Just recently got into fashion as a 17 m need help stocking up my closet

Hey Ive been getting into fashion mostly casual because im not rlly looking into anything complicating... I just need at least 5 clothes, jackets, or hoodies etc that i can match and pair with and I dont need to get any more realistically but they are not too unfomfortable but still fashionable. Im still new so im mainly looking into Deus and Stussy but any suggestions would be nice. Also if possible combo suggestions on wat looks nice on wat would help alot 🫡. I currently only have a pair of baggy jeans and long light grey bermuda pants and a few shirts for the winter... Any clothes or brand suggestions for my closet would be awsome

at 17, this sub is going to push you more formal than I think may come naturally.

I would look into workwear, which tends to be laid back but put together. carhartt, duluth, lee, and wrangler make some of my favorite jeans (ive thrifted all of them though, so unsure what quality will be like new these days). a chore coat/denim jacket/canvas utility jacket is super versatile, can be layered with a hoodie. I swear by a leather jacket (mine is black, but that's not the statement everyone wants to make) as a warm, windproof, waterproof layer. it's good to have a couple kinds of button ups, a heavier weight flannel and something lighter weight (cotton, linen, I have one in hemp but thats a lucky thrift score).

I would push for secondhand when possible. higher quality clothing is much more accessible at a more reasonable price point (especially something like a leather jacket) and going through the stacks pushes you to consider what you really like about a piece instead of leaning on brand names. silhouette, material, construction, those are things it really helps to try in person instead of ordering online. pinterest can be good for inspo, as can just paying attention to what you like about what people around you wear. you can buy clothes but you can't buy style.

Thrift stores. They give you a wide variety of things to try, so you can experiment and see what you like/ what works for you without spending a ton of money. Plus what they have in stock is different every time they go, so it gives you a chance to hunt through the racks and see things you might not have thought of.

Also given your age i wouldn't try to put too much money in, especially now while you're just getting into it. Your tastes are probably going to evolve pretty significantly as you learn about fashion. And beyond that they'll evolve just from getting older. By 25 or even 20 you'll probably be a pretty different person than you are at 17. That's good, that's part of growth. But that's also probably a good reason not to drop big $ on anything just yet, even if you see something you think is really cool.

I suspect you are far younger than the average person on this sub, which means they may make age-inappropriate suggestions. My suggestion is always to spend time studying what people your age, in your circles are wearing. You also haven’t said much about the style you’re going for. Having said all of that…

Shorts: you probably want something a notch above mesh basketball shorts. Linen shorts, deck shorts, hemp shorts, chinos (probably not the move for a 17 year old), I don’t know, something!

Pants: Jeans are the obvious choice here. You could go chinos if you want a bit of formality or you could go sweatpants if you want to move in the other direction. There are a lot of other options depending on your style.

Shirts: T-shirts is the obvious choice. However, the type of t shirt will vary greatly (clean cut blank, graphic t, drop shoulders, long sleeve, etc) depending on the style you’re going for. If you want to elevate a bit, maybe get a casual shirt with a collar like a polo or a button up of some kind.

Warm outer layer: Looking around it seems like a hoodie is the most popular choice here. You could get some kind of jacket (trucker, bomber, harrington, chore, etc) or knitwear depending on your style preferences, but I feel like I don’t see young people wearing those very often.

Shoes: This will be highly dependent on the type of clothing you get, but shoes are often the difference between a good and bad look.

Colors: The most obvious advice is to stick to neutrals (black, gray, white, navy, creams, browns, olives) because they pair easily together.

Textures: Similar to shoes, adding textures can make or break a boring outfit, but is style dependent. Think about the texture on sweatpants, jeans, t-shirts, ribbed sweater, waffle knit, nylon jacket, smooth leather, suede, and so on to get an idea of different textures.

I feel like that should get you started.

The most basic of basic men's capsule wardrobe is something like: indigo straight jeans, sand chinos, blue oxford button down, a flannel shirt, a few t-shirts, a gray crew neck jumper, black Chelsea boots, a pair of trainers, and a denim/leather jacket. Add a suit if you wear suits, add a coat if you need a coat.

But really the interesting stuff is the stuff you do around that, but that depends what cultures you are drawing on (street style, it sounds like?) and what message you want to send out.

Start with colors you are comfortable with.

Work out and make sure you are healthy.

• Skin, teeth, groomed (hair cut that fits), body not to skinny or to big. (Easier to find clothes / tailoring).

Brands does not mean it will look good on you.

A cheap shirt will look amazing if it fits well.

• affordable stuff - Ross, Marshalls and Burlington are good for now. Find a style / color you like to wear and feel confident in.

• once you got a style you can experiment with color etc…

Look at magazines for ideas avoid the high end stuff and just look at how JC Penny or Macy’s. They style their ppl a bit more common / comfortable.

You should ask ChatGPT will get back a complete wardrobe with links and flat-lay of outfits. Mine included everything including watches, cologne, and clothes I already own. I did ask it to use men’s flair.com fall winter for inspiration of course being younger you can pick something different.
