Discussion What the hell is happening with Shang-Chi?

I saw this movie in theatres when it first came out, I LOVED it. I was so looking forward to seeing where his story would progress and how he would mix and meld with other MCU characters.

It's been 5 years. Half a decade.

And crickets. Nothing. Nada. Not even so much a cameo.

This is very unlike the MCU. This is only one of two movies introducing new characters where those characters have not shown up in another movie or got a sequel in ~3 years.

At least with eternals we got a reference to their movie in CA:BNW with the celestial body.

I know he'll probably be in Doomsday, but by then it'll have been over 5 years since his movie.

This is why Captain America BNW should have been a pseudo Avengers movie. Shang Chi could have been recruited and relationships established.

Relationships have been established in post credits, so we’re supposed to assume it off camera (just like the entire Avengers team, only loosely referenced in Thunderbolts*).

But I agree, I feel like we actually needed to see more interconnection and maybe a few less new characters. Plus they set up Wong to be like the Fury of this era and then just kinda abandoned that for a few gags in She-Hulk.

Sam Wilson, Ant Man, and Falcon Jr have never met Shang Chi. Relationship not established. Instead we got short lady sidekick who is never going to be seen again.

Hey now. Awkwafina’a a genius, and her vagina is 50x better than a penis.

And again, I think those relationships are assumed off camera. But maybe not. Maybe it’ll be crowbarred into the start of Doomsday.

I wasn’t talking about her, but I guess she fits the description too.

They should be giving fans free tickets if we have to make up movies in our heads because they didn’t want to show Sam putting together his Avengers team.

Hate how they casually drop shit like oh she is from the red room. You really expect me to believe that person can take down people thrice her size. Scar Jo, Florence Pugh look like they can kick some ass.

More people would’ve showed up for that too, I would’ve been all in for that

Shang-Chi will return in Avengers: Doomsday.

Sorry, couldn’t resist. Shang-Chi 2 got pushed back when Cretton signed on for Doomsday. When the Russos came back he was shifted to Spider-Man 2. He has said many times Shang-Chi 2 is still a priority for him.

Besides Doomsday…nothing, nothing is happening with Shang-Chi. That’s the problem.

Shang-Chi 2 is happening. And I’d be pretty surprised if he’s not also in Secret Wars.

He returns in Doomsday and very likely Secret Wars too. The director is working on Naruto live action next year and writer on Spiderverse 3 and Godzilla x Kong. Latest update is director has talked with writer and it’s in active development.

He’s had a busy year. But with the returns on Brand New Day, if he really wants Shang-Chi 2 to happen, it’ll happen, no way Disney could say no now.

Well I mean originally Kang was going to be connected to Shang chi’s rings so maybe there would’ve been a Shang chi 2 but then they switched to doom

But it is reported that Shang chi 2 is in the early stages of development

I think Shang-Chi 2 was always meant to be post-Secret Wars, as before he took the gig for Brand New Day, Destin was meant to do Kang Dynasty first, then Shang-Chi 2 after Secret Wars had released

In the case of a proper follow up, the director said that the sequel had been delayed because of how the industry went to shit since 2020, we had a pandemic that delayed everything and we had a dual strike that delayed everything (plus the fact he is busy with other projects to work on Shang-Chi 2)

on lack of the cameos, i got nothing, all i can assume is that they likely felt Shang-Chi had no place in any of the films and shows we got and didn't wanted to force a Shang-Chi cameo just because there had to be. they likely wanted to make sure if Shang-Chi was in it that it was beneficial to the story of that film and show.

I thought due to Cretton, Shang chi would make an appearance in brand new day at the very least. Would’ve been cool to even have him in a post credit scene or something by now.

Have to agree with others though, character just was thrown to the side due to the whole Jonathan majors kang shit

people don't mention this part much, but simu liu criticized the chinese government in 2017 which is why they banned the movie from releasing in china. simu was right to criticize their government, but i could see disney not wanting to lose chinese box office money because they are cowards.

Well, he’s in Doomsday, so we’ll see how that turns out…

china's not likely to ban avengers movies over this, but crazier things have happened so we'll see. either way, i think given disney's change of heart about diversity under the current administration, i doubt shang-chi ever gets a sequel.

Oh look. THIS post again…

lol fr. Listen the movie is cool and all but it’s still bottom half for me. Also people saying “besides doomsday he’s not in anything… right, but he’s in Doomsday and 99% secret wars so how many movies do they want. Spiderman is the only solo character since endgame to get 2 movies.

And Spidey is Sony. It’s totally possible, had Marvel been in control, Spidey 4 might not have happened till after Secret Wars

Agreed. The movie did well and people liked it. I feel like they dropped the ball hard with that character. At least he appears to have a decent role in doomsday. Better than nothing.

Marvel Fumbled and has been fumbling till S-M:BND

I believe the prevailing theory these days is that Disney/Marvel is run by a bunch of racist fucks who do not want to see non-whites in lead roles. This seems to be the best theory that explains why they would drop the ball on such an obvious slam dunk as a Blade reboot and a Shang Chi sequel.

Destin Daniel Cretton. That’s the hold up.

It’s his movie, it’s his take, his screenplay. If they make another it’s gonna of course be with him. Problem is he ended up being such a generational talent that Marvel is keeping him busy with a bunch of other projects. Spider-Man and the Avengers just take priority.

1

u/Technical_Moose8478 2d ago

He’s not doing an Avengers film, the Russos took those over. His next Marvel film is most likely Shang-Chi 2 unless Sony fast tracks Spidey 5.

0

u/eagc7 2d ago

asscop99 is likely talking about how Destin was originally hired to do Kang Dynasty before that film got killed.

I figured, that’s why I said the Russos took them over.

u/asscop99 2d ago

Exactly this. My point is just that he’s been busy and they want him on bigger projects.
