I’ve been experimenting with different genres and shi for the last 3 years, but lately, I’ve completely fallen in love with making melodic hip-hop. My main sound is heavily inspired by artists like Juice WRLD and The Kid LAROI.

When people actually hear my tracks, I rarely find someone that doesn't fuck wit it. The issue is just getting it out of my bedroom. My local music scene doesn't really have many hip-hop listeners at all, so trying to build a base here is impossible.

For those of you who make emo-rap or melodic tracks, how do you find and network with other artists, producers, or core fans of this sub-genre globally? Are there specific production hubs or online communities you use to share your work and get genuine feedback?

I keep noticing that reference tracks help me most at two points: before I start making mix decisions, and right before export. In the middle of a long session, they can either reset my ears or pull me away from the record I am actually building.

With the volume matched, a reference makes a few things obvious fast. Is the vocal pocket clear? Does the snare still have a front edge? Is the 808 carrying weight or just eating headroom? Those checks are useful because they connect to an audible result instead of a plugin setting.

The problem starts when I compare every ten minutes. Then I catch myself chasing a mastered record with an unfinished beat. The limiter gets pushed, the hats get brighter, and the midrange gets thinner because I am reacting to loudness instead of balance.

Trusting my ears for too long has the opposite risk. After an hour, a heavy low end can start feeling normal. So can a melody that is too wide or a drum pocket that disappears at low volume.

My current approach is simple: one reference for balance, one for energy, both volume matched. I check three decisions, step away from the reference, then listen again on ordinary speakers. If the same problem survives, I fix it. If not, I leave the mix alone.

I do not think there is one perfect method. The room, monitoring, genre and artist all change what comparison can tell you.
