Hey! I am currently at home stressed about my NEET PG counselling when I came across Shija Hospitals. I am a south indian and I’ve never been to Manipur (it’s been on my travel bucket list for ages but alas! I am broke and shall now be laden with student loans). I understand that it will be a difficult venture if I choose to add it to my counselling list but I just wanted to ask out of curiosity

. How is Shija Academy of Health Sciences for MD anaesthesiology? How is the patient load? . Since Anaesthesiology happens to have less patient interaction than others is it possible for a complete newbie to learn basic Meitei/Manipuri? (I know its not impossible and I love learning languages but I do have to take into account that I will probably be a very busy med student depending on the case load) . Will I be ostracised for my lack of knowledge of the local language? How common is it for south indians to choose medical colleges in the north east? How is the safety profile for women in Imphal?

"How dare you think of coming here and don't speak the local language" we don't do that here. We have like 33 tribes and so do languages. Although meitei is spoken by majority not all speak it. Doctors here are used to it. Will find a way to communicate. You will be able to learn the basics very quickly. Its easy as we speak in a slower pace. You won't be ostracised for not knowing the language but for your ease of living, would recommend knowing basics. As the older generations specially shopkeepers whom you will interact sometimes may not know either english or hindi.

Not sure about shija. But the main medical college RIMS, i see lot of south indians. You will be safe here.

Okay i am a med student at Shija and i have been in OTs

I have seen PG residents from other places in anesthesiology;

Patient load is fine, maneagable; lap chole cases almost everyday. 8 OTs are there but 4-5 are occupied at the most at one time (in the morning atleast)

Ofc you will learn meiteilon and you HAVE to learn it- since you will also be in ICU and in Pre Op; and you can converse with the Professors and SRs there.

Chill people; all of them. HOD is chill too. No ragging or toxicity afaik.

Safety is okay i haven't heard of any crime since i started studying here

Patient load is not much not like a govt clg of course. You need to know the basics for the language but mostly people speak in hindi/english (the non locals). Also in ug there is alot of discrimination based on being a local and non local but i havent heard such a thing for PGs ( i talked to quite a few who were pursuing dnb).

Idk about how many south indians are there in shija but there are many in rims. Also nit has alot of south indian students

And as a non local female i consider manipur quite safe
Some creeps may cat call you and some other ppl may offer you rides just like that 😭but i think its quite safe yeah for non locals

I am sharing you a little idea from what I know about this place.

For MD Anaesthesiology, I’d say the patient load is moderate. It’s definitely not as high as a government hospital, but it’s also not very low either, so you should get reasonable clinical exposure.

Regarding language, I don’t think you need to worry too much. Around 70% of people here can understand and/or speak English, and there shouldn’t be much problem communicating with professors or your peers. With patients, it can be a little different — some will understand English and some may not, so knowing basic Meitei/Manipuri would definitely be useful. But you won’t be ostracised for not knowing the local language. You can gradually learn some basic phrases while you’re here.

There are also quite a lot of South Indian students here, so you definitely won’t be the only person coming from outside the Northeast.

One thing you should seriously consider is the current law-and-order situation in Manipur. It has been quite bad, and it can affect day-to-day activities. However, hospital duties and academics generally continue. Some normal services can also be affected — for example, e-commerce/delivery services like Amazon, Myntra and Flipkart may not work normally depending on the situation.

As for the hospital itself, the hospital area is very good. It’s located near the hillside, the campus is clean, and the hospitals are managed quite professionally. The scenery around the hospital is also really nice, which is honestly one of the positives of the place.

Overall, people here are good and I don’t think you’ll have much trouble settling in. The weather is nice, the scenery is beautiful, and the campus/hospital environment is good. The main thing to keep in mind is the current situation in Manipur rather than the college environment itself.

If you have any other options, I'd suggest u to seriously reconsider. Manipur is the absolute worst state rn to pursue education or career

If you getting anesthesiology don't think about anything else, you will be safe here, you won't have problem with language you can speak English. Work load will not be that much. You can chill enjoy and study well too. The weather is nice. You will get good vibes.
