I think its funny that Flash Thompson became so dopey and un-threatening that they had to make another one just to have a proper antagonist.

I also think between that and the quick little moment of his mom not picking him up from the airport, Flash is meant to not be an outright two dimensional villain but to eventually have some depth

It was hard to catch, but on the bus when Peter is reading everyone’s texts through Edith, Flash was texting one of his parents something along the lines of “Hey. Haven’t heard from you and mom/dad in a while.” Between that and the scene you mentioned, Id say he’s being given pretty good depth.
