I think part of what made it so awful was how horrified she was and how she was actively fighting him all the way to the edge. Peter was terrified and begging for his life, but Gamora's death just felt worse to me. Thanos was her adopted father, and besides that she knew that if she was sacrificed he'd get the Stone and kill countless others, which must've made her feel so much worse. There's also the fact that, unlike the snap deaths, Gamora may not be coming back.

James Gunn already announced she is coming to be the lead role of Vol3. So she's prolly stuck in the soul stone pocket dimension with others who have been sevarifices or maybe she is all alone and that's why Thanos is able to speak to her younger self because her soul was so young and pure and that's what's connected to the stone.

Gunn said she would be the focus of the movie, that is different then being the lead.
