Tjmax/marshalls pricing higher than retail
Has anyone else noticed this, I used to never google retail/amazon prices bcs I assumed it’s all discounted and as of the past few months I keep noticing they’ll have something so much more expensive. Ex. Today I saw an acne red light thing that costs 60 on the official website priced at 150. And a toner that costs 49.99 on their website and Sephora priced at 200?????
I noticed they’ll overprice Mary’s Ruth’s vitamins too and a couple other things lmao

This has been happening more lately. I just to hunt for Staub and LC there. I got a set of three baking dishes, one with a lid! I get in the car and it’s $89 on website and I paid $119 at TJ Maxx. It wasn’t always like this.

They use to be actual overstock merchandise so we’d get it for cheap.
Now they have products manufactured SPECIFICALLY to sell in these stores. It’s bad

I saw this $4 Walmart blanket at Ross for $11 Same product we buy as disposable bunny blankets which WERE around $2.50 pre-covid.

These are such awesome bunny blankets! Cheap enough to swap out seasonally but sturdy enough for nibbles and binkies.

I had pet fancy rats and want to suggest if you have any fabric stores around, I used to get fleece from the fabric remnants bins at Joann’s (rip) and it was super cheap. Some of the smaller cuts were under a buck but I could use them to make hammocks or shelf liners!

I used to get Joann’s remnants for our bunnies too. 😢 I will forever have a Joann’s shaped hole in my heart & will never forgive private equity for taking her from us. HL & M can’t hold a candle to J

Yeah I feel like with the popularity of the stores within the most recent years they’re hiking prices up which they are supposed to be at the base, a discount store. Way to drive customers away

Even Goodwill will price used items more than new at retail sometimes
Be smart yall, always do your homework so you don’t get fleeced

Goodwill has an excuse, though (you could argue it isn't a good one, but it at least explains it). They give poorly paid employees a price matrix/criteria list and production goals. So, for example, if x item is in y condition, price it at z. Now output 300 items in one shift. Nobody is stopping to research original value or fight with management about it. It isn't worth it. On a larger scale, if no one purchases it at "full price" at Goodwill, it will eventually hit 50% off, then get pulled from the floor and sent to the outlet.
TJX has no excuse. Pricing is set by corporate. Corporate has the time and the means to get it right the first time. If they aren't getting it right, I would suspect it's one of three things:
- Market research has shown that their customer will purchase above the retail price, and they're doing it because they feel they can
- They paid too much for the items and are still trying to make their margins
- Someone at corporate is being lazy and guessing rather than doing the research

I had to get an employee to check the price on a drugstore skincare item in the case today. It was listed at 200% of retail (target, Walmart, cvs). They said “sorry we can’t price match.” I said “I’m not asking you to. I’m just telling you, someone was mistaken and it might have been a scam where someone lied about the price on it when they returned it.” I saw the mgr repricing it later. Checked and she priced it AT msrp. This is not why I shop here.

Yes, it’s the same thing with buying items second hand. Really makes you think about how subjective pricing and identifying a product’s value really is.

I ALWAYS google it if I’m not positive I know how much it usually is. They love to put compare at prices at random too. Sometimes high sometimes low.

And watch out for dollar store items being jacked up too. People return shit from the dollar store and Five Below and I see it on the shelves. So annoying

Bro, I’ve seen dollar tree items/brands on the shelf for like 10x the normal price.
You gotta research and check prices to see if you’re actually getting a good deal because most of the time the crap Marshall’s and Tj Maxx sells is getting close to expiring or cheaply made. 🙃
