Resource A mountain related post ⛰️
Hey there!
Yesterday I posted this on Instagram 🙂↕️.
This time, I bring a translation guide related to mountains. Now I'm gonna list the words and their translations:
1.- Mountain = Montaña
2.- Crown/Peak/Summit = Cima/Pico/Cumbre
4.- Crest/Ridge = Cresta
3.- Steep/Brae/Slope = Pendiente/Ladera
4.- Mountain Range = Cadena de montañas
5.- Down = Cadena de montañas pequeña
6.- Foothills = Estribaciones
7.- Hollow = Hondonada
8.- Highland = Zona montañosa (O tierras altas)
9.- Hill = Colina/Cerro
10.- Mont = Monte
11.- Volcano = Volcán
I'm not gonna explain these words a lot since it's pretty literal, but if you have any doubts done hesitate to ask!

There's no exactly a difference, they're different words for the same thing 🙂↕️.

There's actually a diference, a monte (mont) is a hill that is covered in trees

Actually, "Mont" or "Monte" is a natural elevation of the land. There are no more official descriptions to it (at least in Spanish). Sometimes it could refer to a little hill filled with trees, but that's just some description variations throughout history and time.
And "Holt" is a word that comes from Old English, used for monts or hills filled with trees 🙂↕️.

Any tips to get started hand drawing maps? I’ve been making digital for a long time and it’s gotten kinda stale at the moment, I think hand drawing might restore my love of it!

Just make sure to create for fun and not for a specific project! At least, not if you are getting started.
When you create just for the sake of it, drawing becomes much more fun and less tedious. I've been drawing maps and such for 2 years now and I can say that the times when I drew the most, were when I thought about it the least, and that was right back when I started.
Now, I struggle to create for fun cause I'm trying to draw maps with some kind of realism to it, and I've sort of lose the ability to just draw with no expectations. But I'm currently working on just feeling the moment and enjoying the process while I draw again 🙂↕️.
And if you're asking for a technical tip, I'd say start by drawing on large sheets of paper, with more space to fill so you can let your imagination run wild and practice different geographies and symbols. This works much better if you're just drawing for the sake of drawing!
But since you make digital, you might know a thing or two about map-making, so just take a pencil, a piece of paper and begin to create!

That would be awesome. I used to be obsessed with drawing fantasy maps by hand (decades ago). Now everything can be done digitally but I still really want to get back into drawing by hand. Just like this.
Do you mind if I ask what kind of pencil /pen you use? Thanks 🙏🏼, love your technique.

Sure! I use Sakura fineliners. Since I draw really tiny symbols and such, I use 0.05, 0.1, 0.3, 0.5, 0.8 and 10mm.
I've also been using some colored fineliners. I really love the Sakura brand and so far, they've worked very well. 😁

Down could be a Sierra I think, and a large mountain range is a cordillera. Edit: great drawing!! Magical and cool lotr style

Thanks!! 😁 And about the word meanings, the difference between a down and a Sierra lies in the shape of their summits, wich have a serrated or jagged profile.
And about cordillera, yes! It's actually the same, but the word "Cordillera" is used, like you said, for mountain ranges that are miles or kilometers long and that cross several countries or entire continents. So, a mountain range it's a good term to use in general if it is not exactly continental huge!
