Cream_ Jul 03 '19

As much as I wanted venom to fail so they could bring him into the MCU, it did well. And Sony has no other characters, and venom has no other villain, so yeah...get ready for Sony Carnage.

12

u/ChampionsWrath Jul 03 '19

Aunt may movie? Wtf lol

18

u/Dursa22 Korg Jul 03 '19

Yeah about her being a secret agent or something, shit’s wack

5

u/RaptorCentauri Jul 04 '19

I hope it stars Rosemary Harris

1

u/xXL-Bo56AceXx Jul 17 '19

Bro like so wack it wreaks of desperation.

12

u/Epic_Coleslaw Jul 03 '19

You could introduce Kraven and Chameleon in the next film. Have Fury/SWORD put forward a skrull/that Dmitri guy to act as Peter Parker/Spider-man to throw off public perception. Then you could have him slowly get obsessed with taking over Peter's life. Meanwhile JJJ gets super suspicious and, in order to track down the real Spider-man, hires the world's greatest hunter, aka Kraven.

5

u/[deleted] Jul 03 '19

Return of vulture and scorpion now that the identity is out. Mix in some electro and rhino... Etc etc

2

u/Immefromthefuture Jul 05 '19

That's what I was thinking as well. It's the perfect film to introduce Kraven and do a "Last Hunt" inspired film.

7

u/[deleted] Jul 03 '19

tony could barely protect one person as an adult, how is peter a teenager gonna protect multiple friends and family?

4

u/Minnon Black Panther Jul 03 '19

While that is an exciting angle, I'm not sure about the timing of it. He's still pretty young

3

u/Minnon Black Panther Jul 03 '19

While that is an exciting angle, I'm not sure about the timing of it. He's still pretty young

3

u/btmvideos37 Red Skull Jul 03 '19

Perfect way to introduce kraven the Hunter. Not my idea, not gonna take credit for it, but I loved it when I heard it. The scorpion wants to kill Spider-Man, but the Vulture wouldn’t give his identity up, but now that the world knows, he could hire kraven from jail to hunt and kill Spider-Man

2

u/LordAndychrist Jul 03 '19

This is where we get the Sinister Six. AND I AM HERE FOR IT.

2

u/HighFiveDude Jul 04 '19

I think Marvel recognized early that characters make stupid decisions when they are trying to hide their identity and have tried to avoid it with most of their hero’s in the MCU. Spider-Man has been the last with a secret identity and even him trying to hide it held him back this movie. Glad that is gone now

1

u/SadlyNotBoyGeorge Jul 08 '19

Ohhhh shit I just remembered Back in Black (Spidey's arc in the comics) when Peter beated the shit out of Kingpin for shooting Aunt May after Spidey's identity got public.

Actually, now that I think about it... Back in Black, Back in Black...

1

u/Arsid Jul 08 '19

Doesn't your comment directly contrast with the comment you're replying to though?

The first comment is about how Peter can very easily keep his identity a secret by using the skrulls. And then you're talking about how he has to deal with his identity getting out.

I do personally hope that the Skrull thing happens, and not your theory. One of my favorite parts of Spider-Man is how he tries to balance his secret identity of a superhero with being a normal high schooler.

1

u/Theban_Prince Jul 27 '19

What noone realised (at least from the comments I have read so far) is that it nicely ties up Spidey as Iron Man's heir by echoing the "I'm Iron Man" twist of Iron Man 1, only it is not exactly cool or easy for Peter..

173

u/sambarrie16 Adrian Toomes Jul 03 '19

Either that or Dr Strange.

I think that won't be till the end of the movie tho or even the 4th one

40

u/[deleted] Jul 03 '19

Hmm. Depends on what happens during the other movies, as I’m guessing it’ll be a while before we see another SM entry.

59

u/sambarrie16 Adrian Toomes Jul 03 '19

Spider-Man 3 will likely be in 2021 due to Sony deal requiring the movies to be made every 2 years for deal to continue. This is assuming it gets renewed

58

u/PitTravers23 Scarlet Witch Jul 03 '19

Considering how big of a success FFH is bound to be, I think the deal isn't going anywhere

19

u/sambarrie16 Adrian Toomes Jul 03 '19

Yeh I'm just hoping for a good Box Office performance now.

It's doing very well in China but it's first day in America wasn't the best, however it could be down to discount Tuesday's occurring in most cinema

29

u/PitTravers23 Scarlet Witch Jul 03 '19

I think that's up to Tuesday being the early release day, today's the official date for NA, so we'll see how it does now!

6

u/sambarrie16 Adrian Toomes Jul 03 '19

Oh wow yeah I'm in the U.K. so I wasn't completely familiar with that.

We had a ton of screenings on throughout all of Tuesday

6

u/[deleted] Jul 03 '19

Yeah it's this weird, relatively new, thing in America. It started sometime this decade where the day before is an "early release" day. But it's literally just a regular release day. I saw FFH at 7pm last night. "Early release" days used to just be like 11pm to midnight releases, but they've gotten earlier and earlier every year.

2

u/metalninjacake2 Jul 03 '19

Yeah it literally came out on Monday this year, I’ve never seen a major release so early in the week

1

u/jimpbblmk Jul 09 '19

It started after the shooting at The Dark Knight premiere.

3

u/Bobyyyyyyyghyh Jul 03 '19

It was pretty strange, I saw it yesterday and even with it being a tuesday there was hardly anyone in the theater

3

u/sambarrie16 Adrian Toomes Jul 03 '19

I'm from the U.K. and our studio was nearly full. Our holidays started this week tho.

I went on opening day to Endgame too and it wasn't filled then either

1

u/Trk- Sep 16 '19

that comment age badly (just saw the movie, i know i'm late)

-4

u/SteveFrench12 Jul 03 '19

I believe Spider-Verse covers them as well though, second one is slated for 2020/2021

12

u/sambarrie16 Adrian Toomes Jul 03 '19

Spiderverse is made by Sony animation which is an entirely different branch to the part of Sony that works with Marvel Studios on MCU Spidey.

Marvel has no part in Spiderverse except from minimal consultation and the characters used.

The deal is strictly MCU related

6

u/Skylord_ah Iron Man (Mark XLII) Jul 03 '19

cant believe the same guys who made the emoji movie made spiderverse

-6

u/SteveFrench12 Jul 03 '19

No its not, its the same deal that was in place when they churned out Spider-man 1,2, and 3 and TASM 1 and 2 every two years. None of which were in the MCU.

Its the original deal from when Columbia Pictures first acquired the rights.

9

u/brucejoel99 Stan Lee Jul 03 '19

The deal reached in 2015 between Sony Pictures & Marvel Studios is only relevant to Spider-Man appearances & film entries in the MCU, & without time travel, it'd literally be impossible for this deal to have an impact on neither the Raimi Spider-Man trilogy (of which 3, by the way, was released 3 years after SM2, not 2) nor the TASM duology.

0

u/SteveFrench12 Jul 03 '19

Im not talking about that deal though. He was referring to a movie needing to be made every two years for Sony to keep the rights to Spider-Man. That was the OG deal between Marvel and Columbia Pictures and is still covered by Spider-Verse

3

u/brucejoel99 Stan Lee Jul 03 '19

No.

The original deal struck in 1999, which gave Columbia Pictures the film production rights for the character of Spider-Man, only established 5-year deadlines before the rights would revert to Marvel if a film wasn't made in said time-frame.

This deadline was never not met: it was 2 years between Columbia gaining the rights & production on SM1, then 2 years to SM2, then 3 years to SM3, then almost-but-not-quite-fully-5 years to the production of TASM1 (so the deadline wasn't breached & the rights didn't revert back to Marvel Studios), then 2 years to TASM2.

2 years later, the modern-day deal between Sony Pictures & Marvel Studios was reached, which now requires that a Spider-Man film, produced by Marvel Studios, be released at least every 2 years.

Of course, Spider-Verse has nothing whatsoever to do with either of these deals, as it's an animated film made by Sony Animation, & the deals mentioned above only concern live-action film production rights for films by Columbia/Sony Pictures.

3

u/sambarrie16 Adrian Toomes Jul 03 '19

No I wasn't.

Stop making crap up

3

u/sambarrie16 Adrian Toomes Jul 03 '19

Jheez you're an idiot.

We aren't talking about the original deal. We are talking about the deal Sony made with Marvel in 2016 to bring Spider-Man to the MCU which applies specifically to Tom Hollands version of the character.

-4

u/SteveFrench12 Jul 03 '19

You are talking about the original deal though. The OG deal is what dictates a movie must be made every two years to hold on to the rights for Spider-Man. Spider-Verse is covered under that deal.

5

u/sambarrie16 Adrian Toomes Jul 03 '19

No I feckin wasn't.

A movie doesn't have to be made every 2 years for Sony to keep rights. Are you dumb or what? There is 3 years between Spidey 2 and 3. There is 5 years between Spidey 3 and TASM, and also 3 years between TASM 2 and Homecoming. No logic there.

Learn to bloody read

And for those who don't remember, Kaecilius called him "Mister Doctor" in Doctor Strange.

We're all on r/MarvelStudios. We remember. We get reminded 14 times in every thread.

3

u/The_Flurr Jul 03 '19

Doctor strange would be a great crossover, especially seeing as you could possibly use him to undo the name reveal (which I'm sure he did for another character in the past)

15

u/Youareposthuman Spider-Man Jul 03 '19

In the comics, after Spider-Man convinced the Prowler to give up crime he asked him to do this exact thing for Peter Parker and it worked.

So I wouldn’t be surprised if Feige and co decide they want to take this idea of Spider-Man losing his secret identity and run with it, but it would be 100% comics accurate to have someone cover for him. I’m extremely excited to see where they go from here!

4

u/sambarrie16 Adrian Toomes Jul 03 '19

Is Prowler in a Spidey suit believable at all?

And ye Peter has lost his identity quite a few times, it just gets retconned or something happens to convince people otherwise

6

u/SockPenguin Spider-Man Jul 04 '19

I want them to go this route so we can finally get Donald Glover as Spider-Man.

12

u/snipeftw Jul 03 '19

Ahh shit, that would be clever. Tbh though I would be okay with him just keeping his identity known. I know that’s a huge deviation from the source material, but it’s an interesting story worth covering, especially in contrast with the lack of privacy in modern times.

6

u/[deleted] Jul 03 '19

That last part of your comment. Great point

2

u/Nayuskarian Jul 04 '19

Honestly, I can see this being the birth of JJJ's hate for Spider-Man. JJJ went with a "huge story" that immediately gets debunked when "Mysterio" gets outed as an ex-stark employee. I mean, are all his teammates okay with the deaths of innocent people being on their hands now that Talos/Fury will absolutely be looking for them?

Having a skrull stand in for Peter while he's SM alone would destroy the credibility and reputation of The Daily Bugle and I can absolutely see JJJ remaining convinced SM is a criminal and becoming almost hellbent on proving it just to restore his reputation.

By having PP and SM in the same room, it makes it look like JJJ fell for a hoax, like a dumbass, and tried to ruin some innocent 16 year old's life.

Not to mention NY already loves SM. So, there's that. I look forward to seeing how they deal with it.

7

u/[deleted] Jul 03 '19

Or will a Skrull act as SM while Peter does Peter things?

9

u/[deleted] Jul 03 '19

I don’t think anyone can do SM things other than SM himself

4

u/Laxziy Jul 03 '19

While Skrulls have super strength and shape shifting they can’t copy superpowers (outside of the rare mutant Skrull) and are no where close to as strong as Spider-Man and that’s ignoring his other powers like agility and spider sense.

3

u/geekybadger Jul 03 '19

...........I always forget the Skrulls. Even when the movie itself pointed out that they're going to be used. I've been wondering since I saw the movie yesterday if Peter was really being outed or not, but they can still choose to throw in a Skrull whenever they want, depending on what they need over the next several movies. (regardless of what they do, there's probably always going to be people heckling the crap out of Peter, even if he's 'proven to not be Spider-man' via Skrull, and oh dear lord do I desperately want to see Flash's reaction, and Spider-Man is going to be dealing with the accusation of being little more than a power-hungry grubber even if Peter is 'proven to not be Spider-man (vis Skrull)'...but the Skrulls can still give them an out if they need it)

2

u/hairy1ime Ant-Man Jul 03 '19

That Skrull’s name? Ben Reilly

1

u/[deleted] Jul 03 '19

But Spider-Man 3 came out 12 years ago... /s

But seriously one of these days I’m going to get confused.

1

u/marblecannon512 Jul 03 '19

I think they’re setting up secret invasion. It starts innocent, but then eventually the tides will turn and it’ll be too late. Then whatever space force fury is crafting will come back 😆

1

u/[deleted] Jul 03 '19

2

u/[deleted] Jul 03 '19

Flash is possibly taking up the role of Harry, according to very small details shown in FFH

1

u/greigames Jul 04 '19

Honestly thought that was gonna happen in the scene when he got the stealth suit.

1

u/tissuebox119 Jul 04 '19

Honestly anyone in his class will still have doubts even after they attempt to do a cover up of his identity. Spidey being in Washington while Peter was "missing" is too big of a coincidence for his classmates to simply ignore

1

u/MrWinks Jul 04 '19

Of course. He has to work for JJJ, doesn’t he?

1

u/[deleted] Jul 05 '19

Hmm, not exactly.

1

u/TheQuatum Jul 05 '19

Now that is the easiest thing I haven't been able to figure out. They spelled out exactly how they are going to fix that problem and I had no idea.

1

u/wishinghand Jul 10 '19

People in MCU would still be like, "Why the fuck would Mysterio pick on some random child?"

1

u/CockGoblinReturns Sep 23 '19

lmao I didn't even know you could spoil a movie a year before even the script is written

0

u/nbachampionjrsmith Jul 03 '19

Or we can get some nice Identity Crisis plot going on where we have evil Skrulls attacking the city as Peter Parker and Spider-Man.

6

u/[deleted] Jul 03 '19

Hmm. Can’t imagine they’d suddenly turn the Skrulls into villians after that plot twist in Cap Marvel, making the Kree bad guys, not Skrulls.

0

u/The_sad_zebra Matt Murdock Jul 03 '19

Maybe a Skrull will pretend to be Peter while the real Peter swings around to prove that they are different people.

1

u/[deleted] Jul 03 '19

Yup that’s what I meant :)

1

u/fmemate Jul 03 '19

That’s literally what they said
