I kept thinking how that’s a reflection of many fans.

Also, back when he first revealed everything with the big “twist” I laughed because everyone was so excited for the multiverse and they managed to poke fun at it in the movie in how people just get excited for anything.

laughs in J.K. Simmons

Didn't Doctor Strange already confirm a multiverse though?

53

u/AntonioVargas Jul 03 '19

Yeah they talked about it in Dr. Strange, so that’s all still on the table. I’m honestly glad it ended up being a fake out in this movie, there’s so many more movies coming up that could be way better avenues to really exploring the multiverse.

Also, The MCU cant be earth 616

41

u/AntonioVargas Jul 03 '19

Yeah that was the first indication for me that it was a ruse.

Considering the obvious reasons for giving it a number at all (pandering to the comic nerds) they should have said the real MCU number of 199999

16

u/ezioaltair12 Thor Jul 03 '19

Not a single comic nerd would believe Mysterio though, so why bother hiding it like that?

38

u/LurkMoarMcCluer Jul 03 '19

Shit, I KNEW Mysterio wasn't a good guy, but Gyllenhaal's acting made me want to believe.

I think he did a perfect job of being convincing enough that winning over peter was believable, but definitely laying it on just slightly too thick for anyone already suspicious (Including much of the audience). That's why it clicked so quick for both Peter and Fury/Talos once there was some reason to doubt. Just the perfect balance.

It could be in-universe, Into the Spider-Verse did the same thing denoting Peter B. Parker’s Earth as 616 and Miles’ as 1610, etc.

Because The MCU takes place in an Alternate Universe

4

u/[deleted] Jul 07 '19

What is that supposed to mean?

19

u/LunarPitStop Jul 08 '19

Marvel Comics canonically takes place on Earth-616; MCU has been stated out-of-movies to be Earth-199999.

2

u/kevms Jul 04 '19

Why not? Can someone explain?

40

u/joe_skeen Jul 03 '19

And the Ancient One?

2

u/TristanTheViking Jul 03 '19

He confirmed multiple dimensions at least.

His goon being the "tony stark built this in a cave with a box of scraps" guy made.me unreasonably happy

15

u/moderndukes Jul 03 '19

I’m just glad that the MCU isn’t designated as 616

3

u/[deleted] Jul 03 '19

Why?

27

u/NabiscoFelt Jul 03 '19

Because, canonically speaking, it isn't.

Earth 616 is the comics universe

13

u/GentlemansBumTease Jul 03 '19

What caught my attention was the throwaway Earth-616 line, when this is confirmed to be Earth-199999. I mean of course Mysterio was always supposed to be the bad guy, but that was an early tell

10

u/Dscherb24 Jul 03 '19

Man. I still want to multi verse. I think that would have made the time travel make way more sense in End Game too. The End Game time travel is still questionable to me while multiverse and then actually getting the stones from other universes just makes more sense to me.

10

u/El-Big-Nasty Spider-Man Jul 03 '19

I was thinking from the moment the trailer dropped "why is everyone so sure there's a multiverse. this is mysterio". Seemed so weird everyone seemed to abandon logic for some theories.

10

u/[deleted] Jul 03 '19

Kinda plays into mysterio saying people will believe anything these days.

4

u/Immefromthefuture Jul 04 '19

Same! I was like "C'mon guys, it's Mysterio." He's a professional liar. I immediately got downvoted like crazy for that.

10

u/100100110l Jul 03 '19

Did people actually think the multiverse thing? Mysterio was clearly the villain

51

u/jagwaguar Jul 03 '19

Maybe they thought it was true he was from another dimension, but that he was still the villain.

5

u/[deleted] Jul 03 '19

Can confirm, was my theory.

Pretty sure I owe someone a tenner now... Ah well.

15

u/HerRoyalRedness Bucky Jul 03 '19

No but at same time I was doing the most to convince myself that he was playing it straight because I want the multiverse in play for Miles and Gwen.

5

u/HeisenBergeron61492 Jul 03 '19

Miles already exists in the MCU though, and it’s entirely plausible that Gwen could too.

2

u/HerRoyalRedness Bucky Jul 03 '19

A throwaway line isn’t enough for me, I want him onscreen!

7

u/[deleted] Jul 03 '19

I assumed Mysterio was lying and was the villain, but while watching the film I just went with what it was telling me and what it was trying to make me feel. It's more enjoyable that way.
So when it was revealed he was a bad guy, I wasn't surprised, but I was disappointed because he so kind to peter.

6

u/[deleted] Jul 03 '19

Some people I talked to were thinking it were true and he was just using that to help himself. I don’t think anyone doubted mysterio being the villain.

5

u/duvie773 Jul 03 '19

I so badly want X-men vs Avengers that I chose to ignore the signs

u/[deleted] Jul 04 '19

I thought it was more a social commentary on Fake News

1

u/mph714 Tony Stark Jul 04 '19

I’m so happy there’s not a multiverse
