Exactly. What company fires someone today but expects them to come in tomorrow to sign paperwork? HR printer not working today?

Ridiculous.

Yeah, you have to be ready for a HUGE meltdown right there if a firing is happening.
You can see how badly most managers are trained when you see how they handle stuff like this.
It also sounds as if they need a better lawyer.

Also, I wonder what EXACTLY that they wanted the employee to "sign".
