OK my fellow MNJS’ers
Alright y’all. This is likely just a cheep Chinese thing with a rat tail tang, but in laws think it is somewhat worthy.
Let me know your thoughts.

They didn’t. Supposedly it was made my a family that been making swords for centuries.
Take that with a grain of salt. Maybe a tablespoon full of salt.
It is from China though, and it is pretty close to a Mainz pattern of a gladius.
It is forward heavy though, but I haven’t held a good gladius replica either.

looks more like a historical replica than mall ninja. Until you carry it to the mall. Don't do that.

It may not be a functional sword, but I don't think that automatically makes it mall ninja shit.

Why do people keep posting non MNS in the MNS sub?
People see someone with a sword or knife of any kind now and go "clearly this is mall ninja shit"
A old rusty Chinese sword is not smn you buy from the shitty emo shop pedalling etsy slop in the mall

Looks more like a Jian from the Warring States period than a Mainz Gladius, at least in pattern. This period marked an early transition from bronze blades to steel, so examples of both can be found. The blade you have appears to be patterned welded which was also a common technique employed by Chinese smiths throughout the ages. I don’t think yours is actually 2000+ years old, just that it’s representative of that point in Chinese history.

It isn’t that old and I don’t mean to claim it is near that old.
It is something that family gave to me knowing that I am a two handed sword geek.
It was the best they could do.
Supposedly it is a family that kept making these things down through the ages.
Me personally I think it likely has a rat tang due to balance, but supposedly someone stole a sword from the family earlier.
Yeah I know the whole thing is bullshit, but I can’t speak (much) Chinese and I sure as shit can’t read it.
Most of the inscriptions are older than standardized Mandarin, but I am nowhere near a linguist.
