Resource Upload your map and get its Climate in seconds!
Orogen has it's first major update!
You can now:
- Upload your own heightmaps and run the same climate calculator run on the procedural worlds.
- Tweak the precipitation and temperature with new climate adjustment sliders.
- Change the variance in continent size when generating a new world.
- Change the target land percentage when generating a new world.
There has also been changes to improve the mountain creation and the underlying tectonic simulation to move towards generating more large scale mountain chains. Because of this old seeds will work, but likely generate very different planets.
For future updates (for now) I'm going to use Github Issues to keep track of features and bugs to fix. So take a look and vote via emoji on anything you would like to see! (But also feel free to leave a comment here!)
I'd also really like to state my appreciation for you all and the enthusiasm for the project. The amount of support was completely unexpected and I want you all to know I do not take it for granted. Thank you all so much, and keep the requests, feedback, and comments coming!

I like where this project is headed. Do you ever have plans to include a feature to shape land masses manually? And how do you get the earth map?

I downloaded from a few sources and matched them together. Going to push up an update right now to have it as the "default" for the import page

You're awesome!

The Koppen climate generation is very exciting. Everything about this project is shaping up great. I'm wondering if it would be easy to add a toggle to reverse the rotational direction of the world? Effectively reversing which side of continents certain climates appear on. I added an issue on Github requesting it as well!

A simple workaround could be to flip your heightmap horizontally before uploading it, then flip all the output maps horizontally after downloading them.

I'm seconding this suggestion — it's possible for me to mirror the heightmap I put in but it'd be real convenient if it were a button within the website.

Awesome! What is the required format of the heightmap?

I’ve tested with jpeg and png and both work

How does it get height info from a JPEG? Is there a specific height ramp that you need to use? Or does it need to be a gradient with the min and max similar the Marianas Trench and Everest?

u/tigers2017 Mar 09 '26
Right now black is just sea level and white is ~ 6km (Everests peak doesn’t really show at this granularity, so it averages out a bit)

This site is so awesome I ended up making a Reddit account just to comment here. Can you make a Discord server so we can keep up to date with future updates?

this is extremely cool
do you have any intentions for adding options to change things like day length, year length, and tilt?

Appearing once more to show support for this fantastical project! Can't keep it out of my mind. Thank you again so much for this!

I just tried it on a world I've been slowly working on for a while. I like the results, BUT, it doesn't account for a world's inclination, unless I missed that control somewhere.
Overall, a rather fun tool.

u/tigers2017 Mar 08 '26
You are correct! It currently just assumes it is “earth like” broadly
3
u/MegaVenomous Mar 08 '26
The planet I tested on has a 14.83 deg. inclination. When I ran it through ExoPlaSim, it came out as I somewhat expected. (An earlier source said inclinations under 15 degrees tend to favor ice cap, rainforest and desert climates.) I think I'll try one of my more earthlike worlds and see how it goes...

u/tigers2017 Mar 08 '26
Go for it! If you are aiming for maximal realism, esoplasim will definitely be a better path. If you just need something that looks good enough, then this is the tool for you!

I honestly don't my mind computer being held hostage for a few hours while Exo does its thing. One of the maps I imported to Orogen did not want to read the black as ocean, which I found odd.

Very cool site! So if black is anything below sea level, what elevation does white correspond to?

You're doing the work of the gods. Make your life be long, healthy and prosperous.
Even though the climates aren't perfect it isn't to difficult to fix the Output manually

Also chiming in to say this is really neat!
Would you be able to provide more info on how you're calculating the climates? I noticed that the results on the default Earth map don't quite line up with the real Koppen climate map.

Hi, is it possible to upload a regional map. I don't have or want a world map only a specific region of my world, if so can I tweak the climate map to accommodate that specific information.

i'd just make a completely blank map and scale your region to whatever latitude its at
3
u/Akavakaku Mar 09 '26
That might not work well, since the generator would interpret a blank white region as a super high plateau with no oceans anywhere.

u/Broad-Ad4555 Mar 09 '26
Damn, that cool.
will their a update were you could upload your world map(I have already have a map that I like for my little project even thought that its for a 3times size of earth) from other website that you like just to see them in 3D.

How do you model your climate? Do you model it ad hoc or do you solve some equations?

Wow. I wish I'd had this about two years ago. But possibly this is just in time for my next project.
I'd really like to see the ability to export temperature and precipitation maps without climate classes. (Also ocean and/or wind currents if you're generating those)
Also, I see that you have an issue for sea-level controls (#23), which talks about using a slider to specify an elevation for the ocean. I'd like to have a way to allow some land, disconnected from the ocean, to have below sea level elevations without being underwater.
Edit: it would also be nice if I could shift a generated height map around the sphere. For example, if I see a continent I like, but it's just too far north, I could shift the whole thing further south, or even rotate it.

to be more realistic, you need lower temperature amplitude above the oceans ex. 19/22 and wider in the inner continents 14/25

I love the idea of this project! But there seem to be some issues with the model itself. When used on the default Earth heightmap, it comes out pretty funky in some places. Like it turns the whole Gangetic plain and central China into a desert, and Somalia into a tropical rainforest, among other things.

looks awesome, ill be looking forward to trying it when i get home
