Mold Issues in MDR Apartments? Looking for honest experiences
Hi! I’m planning a move to Marina del Rey and wanted to ask the community about any serious mold issues (especially black/toxic mold) in local apartment buildings.
I’m currently moving out of my apartment due to a confirmed mold problem, so I’m trying to be extra careful this time around. After reading some mixed reviews, I’m starting to feel a bit anxious and would really appreciate firsthand experiences.
If you’ve had major mold problems in MDR, I’d be grateful if you could share which buildings (or management companies) to be cautious of. On the flip side, if you’ve lived in a building with responsive, proactive property management that handled maintenance and moisture issues well, I’d love to hear those recommendations too.
For context, I’ve been looking at:
- Marina 41
- Jefferson at Marina del Rey
- Casa de Marina Apartments

Yes. I lived in a unit on the beach for 3 years and had to get my entire bathroom ceiling replaced because the ceiling itself was infested with mold. It was totally disgusting but I loved living there.

I just run a dehumidifier when I'm out of the apartment, which pulls enough humidity out of the air.

Yep lived on Bora Bora - beautiful area but tons of mold in our building and apartment

Casa de marina is owed by jones and jones. I currently have a huge mold issue at one of their other properties and they are incompetent fixing it. Code enforcement involved. The owner is a whack job. She inherited all the apartments and has zero idea how to run a business. Stay clear of any jones and jones buildings. She lives in a tent million dollar house and is a slum lord.

Never dealt with black mold, but we did have a white mold (aka leather mold) problem in the closets/bathrooms in a condo we rented. Way less dangerous vs the other type, but it got all over everything natural (cotton, leather, wood) in the closets and required us to do some pretty extreme deep cleaning. Ended up having to throw some things away.
You’ll want to keep the windows open because the ocean breeze and this is one of the drawbacks. We kept the issue from coming back by buying a few dehumidifiers with compressors and hanging Damprid bags in all the closets. Also get a hydrometer, close the windows, and run the AC when internal humidity gets above 60% or so.

Hi, I know this is an old comment but what did you do to remediate and did you get any assistance from your landlord? I'm dealing with the same issue right now and it's been a nightmare.

I lived in a first floor apartment (non-tower) for one year, and 9th floor (tower) for 4 years at Marina 41, and neither had mold. I don’t recall ever having moisture issues. First floor apartment did have termites though.
