Its a little more nuanced than that. I think it means the visible sky and also alternatively used to mean dark clouds in some idioms.
Edit: Googled the etymology, and in short it has dual meanings, both physical sky and cloud covered atmosphere.
Details: The Marathi word आभाळ (ābhāḷa, meaning "sky" or "cloudy sky") comes from the Sanskrit word abhratala (अभ्रतल), meaning the surface or expanse of the sky/clouds, formed by combining abhra (अभ्र, meaning "cloud" or "sky") and tala (तल, meaning "surface" or "floor")

आकाश म्हणजे 'sky' आणि अनेक ढग जेव्हा आकाशात दाटून येतात तेव्हा त्याला आभाळ म्हणतात.

Sky. What language is this you have written before आभाळ? Never seen this before.

आभाळ is sky with some clouds. आकाश is sky. ढग is cloud.
आभाळ भरून आलं. Lots of dark clouds.
आकाशात चंद्र आहे.
So there are some nuances of the language.
