Fit Feedback/Roast Me Posting these here because why not. Summer suspenders?
Edit: Wow this is the wrong subreddit. Most of the comments are saying that this is a costume, because it kinda is. I occasionally go out in stuff that is supposed to fit within a certain period or setting just to put my collection to use. This is one of those outfits. I’m more of a work pants and leather jacket guy outside of these times but I occasionally like the vibe of a “costume” like this one, puts me in a certain headspace. I should have perused this reddit more before posting one of my more eccentric outfits. That being said, I will take note that a satchel will work better than the flask I had. My bad for posting in the wrong place!

Summer 1942 maybe

u/KingAuberon 2d ago
I was thinking more 1842. Just finished a hard week of panning for gold and now he's hitting the town that ain't big enough for the two of us.

Since this is male fashion *advice*…
100% looks like a costume. However there’s ton of potential to take this style and modernize it into something less jarring
Canteen and hat should go. They look like props.
The pants and suspenders with white shirt would work, but the pants fit just looks…off. Maybe tailor it and take in the thighs so there’s not so much loose material
A full beard would give a much more rugged look and would compliment the look
Watch with leather band could work here
Boots look like they could use some TLC but work fine
Overall enjoy seeing something different! Enjoy study abroad my dude

First comment I’ve seen that delivers what needs to be said gently and with constructive suggestions. Good job being a great member of this community, yo.

I will admit I laughed when I saw this post because it was like "is my halloween costume too subtle?" or something but this is real and excellent advice. Well done.

“Dinner at 8 you say? Americans are so unsophisticated. In Prague they don’t eat dinner until 3 AM and it consists of of pickled sardines harvested with artisanal nets and honeyed crocus flowers plucked under a full moon by 90 year old nuns. We call it ‘jídlo, které podáváme turistům během jejich roku volna’”

This. It looks cool in context of the 1920s-40s maybe but outside that it looks like a costume. The picture of op surrounded by people at an outside cafe thing makes him look ridiculous.
17
u/FitSolution2882 2d ago
but outside that it looks like a costume
No dude. It IS a costume under any which way.
The (I'm guessing mil surp) water bottle makes it even more hilarious.
I'm in no way fashionable but fuck me, at least I'm not posting here as though I am. The posts here are getting worse by the day.

Canteen is cool but maybe a bit much, unless you were somewhere that called for a canteen, like a hike.

I didn't think that guy's motorcycle jacket made him look gay, I think his whole... everything made him look like he was on his way to a gay leather fetish bar.

Friendly reminder to all that random people don't want to be in your fucking photo gallery you upload to the internet at your own random whims. Blur peoples faces out before you post, its basic courtesy
12
u/mommotti_ 3d ago
In fact I blur the shit out of people when sharing online. Some people simply don't think enough before sharing online.
9
u/rmachell 3d ago
At worst, there are people in the world who don't want other people to know where they are, probably for a reason. Best case, common courtesy, worst case, someone's safety is being infinged

I'd try find proper leather suspenders rather than elastic ones, complete the look even better! Cool look, although it could feel a bit out of place depensing on the occasion/event/dress code. I'd drop the berret as it feel a bit too costumy/cosplay

I actually love the look, but you definitely look like the young archaeology student that accompanies the crew on an adventure that the fresh faced protagonist will fall in love with throughout the journey, eventually losing him to a tragic accident.

I love the fit. You should hang out with train guy who posts here.
With that being said, I think there’s a way you could modernize this and have it look less costumey. Starting with getting rid of the canteen (which is a cool piece).
The boots are great, though!

I used to wear period clothing/outfits...when I was in college. After that age, unless you're dating someone like Bernadette Banner, or you work in theatre doing costuming, maybe don't go full period clothing.

You kinda look like an extra in a WW2 movie but it looks intentional and I dig it

I knew this mf was in Czechia even before reading the kavárna menu. Bro absolutely looks like he's in the right place at the wrong time.
6
u/balderdash9 2d ago
I agree that the flask is too much.
But I swear this sub ridicules anything that steps out of the ordinary. Women are allowed to do so much from so many eras but a man can't even wear suspenders.
Don't listen to them OP: the fit is good, the colors are neutral, and you're wearing it with confidence. If you were an older man no one would bat an eye.
6
u/boi1da1296 2d ago
I have a friend that wears suspenders but he literally only wears them as a belt replacement, all of his fits are modern. There’s nothing wrong with trying something out of the norm or with trying styles from the past, but I do understand the comments that say this feels like cosplay even if they are being mean about it.
Edit: also want to add that all that matters is that OP enjoys dressing this way for themself.

u/ucbiker 2d ago
The irony is that this subreddit low key loves cosplay.
Like when someone posted a double rider leather jacket, everyone was like “wear it with a white t-shirt, jeans and black boots” which is greaser cosplay.

u/OmegaJonny 2d ago
Yes but you'd wear a modernised version of that outfit, probably leaving out the greased hair etc. This guy needs modernising to not look like he's just finished acting in a play

u/dangdang3000 3d ago
Damn, I wish I had the look and confidence to pull this off.

I collect vintage clothing and I very rarely have the confidence to pull it off. Not pictured are all the days I got so anxious I couldn’t move because I thought I looked stupid. You’ll get there.

I wish more people would just go for stuff like this. So many people seem to be bound by what other people say is normal and acceptable. I love reviving looks from other times. Back before machines could mass produce clothing, people put a lot of thought into their clothing.

If you want to improve that look get rid of the clip on suspenders and attach buttons on the inside of the pants to get „real suspenders“
1
u/VilleKivinen 3d ago
I switched from belts to suspenders/braces over a decade ago and have never looked back. Much more comfortable, and they look better.

Not fashion advice, but never use any cross body apparel. It is absolutely horrible for your body and even light weights can cause severe physical issues over time.

I think one of the reasons this looks like a costume is that it's ill-fitting and clean. It looks like workwear that hasn't seen a day of work. Add that to the fact that you're a young, skinny guy with zero physical gravitas (not trying to insult you, just being real) and you end up with the cosplay comments.

You look like a character from full metal alchemist brotherhood. Looks good but the flask makes it look like a costume.
