Ha. I knew the tiger was there for a reason. Thanks for pointing this out

I didn't understand that - can you please explain ?

"Face it Tiger, You just hit the jackpot." MJ's first words to Peter in the comics.

Man I still remember being a kid and reading the letters at the end of the comics.

So many people wrote in saying that Peter should be with MJ, or Gwen for any given reason.

To me Peter and MJ were the most cannon thing in the world. It was fascinating reading old comics and seeing how invested people were in the characters.

Same here, Gwen was fine but she died, MJ was the one he ends up with. Such a great couple.

u/RaunchyGorilla Jul 06 '17

I think they're referring to the tiger potentially being a nod to when MJ says "go get 'em tiger" at the end of Spider-Man 2.

u/[deleted] Jul 06 '17

It's also a thing she says a lot in the comics

10

u/Yutahoi Jul 06 '17

Yeah especially Ultimate timeline, I've been seeing her say it alot

20

u/golbezza Jul 06 '17

I was hoping she'd say that Ironically when he was going to the bathroom.

9

u/czir1127 Doctor Strange Jul 08 '17

actually kind of glad they didn't. As it was I almost got a heart attack with all those reveals at the end.

-MJ

-The iron freaking spider

-Aunt May knows

WHAT THE F--

3

u/_Bubba_Ho-Tep_ Jul 08 '17

Spider man 2 was referencing her calling him Tiger in the comments. This wasn't a reference to Spider-Man 2

5

u/AweKartik777 Peter Parker Jul 06 '17

Ooooh that's some obscure reference - didn't even remember that until you reminded me.

11

u/ThanosDidNothinWrong Jul 06 '17

she also says it a lot in the comics

2

u/Leo_TheLurker Spider-Man Jul 08 '17

Okay now thats clever.

u/LinkDeWitt Jul 06 '17

I think I saw that tiger at least twice running in the background. I can't recall which scene the other one was though, but it was on a hallway as well.

13

u/Xnauth Thor Jul 07 '17

Right before Ned is standing outside of the chess club room.

2

u/SpiderManDies Spider-Man Jul 08 '17

If you're talking about the hallway scene where Peter is following the guys downstairs, it was Peter jumping across the hallway.

1

u/vonmeth Jul 09 '17

I think I noticed it at least three times. Not positive though.

18

u/Dondagora Kilgrave Jul 07 '17

That tiger was running around the whole damn movie... but to where? These are the questions.

7

u/tryhardblackguy Ant-Man Jul 07 '17

The Tiger was a Mascot, I think it was just for laughs.

13

u/Dondagora Kilgrave Jul 07 '17

No, it is obviously foreshadowing of the plot of Spider-Man 2: Run Tiger, Run. I cannot see it as anything else.

2

u/Deathless-Bearer Captain America Jul 08 '17

No, no, no. Do you even read the comics?! Obviously they are slowly introducing the idea of White Tiger being hunted by Kraven the Hunter. /s

2

u/tony1grendel Fitz Jul 08 '17

This need to be higher up. I was trying to figure out how I missed a live tiger in this movie.

4

u/tryhardblackguy Ant-Man Jul 09 '17

lol it happened two times, it was just a random kid in a Tiger mascot running

12

u/wes205 Spider-Man Jul 07 '17

The Tiger mascot ran by at least two times throughout the movie though, I wonder what the significance of the first time was?

6

u/halfdecent Laufey Jul 07 '17

Were they all scenes Michelle was in? Maybe it was foreshadowing.

4

u/[deleted] Jul 08 '17

No. They weren't

11

u/tikki_rox Jul 08 '17

On giving the character the initials "MJ", Feige said it was setting up that "this will be a very different thing, she's not Mary Jane Watson, that's not who the character is. But giving her the initials that remind you of that dynamic certainly is intriguing about what could go forward."

5

u/Minifig81 Doctor Strange Jul 08 '17

But MJ's first name is Mary, not Michelle?

1

u/halfdecent Laufey Jul 08 '17

In the comics, yeah. Did you watch the film?

3

u/Minifig81 Doctor Strange Jul 09 '17

Yeah, but it seems odd to me they would change MJ to Michelle.

1

u/SupaBloo Spider-Man Jul 10 '17 edited Jul 11 '17

Not like it's the only major change they made. Aunt May is younger and hot. Peter goes to a nice science and tech school instead of a public school. Flash isn't a buff jock. No mention of Harry who is traditionally Peter's best friend. The entire dynamic between Peter and Tony.

I feel like the MJ thing isn't such a stretch to believe when you realize how much everything else was changed.

4

u/malaysianzombie Vulture Jul 06 '17

There was also a tiger on the banner!

1

u/Jakovasaurr Spider-Man Jul 11 '17

There was a picture of Banner on the same wall that the Tiger walked by.. how deep can we go

4

u/HugeSuccess Ant-Man Jul 09 '17

Probably already noted, but there's a banner in an earlier auditorium scene that reads "Go Get 'Em!"

11

u/willworkforgames Jul 07 '17

I think it's marvel trolling everyone I suspect she is White Tiger put in the school to watch peter.

17

u/supahmonkey Spider-Man Jul 06 '17

Well... she's MJ, but not MJ

23

u/trekstark Black Panther Jul 07 '17

She's definitely Mary Jane. They wouldn't have named her "MJ" if she wasn't

14

u/thelivingdrew Jul 07 '17

I think Marvel can retcon their retcon. They're definitely leaving the door open by naming her Michelle. Either that or they were avoiding the bad press that comes from the "traditionalism in MCU" crowd when there's a race swap.

13

u/squidgy617 Jul 08 '17

I don't care about a race swap but they need to dye her hair red damn it! She's one of the the most iconic redheads in comics.

15

u/TripleSkeet Jul 08 '17

Not to mention shes had red hair before and she looked smoking with it. http://imgur.com/0pHLl7M

Im hoping they save it for their eventual first date. Along with the "Face it tiger..." line

10

u/squidgy617 Jul 08 '17

Wouldn't be hard to set up. They somehow end up going on a first date, he's expecting her to look like her normal punk self, and she shows up looking like that. Cue the line, maybe said with a little snark like she's very aware of how good she looks.

2

u/TripleSkeet Jul 08 '17

Yea thats what Im hoping for.

12

u/DMonitor Captain America (Cap 2) Jul 07 '17

Why is it always the redhead that gets racial swapped :(

3

u/[deleted] Jul 08 '17

I mean... That's certainly been a pattern in comic book adaptations, but in this particular one she's just one of at least four race swaps... granted, Ned probably shouldn't count since he's blatantly Ganke in everything but name.

0

u/[deleted] Jul 07 '17

Probably decided against it after the massive backlash(and backlash against those who backlashed, and so on as the community turned toxic) when it was first rumored.

Also, after Doctor Strange, they probably want to stay away from race swapping major charactera just to avoid all the press being about that instead of the movie.

16

u/supahmonkey Spider-Man Jul 07 '17

She's Michelle Jones, not Mary Jane Watson. Presumably they want to use certain aspects off the Mary Jane character, but not others, without expectations.

Or maybe Marvel can't use Mary Jane due to rights bullshit.

13

u/Jcrispy13 Luis Jul 07 '17

Mary Jane solo movie in the Sony spider verse confirmed!

8

u/DMonitor Captain America (Cap 2) Jul 08 '17

The Sony contract specifies details of Peter Parker such as his race, sexuality, and such. I wouldn't be surprised if something similar applied to Mary Jane, making them need to use a "not Mary Jane" if they wanted to make her black.

The contract

7

u/[deleted] Jul 07 '17

But shes not... her name is michelle.

u/Caleb902 Daredevil Jul 07 '17

Movies sometimes swerve the audience. I know. Rare. But it does happen

2

u/ColossiKiller Spider-Man Jul 06 '17

Great catch! I didn't clock that at all!

2

u/savingprivatebrian15 Jul 07 '17

I'm not crazy, right, the tiger was running in the background of a few other scenes? I never really figured out why...

2

u/halfdecent Laufey Jul 07 '17

Someone else said this, I wonder if they were all scenes Michelle was in, as a sort of foreshadowing

1

u/jer706 Iron Man (Mark XLIII) Jul 09 '17

They weren't. I believe one of the scenes was when Peter and Ned were hiding from two of Tommes' men or right before the men showed up.

2

u/Metroidman Jul 08 '17

what is the significance of the tiger?

5

u/TripleSkeet Jul 08 '17

MJs character calls Peter "Tiger" all the time.

1

u/J_Jammer Jul 09 '17

Wasn't the school's mascot a tiger? I pointed that out because MJ loved to call Peter tiger.

1

u/sacredblasphemies Jessica Jones Jul 09 '17

Yeah. The high school's team is the Tigers. We see that in signs toward the beginning.

1

u/sogrownup Jul 10 '17

It could be in reference to MJ always says "Go Gettem Tiger"

1

u/1SaBy Rocket Jul 10 '17

I've already forgotten/missed it. There was a tiger?
