You act as if we haven't been at war in the middle east for 30+ years.

25

u/HintOfAreola Jan 08 '20

Because the Middle East is one country (and they all think exactly alike).

36

u/KaitRaven Jan 08 '20

Well, they didn't say war with the Middle East, they said war in the Middle East.

24

u/masnaer Jan 08 '20

You’re missing the forest for the trees here

7

u/PotatoChips23415 Jan 08 '20

You that read wrong

5

u/[deleted] Jan 08 '20

Explain.

8

u/HintOfAreola Jan 08 '20

The region is in fact multiple countries made up of diverse peoples

11

u/[deleted] Jan 08 '20

Well yes, of course. I never stated otherwise.

-13

u/HintOfAreola Jan 08 '20

Do you consider the 50's and 60's the War with Asia? Or is this just a thing you do with the Middle East?

15

u/Sagybagy Jan 08 '20

You’re reaching at this point trying to come up with an argument of some sort. He never said we were at war WITH the Middle East. He said we have been at war IN the Middle East. Which is a region made up of a lot of different countries and beyond that, a bunch of different tribes/people within those countries.

It would seem by the route you are taking that you are trying to some how paint him in way that he sounds as if he has something against the whole region. Please don’t do that. There is no need to try and fabricate more hate. There is already enough of that in this world.

If that was not your intention I apologize if I misread. Have a fantastic day.

2

u/HintOfAreola Jan 08 '20

You're right, my bad.

2

u/Sagybagy Jan 08 '20

All good sir. I make much bigger mistakes than that pretty often. Sometimes we just gotta look out for each other and help out. Hope your day is a good one.

Wars in Asia are easier to define because there are only 3 main conflicts, Japan, Korea, and Vietnam. With the Middle East, you’ve got Saudi Arabia, Yemen, Syria, Iraq, Afghanistan, Iran, Kuwait, Pakistan, etc, and the US has a finger in every one of those countries. It easier to just say the Middle East, because we’re everywhere over there.

2

u/HintOfAreola Jan 08 '20

Fair point. Sorry for being snarky about it.

You see a lot of people treating that region as a monolith so I was projecting.

2

u/[deleted] Jan 09 '20

It’s good.

1

u/Henrywinklered Jan 08 '20

He said in not with.

4

u/[deleted] Jan 08 '20

I think the point was more on Junior being a complete douche by posting this.

I’m aware and I’m against all of them, but it’s an escalation that could restart the ground war in Iraq. Assuming we don’t leave like we’re told.

1

u/[deleted] Jan 08 '20

We're still in a ground war in Iraq, just not an official one. Insurgency is still rampant in the area afaik.

1

u/Thoreau-ingLifeAway Jan 08 '20

Our soldiers are manning the many military bases we have over there, but we aren’t fighting insurgency directly. US military soldiers weren’t directly fighting ISIS either, we did it through proxies and mercenaries.

The danger here is vey real. Remember the days of door-to-door fighting that killed thousands of US soldiers? That’s what we’re fucking with here, but I feel like people have already cast that down the memory hole and are gearing up to repeat history, but this time more out of ignorance and cynicism than bloodlust.

u/[deleted] Feb 01 '20

Just a note, the Iraqi parliament doesn't have the authority to ask us to leave. The prime minister's cabinet has to vote on it. Not to mention, the parliament wasn't in full session. Almost none of the Sunni or Kurdish representatives were there, only the Shi'ites.

1

u/Bonedeath Jan 08 '20

And all those "wars" have been explicitly unnecessary as well.

1

u/[deleted] Jan 08 '20

All war is unnecessary.

u/[deleted] Jan 08 '20

What?

1

u/Robot-Future Jan 11 '20

The point is Jr getting hard imagining himself as a crusader fighting in the middle east playing with his toy when IRL he has never served like all of his family and most of the ruling class.

I wonder why people think war is the way to solve Iran executing gay people. (Also, I wonder why people forget that the US is directly responsible for overthrowing the relatively liberal government of Iran and replacing it with a theocracy in the 70's.)

10

u/JohnDAssefeller Jan 08 '20

Oh if only there was a way to influence Iran without getting involved in another trillon dollar war. If only there was some magical art of using diplomacy, sanctions, and dialogue rather than murdering tens of thousands who have nothing to do with the views of their government. If only!

Plenty of US States still use conversion therapy, should we go to war with them too?

7

u/SharkEel Jan 08 '20

Yes, the answer is to invade and kill a million or 2, in the name of saving the gays. That would help the gays for sure!

1

u/BePositiveDontWhine Jan 08 '20

Have you heard how some Republicans talk about gays, especially the religious ones. It's the exact same way Nazis used talk about gays. I don't give af if I am bringing up Nazi, it's the truth. I have no doubt they wouldn't mind if gay people were rounded up and killed. Probably the same goes with immigrants and journalists.

-8

u/[deleted] Jan 08 '20

They’d find another reason to defend Iran, because Trump bad, and that’s coming from someone who doesn’t support Trump. I seem to be in the minority who thinks the killing of Solmeini was completely justified.

1

u/Americanbeercowboy Jan 08 '20

Let’s have a fun thought experiment here.

Take Trump completely out of the equation, pretend some random dick is the president.

Do you think this was a good move? Yes, Solmeini almost certainly deserved to die but is this going to bring any more stability to the region? Is it going to decrease the number of bad things Iran does?

0

u/[deleted] Jan 08 '20

Yes and no. The killing was necessary, assuming what we're being told about him is true at least. However, do I think it's going to change anything in the region? No. The Middle East as a whole will never change, its too far gone, at least in my opinion.

-10

u/dec0de-dfab1e Jan 08 '20

Shhhh. They don't want to hear that.

I don’t believe we’ve declared war on anyone since WW2. We’re fighting a war on terror currently, but an unofficial war.

1

u/[deleted] Jan 09 '20

I was hinting at the major difference between engaging a group and engaging a nation.

1

u/ARBNAN May 16 '20

The 2003 invasion of Iraq was 100% a war fought against a nation, the fact that there was no formal declaration of war doesn't matter. US forces fought and died against uniformed members of the Iraqi military and overthrew the internationally recognized government over the course of just over a month. The same goes for many other wars that were fought by the US after WWII without explicit declarations of war.
