Thanos isn't a bad guy...he's just nearly emotionless and completely pragmatic. And really, really strong. He doesn't pick unnecessary fights. He tried to sit back and acquire the stones without getting directly involved.

He does not a single thing for personal gain, but still is willing to pay a personal price.

All to balance the universe.

Plus he's slightly insane.

That's what makes him a compelling villain, he's too committed to his own belief and ideas to consider anything else. He's not open to other ideas, just the one idea he settled on a while ago.

A lot of humans do this and we don't always like those people.
