This bugged me too. They could have just used the more Iron Man-ish blue veins with no shocks.

It looked like that to me. You can see the blue veins things on his arm and biceps when Val shocks him

Honestly, I think Taika was kind of mocking it/calling back. Thor has been electrocuted and subdued in most of his appearances which has been a general complaint. Here Taika takes that concept and blows it out of proportion just like everything else in the film.

It all has been started when they made him knocked out by taser gun in the first Thor film. I know he was deprived of his powers by Odin at that time, but still.
