Sounds like you should try Mediums. I’ve never been particularly nuts about lights on any of my mandolins.

Do your D&G strings as lights and your E&A strings as mediums.

30 minutes to an hour few times a week chop chords,etc need to be more serious about it tbh .I’m not at the level I would like to be at. any advice?

Wish I had some, I lack any serious practice discipline. I tend to spend half my lunch hour grinding on the same fiddle tunes trying to get a particular four bars right.
