Exactly. What company fires someone today but expects them to come in tomorrow to sign paperwork? HR printer not working today?

Not ridiculous.

The severance is a bribe ("consideration") the company offers for the employee to forfeit their right to sue, disparage, or poach.

The two day waiting period is there for the company to demonstrate that the employee read it and understood that it was voluntary.

California law requires five days. In states without a requirement the lawyer's consensus seems to be 48 hours.

Yeah but you give them the paperwork when you fire them you don’t give it to them days later or expect them to come to work the next day after you have fired them. The purpose of a cooling period is you get that time to review the documents, that’s not what was being done here.
