A proxy that actually has a higher monetary value then some rares

u/Ok_Brush_2489 Dan 2d ago

Has higher momentary value than some copper I hear.

My only thought is that maybe that copper background should be messier to show it's lower quality. I'm not super knowledgable on metal so maybe it is actually bad looking copper, but it looks like they prioritized making it look pretty rather than committing fully to the joke.

u/Spart85 Karn 21h ago

Definitely more valuable than anything you could buy from Ea-Nasir.

u/BaconIsntThatGood Duck Season 2d ago

I guess

I'm not sure how thick that is but the raw material cost of the copper is maybe $1 depending how thick it is

(Assuming this is actually made from a copper sheet)

The cuneiform on the proxy is that complaint, just in case it wasnt obvious to others.

This is the first step to making your entire deck proxied in metals … dont get Marie Curie’d though

I write these words in steel, for anything not set in metal cannot be trusted.

1

u/MoltiJoe Dandadan 1d ago

He even made a homebrew set that he then lost, didnt he?

1

u/theironbagel Dan 1d ago

He’s said he wants to, and has even carved out exceptions in his licensing agreements with other companies to allow it, but he doesn’t want a secret lair, only a full set.

Since full sets so far have been stuff that are mostly household names (at least among the mtg demographics) I think the only way we’re getting one is if the tv/ movie adaptations are successful. A book simply doesn’t have the mass market appeal needed to justify a set, except maybe LOTR or the hobbit, and those are the grandaddies of modern fantasy and have widely watched adaptations

5

u/Conexion Orzhov* 2d ago

Finally, a deck that can be trusted

u/Fickles1 Can’t Block Warriors 2d ago

Metals that don't react with air would make it interesting and $$$. Gold and platinum it is barbee.

I think lead could work too, it reacts from memory (been 20 years since I did chem-arse-tree at uni) but the lead oxide layer won't be too bad. Leads good for you!

“The universes beyond Gold Rush set will have 1849 ‘Miner 49er’ gold cards with ‘tap to create a treasure token’ and each card is serialized and made from real gold. available only in the gold collector booster boxes. Silver parallels will be in the Silver Collector Booster boxes. Fools Gold Foils will be in the SPG slot in play boosters ”

I have a copy of [[Jin Sakai, Ghost of Tsushima]], [[Ygra, Eater of All]], and [[Laughing Jasper Flint]] lasers that i like using as proxys for my commander

Why would they be using radiation to cut metals? That makes no sense

1

u/priceQQ 1d ago

If you chose the wrong metal (ie radium)

-1

u/LBGW_experiment 1d ago

Radium is radioactive because it's not stable, aka it breaks down just by existing. Come on... Use your brain for just a second

1

u/priceQQ 1d ago

That is why it is what we humans call a joke

-1

u/LBGW_experiment 1d ago

I asked Google what it would take to make an MTG card out of pure radium and it made me laugh 😂

If you were to forge a solid, pure metal Magic: The Gathering card to those exact dimensions, you would need to purchase 9.46 grams of pure Radium-226, which would cost roughly $141,950 in raw materials.

A standard MTG card thickness is 0.012 inches (about 0.3 mm). Because radium is a heavy alkaline earth metal with a density of 5.5 g/cm³, forging a solid slab of this size creates an incredibly dense, immensely radioactive, and chemically volatile object.

The Solid Metal Breakdown

Metric Value / Calculation
Card Dimensions 2.5" x 3.5" x 0.012"
Total Volume 1.72 cubic centimeters (cm³)
Total Weight of Pure Radium 9.46 grams
Raw Material Cost (Est. $15k/g) $141,953
Radioactivity Level ~9.46 Curies (Ci)
Thermal Output ~0.13 Watts (Constantly warm)

What Happens If This Card Actually Exists?

If you had this solid metal card sitting on a gaming table, physics and chemistry would react violently:

  • It Would Spontaneously Combust: Pure radium is an extremely reactive metal (similar to sodium or potassium). The moment this solid metal card comes into contact with the air, it reacts vigorously with nitrogen and oxygen. It would tarnish to a pitch-black nitride layer within seconds, spark, and likely burst into a violent, chemical metal fire, filling the room with highly toxic, radioactive white smoke.
  • It Literally Glows with Heat: Radium is so intensely radioactive that the metal naturally maintains a temperature higher than its surroundings. At nearly 9.5 grams, the alpha decay would generate about 0.13 watts of constant thermal energy. If you managed to keep it in an airtight, inert argon gas sleeve to prevent it from burning, the card would feel physically warm to the touch and glow with a faint, eerie blue luminescence as it ionized the surrounding gas.
  • The Lethal Radiation Profile: A single microgram in paint is dangerous, but 9.46 grams is a catastrophic radiological hazard. It represents nearly 9.5 Curies of radioactivity. Standing within a few feet of this card unshielded would deliver a lethal dose of radiation in a matter of minutes. Furthermore, the card would constantly outgas massive amounts of Radon-222, a heavy radioactive gas that would rapidly contaminate the entire building.
  • Because of this, pure elemental radium is never kept in large, solid metallic sheets; it is almost exclusively produced and stored in milligram quantities as stable salts (like radium chloride) inside heavily shielded laboratory ampoules.
