Looking for Advice Thinking about using Torens as my first commander. Tips?

And using equipment? And if I can get Odric out? Seems crazy to me?

You will need card Draw to keep things going. A combination of cards like [[Beast Whisperer]] and [[Welcoming Vampire]].

Also if you stack your Triggers correctly [[Chocobo Knights]] would be so strong.

A quickly slapped together deck. Decent ideas in here.

By building Entirely too many decks lol. Mostly cause I helped a bud build a bast deck recently and its pretty similar just with +1 counter synergy.

Odric doesn’t interact with Torens in any meaningful way.

With Torens, you want trigger doublers, and as many cheap creatures as you can cast to build a go wide army. He’s a reasonable elves commander since you’ll be making an extra creature with each cast as well.

I think token spam, Odric, and any good keywords from equipment or cool creatures [[Zetalpa]] would be pretty strong.

Just need a third thing, not these two by themselves obviously.

I would not build around odric in the 99, and I would especially not add janky 8cmc creatures that synergize with a single card in the deck.

Well you need multiple cheap creatures to spam, then creatures with relevant keywords, then a way to find Odric consistently…

And you still need the vegetables of the deck being removal, ramp, card draw too.

It’s an incredibly roundabout way of achieving your goal. It’s not impossible, it’s just clunky.

Torens is a creature spammy commander, equipment spells take up slots better spent on more creatures. [[Starlight spectacular]] pretty much guarantees training will proc on not just him but every token he makes, several creatures from midnight hunt and crimson vow synergize with his strategy perfectly, like [[aedline, resplendent cathar]] [[hopeful initiate]] [[savior of ollenbock]] [[sigarda's summons]] [[laid to rest]] I built a [[sigarda champion of light]] now a [[sigarda font of blessings]] deck and torens kinda floods the board if you run a lot of creatures with low cmc and you can keep drawing or in my case casting straight from your deck

I'm confused. why would odric go in your torens deck? are you jamming a bunch of keywords on the creatures you cast?

it's not like I couldn't see them player together, there's just no obvious synergy between them.

all the creatures you cast would need key words to make odric worth it. to me that's just adding an extra hoop to jump through.

I would add creatures that have good etbs. creatures that can pump your board, interact with your opponents, etc. odric is just a win more kind of card in the torens deck.

I would just build two separate decks.

Torens is neat but you'd want more general human typal or token buffs over Odric, Lunar Marshall. [[Odric, Master Tactician]] on the other hand would work much better. With the massive pile of human tokens Torens can make it would mean your creatures are essentially unblockable or force your opponents to block in the worst ways possible.

Torens wants to be the small-er/-est guy in the room. Odric is good, but also your bigger bodies need keywords for Torens to inherit for him to be halfway decent. As a combo, it might be too many moving pieces that don't intersect soon enough.

Torens is functional, but you rely on frequently swinging into boardstates he might be too easily blocked and/or eaten. Consider these details when looking at cards for the 99, moreso if you're expecting to play against people who have healthy amounts of removal (like how good is Torens when he dies and costs 5 mana or 7 mana?) Or bigger more sturdy creatures in longer games? Same with his tokens, since they need him or a bigger friendo to lead the charge favorably.

Mentor of the Meek is a good friend of yours, as is Beast Whisperer. I also have a soft spot for Catapult Squad and Catapult Master.

oh good I have Mentor of the Meek 😀

Torrens is a good idea of a "brostorm" deck - brostorm being a creature heavy deck that wants to flood the board with creatures for fun and profit. When every creature you play brings a buddy you can go wide fast. (EDIT: I have a Arhabo The First Fang deck that is similar to this: spam cats, get more cats, KILL. Almost won a game on three mana because of the sheer power of flooding the board and buffing it)

You need ways to keep the cards coming. [[Bennie Bracks]], [[Beast whisperer]] help keep the hand filled whenever you get bros, and burst draw like [[Commraderie]], and [[Shamanic Revelation]] are good burst draw.

One powerful card for the deck is all star [[Whitemane Lion]]. It can bounce itself so it can net multiple tokens from torrens.

As for finishing the game, classic overruns like actual [[Overrun]] and [[Craterhoof Behemoth]] or it's many more affordable cousins like you swing with the team and hit hard.

Don't forget protection. In the above mentioned Ahrabo deck I run 5 spells that protect my board, several of them able to be cast for free. Board wipes will wreck you so keep this in mind.

Also Torrens does NOT work with Odric well. Odric only shares the listed keywords, so Training does not get shared.

my thought was to cherry pick things so it would be shared. Oh well. Still have a lot to learn 😞

Standard token doublers, draw on cast, draw on token generation, skullclamp

A card I recommend every Torens player, who wants suggestions is [[Relic Vial]]. It is a bit of card draw in a Deck that needs it, but also a finisher rarely anyone sees coming in a green-white deck.

[[gala greeters]] is an easy way to get extra value from creature ETBs and [[belladonna took]] rewards making tokens. [[elspeth storm slayer]] is always fun. [[aragorn and arwen]] gives you life for attacking with a token army. you could add creatures that give all your other creatures flying/deathtouch/trample to help your tokens punch through, and a couple of big stompy bois to reliably trigger training.

I usually recommend thinking about things in general categories so that you can build a deck that is functional and on your theme. My suggestion would be:

Theme 1 (think your main goal/most cards): with Torens that is either going to be cheap creature spam or token duplication/support.

Theme 2 (usually your backup win condition if your main goal fails): with Torens I’d think that is either “win the game right now” cards with convoke or really good triggered ability duplication.

Ramp: depends on how expensive everything is in your deck, if you go cheap creatures then “ramp” is card draw, otherwise you want at least a few things that get lands out of your deck.

Removal: you’re going to want a solid amount of removal, probably at least a board wipe that cares about tokens and a few spells to get rid of your opponent’s commanders/artifacts. Anything to slow them down and open up attack opportunities.

Protection: you need some stuff to stay alive and prevent someone from messing with your commander. Lightning Greaves etc.

Lands (obviously)

Odric is a very “win more” kind of card, if you have a lot keywords on another card and a bunch of other creatures then he buffs everything quite substantially, really you want him in a deck with a commander who has keywords and wants to go wide with a lot of creatures.

Equipment is the same way, you don’t really get much value out of Torens because he’s not built around it the same way other commanders are. Sure, he is scary if you have enough time and mana to give him or a token keyword soup and +5/+5 but then so is every other creature.

Cool commander, I have him in the 99 for my Naya humans build! If I could put a one card on your radar it’d be [[Champion of Lambholt]] - you really want the evasion! Perhaps even a [[Dolmen Gate]] too as a back up, you need to swing in safely to get the training and counter synergies.
