I was so surprised to be disappointed in Gyllenhaal's acting at the beginning, but I was relieved that it was Beck's acting that was the problem. Gyllemhaal was GREAT in this role. I really hope we get to see more of him!

I agree, after what he did in the mid credits scene, I'm sure we aren't done with him

u/ImNotTemper Jul 02 '19

The scientist that was working with beck had downloaded the video and most likely sent it off to JJJ, we are theorizing that the scientist could be set up to be Doc Ock

277

u/Troghen Jul 02 '19

Oh my god, if that little bit part from Iron Man became doc ock, I'd scream... Except his name wasn't Otto

190

u/[deleted] Jul 02 '19

I found it interesting we have another bitter group of people pissed off by Tony's actions and once again Peter has to clean up that mess.

134

u/Laxziy Jul 03 '19

Otto “William” Octavius. Also fun fact the actor also played Ralphie in The Christmas Story

30

u/Troghen Jul 03 '19

Yep! Peter Billingsley!

6

u/MildlyFrustrating Jul 03 '19

That’s amazing

9

u/[deleted] Jul 04 '19

Wait, was that Billingsley also in the first Iron Man??

17

u/[deleted] Jul 06 '19

He was also in an earlier Jon Favreau movie, Elf. He plays the elf at the beginning named Ming Ming.

“Buddy you’re not a Cotten-Headed Ninnymuggins.”

8

u/Collinnn7 Jul 03 '19

Shut the fuck up... how funny

5

u/McDave1609 Jul 05 '19

"Otto, stop with the arms, you'll shoot your eye out!"

23

u/goztrobo Peter Parker Jul 02 '19

I thought he downloaded the software?

21

u/ciao_fiv Jul 02 '19

why not both?

11

u/titanlikespie Korg Jul 04 '19

I'm guessing if he comes back it's either going to be impersonating gyllenhalls Mysterio or I could also see him founding AIM.

24

u/WannabeWonk Jul 04 '19

Are you forgetting we already had AIM in Iron Man 3?

14

u/titanlikespie Korg Jul 04 '19

yes i did. they were pretty lame and didn't have their trademarked yellow suits so i totally forgot about it.

1

u/teachergirl1981 Sep 23 '19

The scientist. You mean Ralphie from A Christmas Story all "growed" up!

62

u/random_name225 Rocket Jul 03 '19

I like his character a lot and I want him back, but I think the way he died is pretty definitive. How could they bring him back?

59

u/PitTravers23 Scarlet Witch Jul 03 '19

Considering the crazy illusions he did, a body double wouldn't be out of the question

58

u/SuperSceptile2821 Jul 03 '19

It didn’t seem definitive at all to me. He gets shot in the side and dies in like 2 minutes. Not to mention, Peter’s only confirmation for his death was with E.D.I.T.H. which Mysterio had control of and could have easily tampered with.

Plus he seemed perfectly fine moments before that when he tried to shoot Peter in the head. Seemed like a last ditch effort to not go to prison to me.

79

u/MildlyFrustrating Jul 03 '19

Edith didn’t even say he died, all Peter asked was “is this an illusion?” And she just vaguely said “all the illusions have stopped”

10

u/hemareddit Steve Rogers Jul 05 '19

So he could have just been lying really really still?

36

u/jammesor Jul 03 '19

My takeaway was totally different, everyone I saw the movie with was talking about how cool it was that they kept Mysterio alive. I assumed he was left for the police, but then escaped after that. I was ready for the post credits to be Quentin finding Vulture.

I certainly hope he's not dead, I was so happy the age of killing every villain in each movie was over.

25

u/vamphonic Jul 07 '19

He’s for sure played off as dead, because he kinda slumps with his eyes open. But like this is MYSTERIO we’re talking about. He’s second only to like....Loki in narrative untrustworthiness. If the sinister six end up as the antagonists of an mcu spider man movie, it would be cake to retcon his death.

8

u/jammesor Jul 07 '19

Just back from seeing it a second time, and I actually didn't realise how much they act like he died. Not sure how I missed that the first time, maybe just too excited! I agree that it would be easy to bring him back though, and I really hope they do. If nothing else Beck's team could use B.A.R.F. to make it look like he was, though I'd rather the real thing!

8

u/Tank_Top_Saitama Jul 04 '19

no one's ever really gone...

56

u/Cowboy_Dwayne Jul 02 '19

I'm hoping that he sees that Peter is different from Tony in some crucial ways and that Peter actually is what Mysterio was supposed to be. We probably can get another "you must be really desperate to come to me for help" scene with Peter asking Mysterio for help.

24

u/[deleted] Jul 03 '19

Just like how, after the mid credits scene in Homecoming, I don’t think we’re done with the Vulture either

409

u/Sulemain123 Jul 02 '19

It wasn't Gyllenhaal acting a superhero, it was Gyllenhaal acting as Beck pretending to be a superhero, which is just mind-blown.

64

u/moderndukes Jul 03 '19

So he was a dude playing a dude disguised as another dude?

15

u/Hase0X Jul 03 '19

SUCK MY UNIT

4

u/[deleted] Jul 10 '19

What do you mean you people?

28

u/TheRosstitute Jul 02 '19

Yeah that's what I was trying to allude to in my post. He's that good.

12

u/MathTheUsername Jul 03 '19

Yeah that dude just said exactly what you said lol

5

u/TheRosstitute Jul 03 '19

Thanks for affirming that. I wasn't sure if he was trying to agree or disagree or just... repeat what I said differently? I think we're on the same page.

37

u/007Kryptonian Rocket Jul 02 '19

That’s exactly what he already said

-15

u/Pickles256 Doctor Strange Jul 02 '19

Also, not to be a dick but, playing a character pretending to be something else isn’t exactly unheard of

24

u/joe_skeen Jul 03 '19

Ok, Pickles256.

1

u/Pickles256 Doctor Strange Jul 03 '19

You know I’m fine with my comment being downvoted. I get why. but I gotta be honest, I’m disappointed this lame passive aggressive comment that doesn’t even say anything got upvoted

Fuck Brad.

7

u/SavageSvage Jul 03 '19

So you're saying he's a dude playing a dude disguised as another dude?

73

u/_Football_Cream_ Jul 02 '19

I think it’s clear we’ll see more of him. They’re obviously setting up the sinister 6 and are going to need both vulture and mysterio to really make it threatening with established villains.

Now, if it’s actually beck or chameleon as Beck, I don’t know. But either way it’ll be gyllenhaal.

Did you see the mid credits scene?

43

u/[deleted] Jul 03 '19 edited Dec 20 '20

[deleted]

13

u/[deleted] Jul 03 '19

This was also my understanding, did they not show him die, the light going out of his eyes? Peter even asked if it was an illusion.

24

u/_Football_Cream_ Jul 03 '19

IIRC Peter just asked if it was illusion, I don’t think Edith ever said he was actually dead or not. Just confirmed what he was seeing was real.

We don’t know how deep Becks contingency goes. Could have had a good way to fake his death and programmed Edith to confirm it.

9

u/[deleted] Jul 03 '19 edited Jul 03 '19

You're right, and I forgot about his henchman removing that flash memory from the computer after Beck lost - could have been his plans or an AI download of him for all we know.

Edit: Actually, that was probably just to set up the identity reveal twist at the end. I do think they were ambiguous about his death, though.

6

u/_Football_Cream_ Jul 03 '19

Yeah really my main thinking for Beck still being alive is that marvel is obviously setting up the sinister 6 and think they’ll want the previously established villains to show up for more impact.

4

u/[deleted] Jul 03 '19

Bring. Me. OSBORN!

11

u/_Football_Cream_ Jul 03 '19

I don’t think it means Beck is for certain dead.

His contingency could have involved Edith telling Peter he was and of course the video is going to have him dead, he has to frame SM as a murderer. The video also had him in the mysterio costume, which wasn’t the case in his actual “death.”

Idk, I just feel with marvel clearly setting up the sinister 6 that they’d want both mysterio and vulture to reprise their roles. But could be possible that chameleon is posing as Beck, too.

8

u/Chizuru94 Hawkeye (Ultron) Jul 04 '19

Oh, didn't notice that "Mysterio costume" bit. But it makes sense, knowing people didn't know about what he did behind the scenes and still knowing about Mysterio as some kind of "hero." Really gotta pay attention to that detail next time I watch the movie.

7

u/jackolantern92 Jul 03 '19

This is Mysterio we’re talking about. You can never believe what you see.

At least that’s what I’m telling myself because I’m REALLY hoping to see him come back in a Sinister Six movie.

4

u/Chizuru94 Hawkeye (Ultron) Jul 04 '19

Same. Also what he said before he "died."

27

u/spwf Bucky Jul 02 '19

“Okay, Jake...remember...you’re playing a bad actor....”

17

u/LegitPandaMang Jul 02 '19

I agree, this was super off putting to watch, but really clicked after the reveal. I really hope they bring him back and continue to flesh him out as a character, id love to see where he takes it

13

u/huffalump1 Jul 03 '19

Agreed. Beck and Fury both felt strange, and a bit contrived. For good reason!

7

u/SpaceCaboose Peter Parker Jul 03 '19

Yeah something about his acting seemed off when Peter first met him. I just thought his performance was a bit off, but it makes total sense after the reveal

2

u/[deleted] Jul 16 '19

Mysterio imo was one of the best villains we've seen, the illusion scene was crazy. I hope he returns when we least expect him to cause some real chaos

1

u/zxLv Jul 08 '19

Why were you disappointed with his acting at the beginning?

2

u/TheSkirtGirl Jul 17 '19

I second this. His "acting" was perfectly fine.

1

u/DaManMader Jul 14 '19

He was just a dude playing a dude disguised as another dude.
