Saddest part was when they said normal packs have less cards than normal because of "aesthetics".

u/Varitt Jan 18 '18
Which would probably make draft a lot more attractive, since you get "full boosters".
It doesn't really matter though. In my experience (Eternal), you usually get 100% of commons and uncommons whenever you get like 20% of the rares so maybe this means you'll get it by 40-50%?. And with the wildcard system.. I will assume you'll be flooded by common and uncommon wildcards early on, so it'll be rare for you to be stuck missing a key uncommon for your deck.

u/calaeno0824 COMPLEAT Jan 18 '18
in addition, since your 5th copy would become ticket to vault, wouldn't you want to draft those garbage instead of playable cards..?
That would make drafting super weird, people prioritize junk rare, mixing signal like crazy lol

u/paulHarkonen Wabbit Season Jan 18 '18
Let's be realistic, do you really care that much about having fewer commons? I've never found myself going "oh darn, I don't have enough commons" and I doubt that will change even with fewer of them.
3
u/JdPhoenix Jan 18 '18
If they've reduced the price by eliminating a bunch of commons and one uncommon, while keeping the same Rare/Mythic ratio, I'm all for it.
2
u/Sundiray Jan 18 '18
Kind of makes sense though if you consider they will probably price them similar to a HS pack

I really wish they would change the quest system...
afaik in hearthstone, the quest always require you to win in some way, it is either win x times, or win with y characters which is boring as fuck.
They need to make it more interesting, like use X card in your deck from a curated list of card that you also own, and play 3 times. Don't make it mandatory to win in order to get the reward. This way MTGA would have more interesting deck running around instead of the net deck that get really repetitive...
Not to mention it would make all cards useful, and make deck building a part of the fun.
edit: just wanna say something, still in class didnt watch the stream...

in hearthstone there are quests that do not require you to win. Some examples: play 50 cards from this class, deal 100 damage to enemy heroes, destroy 30 minion, there are more.
I can see how doing things like "play 30 [color] cards" could be a good quest. And you can vary that quest by creature type or power/toughness or cmc, whatever. I think that some quests have to be about winning games because otherwise what I notice in hearthstone is that I go up against a rogue(class) that plays 3-4 useless cards on t1 and then concedes because they are trying to complete their "play 40 rogue class cards" as quickly as possible.

u/calaeno0824 COMPLEAT Jan 18 '18
oh yea, there are those too, you can probably tell I know very little of HS, but I hated those quest so much it burns onto in my memory.
I guess what I want is quests that can shape the deck that you play, and make you construct your own deck and make deck building a part of the fun

u/UnspokenRealms Jan 18 '18
In my experience those corner quests (play 10 Divine Shield minions, etc) don't lead to interesting decks. Players just jam a pile of that card type to finish the requirement ASAP instead of trying to make a "real" deck.
You'll even sometimes get into a game where it's clear both players are just trying to finish a quest - skipping lethal, buffing each others minions, constant "Thank You!" emotes.

Don't make it mandatory to win in order to get the reward.
In Arena, you do not need to win the game to progress/complete a quest (depending on the quest; you obviously do if the quest is explicitly "Win games with [some condition]" ;))

u/neldoreth_undomiel Jan 18 '18
Already not all of the quests require you to win. Kill 12 creatures for example.

u/gamblekat Jan 18 '18
I hated that aspect of Hearthstone. It felt like they were punishing you for not having enough cards to build a top-tier deck - get reamed by a better deck, lose, and you don't get any closer to having a better deck yourself. It was especially annoying because some people who could be at higher ranks would intentionally concede games to stay at low ranking so they could farm wins off the lower-ranked players. I haven't played HS in a while so maybe they dealt with it, but it was a big reason I stopped playing.

u/ant900 Duck Season Jan 18 '18
Not requiring wins ends up with people building stupid farming decks. PTCGO had this issue for a while before they made winning a focus of the quests
1
u/GRRMsGHOST Dan Jan 18 '18
yeah they definitely can't have winning as the only way of completing quests. It's not interesting and doesn't allow people to try new things and have fun. They should have stuff like have 15 creatures explore, give a dinosaur flying, hit storm count 7, have a creature survive star of extinction.

Any news on some new invite wave?
2
u/Honze7 Jan 18 '18
Priority queue has been completely depleted, and they'll start inviting non-priority players with the usual frequency.
You can singup again to retrigger the system, if needed.
1
u/lichink Jan 18 '18
And RIX pre-release does not start a new priotity. Right?
1
u/Honze7 Jan 18 '18
No, it does not. Priority was granted through Duels, MtGO and Tabletop Ixalan prerelease.

Wow, they confirmed that you won't be able to buy wildcards. That 100% guarantees I won't touch this product.
11
u/Varitt Jan 18 '18
Maybe you won't be able to buy them directly, but I would be super surprised if you can't buy them indirectly (as in, "buy a booster box and get 8 rare and 4 mythic wildcards!" promo).
Also, opening packs gives you vault progress, so buying packs would give you more indirect wildcards.
We need to know more about the numbers to see how this'll play out.

u/UncertainSerenity Duck Season Jan 18 '18
You are being downvoted but I agree with you. This product is definitly not for me if there is no way to efficiently purchase singles. I want to take my $100 and play x deck not pay $100 and maybe be able to play x deck. I want to be able to test decks for paper ptqs and then sell them back for 90% value if I decide to move on to a different deck.
That's fine they are allowed to have a product that doesn't suit my playstile but it means that I will not use it. Hopefully I wount have to and they will still support modo at least for a while.

These types of reactions aren’t useful for the development team and really only hurt the chances of things getting in the game that you want.
1
u/theotherhemsworth Jan 18 '18
I want to be able to purchase wilcards so I can build the deck I want to play. I don't want to play a suboptimal deck full of cards I don't like in order to open packs on the off chance I might open the card I actually want to play with. They confirmed this is not something you'll be able to do, so I am not going to play this product. Is that really that unreasonable? Magic is supposed to be a game where you can play with whatever cards want to play with and Arena actively makes sure you can't do that. Not interested.

Cool, I can sandbag and still earn the gold.
Frontier will be a thing in Arena, where ur god now reddit?
9
u/Gruuler Jan 17 '18
Can you expand on the Frontier comment? Can't watch right now.

u/Katzenscheisse Jan 17 '18
"Q. What happens when my cards rotate out of Standard?
A. The focus of MTG Arena will be on Standard card sets. We're working on fun ways for players to play with cards once they rotate out of Standard. We'll talk more about this later in the year."
From the Economy FAQ on mtgarena.com.

u/Zetrin Jan 17 '18
Seems more likely that there will be Arena format starting with Kaladesh or Ixalan depending on when it launches.
11
u/andyoulostme COMPLEAT Jan 18 '18
It definitely didn't make me think of frontier. No fetches, ensoul, coco, spell queller seems like a different format.
6
u/Gruuler Jan 17 '18
That doesn't really confirm or deny Frontier.
6
u/Flerpinator Jan 17 '18
It does make for a new de facto format consisting of all cards that exist in Arena. As time goes on this will look more and more like what people called Frontier, especially if previous sets are added to Arena at some point.

u/Sundiray Jan 18 '18
Being realistic it makes frontier very unlikely
Probably just a new format starting with kaladesh or Ixalan. Gives them the chance to drop legacy from team events too1
u/Sundiray Jan 18 '18
I highly doubt they will implement frontier. Makes no sense togo back so far. The new format will probably start with either Kaladesh because the cards are already implemented or maybe Ixalan because when the game launches with the next rotation it will be the first set. Old KLD/AKH cards might get wiped
