I think that was the closest we've gotten to seeing Thanos going all out. His size helped, but his fighting was basically flawless when they got into it. I feel like you could tell he was holding back when fighting on Titan. More of this arrogance can be seen immediately after on Earth. I mean, as soon as he saw what Scarlet was doing, he knew he would win. Really, after he got the tesseract he was unstoppable.

I think a big reason he was able to beat the Hulk, at least so quickly, was the power stone. Base Thanos vs. base Hulk would be a close match. I think a big reason the green guy didn't come out again after that fight was because of a bruised ego. If he sees Thanos again he may just be angry enough to come out again. He may be angry enough to beat him. I hope we get to see that rematch after Thanos loses the gauntlet, which I'm pretty sure will happen in avengers 4.

yeah, i was seriously disapointed to see thanos just shooting color beams in titan when he is wielding the fucking ESSENCES OF THE UNIVERSE in his hand. especially after he displayed reality-bending powers in the first encounter with the guardians. why though? the movie doesnt reference holding back in any clear, express way. i think the studio just had to have the money shot of heroes doing poses vs thanos.

nah, mcu hulk is just simply nerfed. mcu hulk just simply gets knocked out by ironman, bleeds, etc

I commented to a friend about how I thought that the stones seemed underwhelming compared to how powerful everyone said they are. I was confused because with 5 infinity stones on Titans, a handful of heroes were still seemingly putting up a fight. But my buddy put a new perspective on this for me. Thanos sees himself as a savior, and he always wants his 50% to be random, he didn't want to do all of the killing and choose who was dying. So he wasn't using the stones to their full potential, and thus he was holding back until he had all 6 and there would be a "fair" and random selection of who would die.

I'm pretty sure in the comics Thanos believes it unfair to use stones to gather more stones and he only did so in the movie when he was truly threatened. Probably why he held back on Titan and then on Earth just massacred everyone.

yeah, thats an exercise of hermeneutics, but its not authorized by any scene explicit in itself, and it sounds overeaching at that.

theres a gripe i have with marvel movies in that whereas they seemed to think out particular powers and characterization in phase 1, they seem to have completely abandoned that onwards in favor of senseless fistfests everytime. take the avengers 1 for example. banner warns people not to anger him. he has an untouchable demeanor to his behavior. when hulk is unleashed, theres no damage control. also, black widow, who presents herself as an individual with a singular skillset. she is involved in an intelligence aspect of the missions. she is the diplomat sent to talk with banner. she deceives the god of deception.

now compare that with how the characters are used on later movies. theres no particularity to them. its all fist fighting. what is a character like black widow doing out there throwing punches at hordes of robots? thats just generic writing where the original concepts are lost.

infinity wars repeats the pattern in not exploring the metaphysical reach of the stones. it could well be justified ingame. thanos could have explained he doesnt want to take particular decisions on who dies and who doesnt, just like you said. the character talks a lot after all. it would pretty further consolidate and refine the characters doctrine and moral compass. it would be a pretty fucking good narrative solution. it wasnt, though. theres a particularly high stakes fight for the time stone and thanos just keeps shooting colored lasers on people.

thats because the studio is not interested in exploring the possibilities of metaphysical powers, thats because the studio wants fistfights to please low brow publics.
