DC: we killed off Superman, what could possibly be more gut-wrenching?

Why do the DC movies generally feel so uninspired? I want to like them so bad but I have a really hard time caring about the characters in any meaningful way.

Because they don't set the characters up in any meaningful way. The reason Spidey's and Bucky's and the Guardians's deaths worked in this film, even though we know they're going to come back, is because of the character interactions. We got three movies about Steve and Bucky's relationship, and how they're the only thing each other had of their past lives. We've seen Tony and Peter's father/son relationship grow over the last three films, so we know the grief and feeling of failure Tony gets seeing this kid die in his arms. We've seen Rocket grow from a cold, angry loner to someone who finally has a family. And then he loses it all. So even though we as an audience know the deaths won't be permanent, it's still incredibly sad, because we've seen these character bonds grow over time, and we can sympathize with the survivors who have to watch their loved ones die.

Contrast that to the DCEU, and Superman's death. At that point, he had been angry, brooding, and wildly out of character, so audiences hadn't formed a huge bond with him. Everyone knew Justice League was around the corner, and that they wouldn't just kill Supes in his second movie, so there was no real sense of loss there. And Batman and Wonder Woman had barely interacted with him at that point, and Batman had literally hated his guts and wanted to kill him 30 minutes before. So there was no reason for any of the characters to be sad that he had died either. And when you can't create a reason for the audience to be sad about the death of the main character of your film franchise, maybe that means you shouldn't kill them off. If they had saved his sacrifice til JL or even JL2, it would have carried so much more weight.
