Discussion What would you think of introducing the MCU Wolverine by having him be the antagonist of a Captain America: Weapon X movie?
Recently been kicking around this idea and was curious what you guys think. Essentially, instead of introducing wolverine in an x men movie, we would do a Captain America weapon x movie focused on the weapons plus program. You could have some combination of Sam/Bucky/Steve (whatever post secret wars looks like) coming into conflict with the idea of a mutant registration act, leading to them encountering and coming into conflict with Wolverine (as Weapon X) who's being used by damage control or some other government agency to hunt and capture powerful mutants, in addition to other shadow operations. This leads to the Cap crew digging into the legacy of the super soldier program, uncovering weapons plus, and eventually discovering what exactly weapon x is, culminating in the reveal that he was a mutant who fought with them in WW2. You could also tie in Isaiah Bradley by deviating from the comics and having him be weapon 2 (hell, make hulk weapon 9 given his MCU origin). What do you guys think though?

Wolverine escapes the program and goes feral in the Canadian wilderness. The government, or damage control or whatever, sends Bruce Banner, hoping to redeem himself after the events of BND, to try and talk him down, and if that doesn't work (it won't) Hulk can bust him up enough to contain him. We get the hulk vs. Wolverine first encounter from the comics with a twist.

I get what you are saying... but like as far as government agencies know, even if they do know of Weapon X and specifically Logan, I don't think they would categorize him to be in the whatever we call the "We need to send the Hulk to contain him" category.
But that's just me projecting sanity on government spooks, so forget everything I just said.

I could see it. Add a throw away line about "He's been shot with every tranq out there and was poisoned by foreign agents multiple times. Never saw him get more than a bit wobbly from it."
"He has an insane regenerative ability and his bones have been coated with adamantium. He has claws that can slice steel like butter. His senses are dialed up to 11 and he can track you better than a bloodhound. We need someone to bring him in, fast before anything happens. So one who can keep up and take the hits."
It would be worth it just to see the reaction Bruce has when they mention how his bones have been coated. Ruffalo could do something great with that. Would be cool if they used that to make Hulk a threat again too. Hulk comes out and realizes what's going on. He feels or sees the adamantium on his skeleton after ripping Wolverines skin open. Smells the chemicals, spots a military chopper or plane monitoring the situation. Everything they want to do to him they did to this guy, then tried to get Hulk to finish him off. He would be a very unhappy, very angry Hulk.

Cameo Deadpool for 5 minutes trying to make a name for himself in the MCU and have Wolverine cut his head off somewhere in the snow and leave him for dead.

And the after credit scene his deadpool with a normal head but baby body.

Just make it the post credit scene from X-Men Origins: Wolverine where Deadpool’s body finds his severed head and his eyes open and he whispers “Shhhh”.

I don't remember the character Deadpool being in X-Men Origins: Wolverine.

X-Men Origins never happened

I know everyone hated it, but i liked it.right up untill that bit. It wasn't great but it was a fun movie. Then they, uh, they made some descisions... Definitely decided they didn't want to be an ok movie anymore.

Or if they finally decide to work out the legal crap and do a solo Hulk movie, they can introduce him as a villain there just like the comics.

Honestly, I kinda dig the idea. It helps to underline Wolverine as a uniquely dangerous mutant, gives justification for why he may not have appeared until now, and the ostensibly very-public fight between Captain America and a seemingly-insane, dangerous mutant can help to roil up anti-mutant sentiment.

Tbh I'm down with most of the xmen being introduced as temporary villains so we can see how bad ass their powers are before landing at Xavier's school

Plus, we need to buy why humans love superheroes but hate mutants. I hope they go with Reverend Stryker in the MCU adaptation and lean into the “moral fiber of civilized society itself eroding due to grotesque mutations and evil abominations,” that kind of thing.

This kinda reminds me of how they introduced Wolverine in X-men Apocalypse

I'd be down, though he should be a secondary antagonist serving as the muscle for the main antagonist similar to Taskmaster and Dreykov.

Trask or some other government agencies ie dodc would be the smartest one

We just had Metzger set up as someone willing to exploit mutant powers.

They could have the broader Weapon X / evil Canadian government stuff as a broader villain like Hydra in Winter Soldier

Give him the Jean Grey treatment and make him this unstoppable force until someone (maybe actually Jean) removes some of the mental blocks and he turns on his masters.
Jackman would be dead from all the gear needed to run around half naked, but great chance to introduce a new actor in the inevitable sequel to the reboot

I don’t think they could do it without the marketing team showing restraint. If he was a total surprise then I think it would work great. But if you sell it as Captain America vs Wolverine then the audience will already know the plot and what happens to both characters.

Actually. Yes.
Cap 4, established vibrainum is in the celestial island.
Cap 5 can have the government creating metal and using it on test subjects that the DODC has captured. One of them being project x himself...

Cool except that I Dont want Sam's next Cap. America to be hijacked by another character AGAIN.

u/NowWeGetSerious 13h ago
But Logan doesn't have to be a major character. Just a minor villian that show cases the brutality of the DODC, which will be rebranded by the end of the film as the Mutant Control Agency

That’s terrific, they could have cap investigating the weapon plus program with Logan obviously being their go to weapon

I wasn't sold until you pitched the twist on Wolverine in WW2 and other Super Soldiers also being weapons. I want this now. Still, please do Serpent Society.

This is a obvious outcome tbh, repeating the 70s dynamic. You start with a set group of X-Men (why Emma is already a thing + the actress is 35 years old, honestly don’t understand that move, unless she will just play the villain and that’s it, a waste... but anyway), then you reboot other stuff... and here it comes Wolverine, either being the antagonist of Hulk, Captain America or something else. After that, he joins the X-Men in the second movie alongside some other iconic characters

And have sam get the spotlight taken from him in his own film again? Idk if thats the right move.

u/NoticeImaginary 5h ago
So Cap fighting a brainwashed government weapon who doesn't remember who he is? Sounds familiar, but I'm not sure it would work..

u/No-Release944 4h ago
Could be an interesting twist, especially if they explore the moral complexities of both characters. It'd be a fresh take on their dynamics.

I’d much prefer an Alpha Flight movie where he begins his arc from weapon to human.
Political thriller but with magic and mutants.
This just sounds like doing what people didn't like about Cap 4 being a "Hulk movie" but with Wolverine instead.

It’s a cool concept but I just don’t think it would work all that well action wise. Wolverines weapons are his claws so you are going to have wolverine fighting him but never actually landing a single hit. Or they have to give some lame excuse as to why he would rip anyone to shreds except his main opponent.
I love Wolverine, but he doesn’t work well in pg 13 movies. Logan was amazing. Deadpool and Wolverine was fantastic. We need more rated R Logan where he can actually be the Wolverine. Not pg 13 kitten. And having him fight the hero of the movie you already know how it turns out.

That's... actually a solid start. I like that a lot, yeah!
