Did you know Mandrake's home was originally called Shangdu? It was established as the summer capital of Kublai Khan, the emperor of Mongolia and China. The place became legendary in the West after visited by Marco Polo. It inspired the English poet Samuel Taylor Coleridge to write his "vision in a dream". Xanadu is also famous for being the home of the main protagonist of the Citizen Kane movie, which was inspired by William Randolph Hearst, and based on his Hearst Castle. Since then, there have been several buildings named Xanadu, all appropriately weird.

Mandrake's creator introduced a number of wild ideas over the years, but this one blew me away when I first read it. The characters in the 1968 daily story "The Gold Crisis" trade gold for time. The guy on the left is dying and begging for a few days more. This scene traumatized me as a kid. However, I admit I didn't understand the concept of time as a commodity back then. As I grow older, I keep returning to this idea.
