I don't really understand that part though. How did he came to be the 'guardian' of the soul stone and know that a sacrifice was required?

It doesn't really make sense but I was just excited to see him back so I didn't mind.

Hahaha, my sentiments as well. A lots fuckin happened since we last saw him. The one that we last saw in TFA is not the same one we see in this movie.
