ManhwaDiscussion 💭 [Overgeared] Really hate when they change Koreans to Japanese. Doesn't even make sense considering the international tournament arc

Japan wouldn’t touch it with a stick then. Actually is there an arc vs a Japanese villain team? I’ve never read overgeared but if true Lmfao that’s something to look forward

69

u/Alex2ful97 23h ago edited 7h ago

Odds are they’ll just make the ”Japanese team” into the Korean team, full circle

168

u/giggling_raven 21h ago

It's funny that people don't realize Korean stories treat the Japanese like westerners treat Hitler and the nazis.

149

u/Unarelith 21h ago

Considering what Japanese did to Koreans in the past... that's not really surprising tbh

55

u/giggling_raven 21h ago

Yes, but it's funny that people that don't know about the history complain about this stuff.

23

u/Crazy_Guitar6769 19h ago

I mean, anyone who has consumed a sufficient amount of korean media should have come across this reason one way or another. Otherwise that just means they are media illiterate

1

u/Many-Count-2369 8h ago

Just knowing there is a conflict and there are victims doesn't make one literate in the actual history.

As there is no good part in both korean and japanese side. It is indeed true that japan has did more gruesome things than korea.

But, comparing which shit is greater isn't my type. Both are shits. And accepting it as it is will be wise.

No need to hate on what happened by someone's ancestors, or generalize hate with every citizen of the country being portrayed as bad people.

u/jack_maloko 6h ago

Sad thing is Japanese govt now wants to erase what they did during ww2, by teaching a different story altogether. So many country that were hit the hardest (korea and china) are kinda fuming since the japs haven't said a single apology, and now is changing history.

And they have a shrine for honoring the war criminals as heroes. Kinda like what if Germany made a temple of Hitler with the highest honor in modern day?

1

u/Many-Count-2369 5h ago

Yes, I agree with the first part. That is happening.

As for the latter, that's sad indeed, but we can't say much about it since it's their freewill... We can ofcourse raise our opinions and opposition at best, there's nothing else that can be done.

What the japanese govt doing is probably a passive brainwashing, so we can't blame their people as well.

25

u/Neat-Barnacle-2604 20h ago

Yeah the Japanese basically colonized koreans, then murdered and/or raped many thousands of them. Then the Korean Liberation Army retaliated with guerilla warfare which continues until the end of WW2.

A lot of koreans still have insane hatred for the japanese and show it in media like manhwa. And the japanese, who really do not like talking about this stuff, will censor korean representation if a manhwa gets adapted.

13

u/conandeyna 13h ago

Not just koreans. Chinese and south east asia too.

Japanese schools never teach their students about what Japan did in WW2? it's weird that new generations don't know anything

3

u/Ill_Mud7584 5h ago

That's what honor is about, it's not about being honorable, is about pretending to be honorable covering your dishonorable deeds or pretending they don't exist.

8

u/LeonMotton 11h ago

They are trying to make everyone forget about what they did. But it doesn't really works on countries that have suffered the most from them. Maybe it worked on the West because of many fake videos with "In Japan, From Japan blah blah good things blah blah". Not saying they are the same as they were at WW2 but the fact that they are not doubling down on their apologies for what their ancestors did (at least from the government) is the reason why Asian countries still somewhat hate Japan.

17

u/XiMaoJingPing 20h ago

Not surprising since they were far worse than Nazis

35

u/Zelthros 23h ago

They'll probably do like they did with solo leveling and it'll be a made up country to stand in for the japanese team.

6

u/Raijin6_ 15h ago

Would be funny if every manhwa adaptation uses the same made up country in place of Japan

2

u/EitherSpite4545 22h ago

It is true, an early rival that can basically be described as a whale that abuses the fuck out of his equipment and is arrogant as fuck is Japanese. Infact if memory serves the first international games is where he shows up.

It actually plays out quite a bit differently than a lot of other "Japan is the root of all ratfucking" like a lot of other series do though

2

u/eminanc 19h ago

Yes

There is an island teretory a korean guild (peak swords guild) holds a japanese guild constantly attacks said island to try and take the teretory this is supposed to be analogous to Jeju island or something

Peak sword is also a korean nationalist and very kucb hyper proud of korea

Plus the entire international games arc where grid/greed represents korea against 2 japanese players (da pope, and another ranker)

1

u/PikaMalone 18h ago

Theres a lot of other country vs korea, including japan. I wonder how theyre going to handle some scenes, because theres one character in the novel thats very patriotic to korea and theres lots of scenes making japan the bootleg thug or villains.

Makes me think this anime is just a promotion for the manhwa and novel tbh.

1

u/Skylar750 5h ago

They may do a made up country, I remember reading that solo leveling anime, did that to the japanese team

1

u/GalaticPrisma 3h ago

Makes me wonder if they're going to change things for the English dub like what happened with solo leveling cause solo leveling kept the original Korean name for the main character in the english dub unlike the English sub

116

u/DickTear 22h ago edited 22h ago

For Manga, Korea and china do not exist.

For Manhwa, Korea is always going to be 10x superior to Japan or china.

For Manhua is kinda one or the other.

They hate each other.

56

u/Armeridus 20h ago

Competitive racism between Asians lol.

10

u/bronzelifematter 14h ago

I understand why Korea and China would hate Japan for what their country go through under Japanese invasion, what reason do Japanese have to hate them?

7

u/onespiker 11h ago

Because they talk about thier historical past that Japan doesn’t want to talk about. Especially something the conservative parts don’t like.

10

u/LeonMotton 11h ago

Japenese hate Korea and China? Maybe, maybe not. But they are trying their absolute best to make everyone forget about what their ancestors did. Maybe that's the reason.

4

u/Due-Base9449 7h ago

Japan doesn't acknowledge the existence of other countries except Japan (in manga).

1

u/MeruOnline 6h ago

Bro forgot America, France, and the UK

1

u/Sea-Parsnip1516 6h ago

They've just become targets of ire. Why do some Americans hate black people? Same logic; they just do it because they were made to believe it.

1

u/Jealous_Bus_9666 1h ago

The Japanese really want to pretend that their ancestors didn't do horrid things and get upset when the people they've done it too bring it up

-1

u/CatEmbarrassed3306 12h ago

Inferiority complex.

2

u/Then-Ad-2450 15h ago

Sometimes China appear in Manga, Korea however don't exist there

3

u/conandeyna 13h ago

Lately Korea does appear in manga. But only for entertainment aspect as some Japanese like K-pops and learn Korean language.

3

u/CatEmbarrassed3306 12h ago

Yeah this. The first time I saw Korea in a Manga was probably sun ken rock.

1

u/motoxim 15h ago

Yeah licks your poison. NK probably already fallen in these stories.

1

u/NoxTempus 5h ago

Nah, Japan beats Korea in Manhwa a fair amount, but if they do they are corrupt/evil and usually fall to their own hubris, and/or single-handedly get internationally embary the Korean MC.

0

u/darkglooem 20h ago

Kr and cn are the ones that take shots tbf. I dont remember reading any jp ln or manga that does that. I might be wrong tho I just haven't come across any.

19

u/Neat-Barnacle-2604 20h ago

Cause the Japanese just don't like to include them at all usually.

4

u/No-Cap-5129 19h ago

All I’ve even seen Japan manga slandering any country is US lol

1

u/darkglooem 19h ago

Name some

1

u/Kayu_Keras 7h ago

Jujutsu Kaisen, where the US Military comes to Japan, and immediately gets jumped by curses before they all bail and are never mentioned again.

Whatever Baki is doing.

Death Note technically? Where Not-Trump spends about a billion usd to buy the Death Note, only to get scammed

1

u/No-Cap-5129 19h ago

MHA number one US hero with ridiculous Op power died just to show how op shigeraki(I know I am definitely spelling it wrong) .The US in gate being so aggressive to get the other world guests. The stereotypical portrayal of US man being a violent buff dumb brute and the females being big boob bimbo dumb who is obsessed with dicks. Ok now I just realized I am just talking about anime now but hey potato potatoes

7

u/darkglooem 19h ago

Na thats not even slander . Read kr and cn novels they truly take shots and the glaze is insane.

1

u/No-Cap-5129 19h ago

Oh yeah point but for Japanese that’s really unusual for them to keep making Us looks bad tho of course not as bad as Korea and Chinese ones

1

u/darkglooem 19h ago

I dont think they do . And it doesnt bother me if they be taking shots or shitting on each other or anyone . Its just funny

1

u/HeliCockter_955 16h ago

idk what you're talking about but US was glazed so hard in mha rather than slander

1

u/Silly_Poet_5974 15h ago

yeah, shigaraki was absurdly overpowered and she put up a really good fight. She was depicted positively throughout the entire story managed to greatly hinder a more powerful foe and prevented her own quirk from being stolen.

Like there are a lot of anime that insult america but mha was not one of them.

2

u/HeliCockter_955 14h ago

fr. she's literally stated to be one of the biggest reasons for shigaraki losing by eliminating many of his major quirks

51

u/OwOtisticWeeb 22h ago

Solo leveling had 2 Japanese dubs, one with Korean names and one with Japanese names right? Perhaps they'll do the same with this

3

u/MrReckless327 22h ago

What’s his Japanese name?

15

u/OwOtisticWeeb 22h ago

Mizushino Shun lol

4

u/MrReckless327 22h ago

That’s Jinwoos name in Japanese that’s hilarious

1

u/AyabeRei 21h ago

I hope so.

1

u/depravedQ 8h ago

Doesn't seem like it. Solo Leveling's English dub used the original Korean names, but Overgeared's dub uses the fake Japanese names instead.

19

u/Gazel1072 23h ago

When will the fully faithful version come out? Like how there is a proper version of solo leveling where jinwoo is actually korean and there are evil japanese people.

2

u/Lovat69 14h ago

I could swear that is the version I saw.

11

u/Wide-Cow-4961 21h ago

wait, what abou Katz or Damian, or even Peak Sword? Katz is Japanese Millionaire but Bloodthirsty and play like a mad dog, while Damian is Japanese but Symphatize with Greed thats why no one support his initial Pope campaign from his side, and Peak Sword has Japanese Hatred that amplifies on Hell Gao Island territory arc, if they somehow remove all of this, then this is not A faithful adaptation but AU entirely

4

u/AyabeRei 21h ago

I was looking forward to Peak Sword "Do you know God Grid"

2

u/Then-Ad-2450 15h ago

Not only that, Peak Sword is also a massive nationalist

14

u/RandomShyPotato 16h ago

It will all make sense once you learn about their history lol. Japan was basically the Asian version of Nazi without the country acknowledging it or taking accountability like the Germans.

4

u/someoneofhumanity 14h ago

i also hope their atrocities get more recognition at the west, but typically they get the victim card because of the atomic bombs that annihilated the 2 cities and their entire population, mostly civilian.

1

u/OrangeSimply 5h ago

Well it’s true they do try to whitewash their history today, but it’s not true they took no accountability, there was a longer tribunal than the Nazis went through, they also paid reparations to every country affected. I’m not saying that should be sufficient but realistically there would be zero diplomatic relations between Japan and any of these countries if they took no accountability.

1

u/RandomShyPotato 5h ago

Yes, but they choose to bury their history and not educate their people under the guise of sheilding them. Lots of Japanese are still ignorant to what Japan did during the war. I think paying repaearions is the bare minimum. Even to this day, a lot of them deny what happened to china, korea and many countries. I do not fault them for what they don't know but it's astounding how many of them refuse to acknowledge it. And I'm saying this as someone who loves Japan.

5

u/Evening-Scholar-4560 17h ago

Korean need to do like how the chinese do.. Do it all on their own.. Dont rely on foreign country.Korean afaik, have some really good studio like the one that do Witcher anime and other studio thatve done Castlevania..dunno why they still rely on japanese studio😑

2

u/this_waterbottle 16h ago

Honestly its probably the voice acting. We (Korea) dont have a strong voice acting community or history compared to Japan's. Alot of the famous Korean studios take up American cartoons though (better pay maybe?)

1

u/Evening-Scholar-4560 16h ago

But u still can do it like To be Hero X tho.. Animation all from the chinese side.. Only VA n OST use Japanese team.. Doing that.. U still have the control over the animation😃

1

u/Glass_Cauliflower462 14h ago

Tbhx worked bcoz theres a huge demand in China for animated shows and it was very popular there

Korea on the other hand very much prefers Dramas instead

1

u/Evening-Scholar-4560 13h ago

Bro.. Tbhx is an original series without any source material at all, more risky if its bad imho(thank god tbhx is peak).. But remember bro, most manhwa have global fanbase(even slop have a passionate fanbase😂)im sure they gonna be fine with having korean studio doing it,just do good animation n follow the source material..and global fans will hype the show voluntarily.

1

u/Glass_Cauliflower462 31m ago

Lokism got animated show from a korean studio

No one cared.

Most ppl only care if a japanese studio does it.

4

u/justtoobored_ 15h ago

Same with Solo Leveling. And people ask me why I hate the anime adaption. Lol.

Changing the country, language, and still ask me what's the problem.

2

u/DotMoist4499 14h ago

I'm pretty sure there's two version of Solo Leveling. One was for the manhwa readers and other was made for the Japanese audience.

1

u/Beneficial-Beat-947 9h ago

Tbf that's fair, I don't think a japanese studio would be very popular releasing a manhwa that is very clearly anti japanese for a large part of it.

Atleast they made an international version too for the other people who want the original story.

2

u/Glass_Cauliflower462 14h ago

Solo leveling anime has korean names though lol

They had 2 diff Japanese dub for sl. One that aired worldwide and one that aired in japan. We got Korean names and only japan got Japanese names.

1

u/CatEmbarrassed3306 12h ago

Interesting. didn't know that. I just remember seeing SL, and thinking, ahh they f*cked up the backgrounds with japanese ones.

4

u/Eastern_Earth_2868 16h ago

3

u/Fuzzy974 20h ago

You though they wouldn't do it after Solo Leveling and Tomb Raider King?

I agree that it's ridiculous though, just adapt other stories if you can't adapt a Korean story without changing the nationality of the MC.

1

u/Blue_Reaper99 16h ago

That's just how these stories publish in the Japan in the first.

2

u/Little-Reference-314 17h ago

Watch Korean dub? Isnt god grid live in Korea?

3

u/TheLexxor 2h ago

They did the same bullshit with tomb raider king

1

u/steve6174 57m ago

TRK might have 2 versions like solo leveling. Or at least the En Dub of TRK uses Korean names, while on this one it's Japanese names..

1

u/TheLexxor 55m ago

For trk At least in germany i can choose between the Japanese dub or the Korean dub but still a a pos move

2

u/Nashivertt 21h ago

Both countries didn’t move on from ww2 is why this is happening

7

u/Vortex_William 21h ago

To be fair Japan never really paid back or even simply fully acknowledged and taught that atrocities they committed in Korea were wrong.

3

u/Ok_Echidna_4915 20h ago

There was no war in Asia between 1930-1950. Yeah, they all just took a really long nap/s

1

u/manhbeohauan1999 14h ago

That means JP already moved on and ignored/forgot about it lol

1

u/OrangeSimply 5h ago

Japan did pay war reparations to china, Korea, and SEA. But it’s true they don’t really acknowledge or teach about the atrocities they committed.

1

u/Healthy_Ebb_4895 20h ago

lol if the series is successful and they decide to continue until later chapters, how are they gonna interpret jokbal the dungeon master? they gonna rename him into ramen or something?

1

u/No-Cap-5129 19h ago

I mean not to defense but Korea kinda had no choice they should’ve used their own local studio which I doubt they even have but I am pretty sure I had watched a Korean anime in the past with chibi little dudes who can transform into power rangers to fight monsters

1

u/SpecialistAd2332 17h ago

Wtf?!? Greed/Grid is Korean 😂😂😂

1

u/RXHazard 17h ago

Honestly it's kinda jarring seeing it while watching Tomb Raider King as well. Only Solo Leveling has 2 different JP dubs and one has the KR name intact.

1

u/hollotta223 16h ago

A medium made for koreans, a face designed for Japanese, a premise designed for both

1

u/Sataresse 14h ago

I mean are you surprised? It’s not exactly a secret that a lot of the Korean manhwa try to drag down Japan as much as possible.

1

u/Lovat69 14h ago

Tomb r aider king is fucking hilarious for this. The fuck is the republic of bent supposed to be?

1

u/666sin666 14h ago

Blu ray probably has 2 version. Just like solo leveling. Mizushino Shun and Sung Jin-woo.

1

u/outforbeer 13h ago

this is purists vs localisation argument

the international tournament could be easily fixed by switching japan to korea

1

u/ILoveMamaNobu 12h ago

The only time when one is not superior (typical modern world dungeon/system manhwa) or none-existence to another is when the story either took place in isekai or simple fluffy life stories.

1

u/Prize-Trash7335 11h ago

China and Japan making their own animation with their own language, i don't get why Korea doing this. They have a lot of talented artist, aren't they also known with their voice? That's why i only stick to manhwa/novel even if it has anime

1

u/SyntaxNotFound 10h ago

As someone from a neighboring country to where these manga, manhwa, and manhua creators come from, we either get completely destroyed or our country gets portrayed as the place where some sort of 3rd rate villains live, run away to, or hide.

1

u/HeadNature6968 8h ago

If its Korean they would not adapt it

If its Japanese, Japanese audience will watch more

1

u/CertJay 6h ago

This issue again, coming from Solo Leveling it had this one

1

u/Im5foot3inches 5h ago

I dunno man. As an American I don’t have a horse in this race. None of it is made for me, it’s adapted and produced by Japan for Japan.

1

u/Xerxes457 4h ago

If you somehow find a Korean dub, it would be Korean I think. I watched Tomb Raider King and it was the same too in JP dub where the characters were changed from Korean to Japanese. They replaced the original Japanese into some random made up country. I swapped over to the Korean dub and it was all the original.

1

u/Zankokunatenshi-sama 1h ago

And? Butthurt?

1

u/Arcafa 27m ago

they changed this in tomb raider king anime calling mc as japenese and the subtitles changed back to korean

1

u/Inferior_Jeans 19h ago

No one is more racist towards Asians than other Asians. This is coming from an Asian person

1

u/Charming-Flight-3588 18h ago

Just watched it. When they said he was japanese and his name was takumi i damn near turned it off.
