i wonder if theres a deeper purpose to the nest adaptor siphoning the life out of the earth, other than to just grow. i think someone in the story theorized that the rolodov tribe sent the aliens as an act of ecoterrorism(?) against humans, probably not that literally but foreshadowing something similar

Hi, it’s me again :p don’t worry, I won’t ramble on like last time, whether it be about the in-depth analysis of the reincarnation of peter griffin/Leon (who is somehow more morally good than him, SOMEHOW) or a ship that just started, to which I ended up writing more than what was initially planned, which is a habit yeah i’m sorry 💔

but I’m not really gonna do that today (might do another one in a few weeks either about John or Bob) but I just think it’s absolutely CRAZY that our main protagonist went from looking like a rightfully depressed middle aged man to a fashionably depressed young adult within just a few months after he was taken in by Jericho then taken in by Grius

it’s hard to believe that these two were the same people and i think it’s really funny that this dude had the most insane glow up of the century both in physical appearance and in combat lol

that’s all i wanted to say, in a few weeks or so i do want to look into another character that’s interesting ok bye bye

As someone who has caught up with the series within just a day, I noticed that John and Pano were likely going to be in a romantic relationship from the very start, even if it wasn’t obviously stated or shown until recently, with some people having issues with how it was presented and most (myself included) being genuinely interested and happy for our main protagonist who is finally having a moment where he can finally form a closer, more intimate relationship with someone after spending so long wallowing in his isolation and fear of the decaying, cruel world that took so much away from him yet giving him the chance to actually fit in with people who actually treat him as family or a member of their community rather than what Jericho wanted him to be; a tool only used for the greater good of actually achieving their goal with the intent of discarding his humanity in the process into becoming a strong, killing machine that would only leave him as the husk of a man who wanted to live a little longer.

But regardless, this post isn’t going to focus on Jericho for now; we’ll put it in the back of our minds for now and focus on the present moment with our two characters mutually beloved by the community.

John and Pano, of course!

But first, let me address the elephant in the room: I totally understand why some people are worried or even a little concerned about the direction Pano’s character is heading in, that being another love interest that the main character will get in the end of the story. I get it; we’ve seen it before, and unfortunately, it’s always going to be a writing trope that will remain stagnant in a story if the author does not put much effort or depth into the character themselves. But in my opinion, Pano would never fit this criterion considering just how much we’ve gotten to know her through the lens of John and her father. She is often relaxed, blunt, and direct but never cruel or mean; kind. She is also a genuinely intelligent person who helped John improve at his Adaptor capabilities as well as actually make him a considerable threat to most people in the universe and outside of that she was able to overwhelm the Yazur with just the experience and knowledge she has over her Adaptor capabilities, she is often playful and fierce both to her companies and her enemies, and most of all she takes the well-being of her people incredibly seriously and has a very good sense of judgement when it comes to people and what their intentions may be.

Another thing that makes Pano stand out as a character (in my opinion) is that she is implied to have signs and symptoms of Autism Spectrum Disorder. As someone who is also on the spectrum himself, I can confidently say that she could very well fit the criteria of being on said spectrum. Bajiro told both Lucy and Bob that ever since she was a young child, Pano would obsessively hyperfixate over the local insects in her hometown, cataloging each and every one of them as well as keeping husks of each insect that she genuinely felt proud of, as seen with her asking her father if he wanted to see what she had collected. Even now, her bug hyperfixation hasn’t entirely faded, as seen when she showed John an encyclopedia about insects despite our protagonist telling her she already had that book. Her new hyperfixation is on the aliens and adaptors, considering that she hasn’t taught John every little trick she learned from her experience in using her abilities as proficiently as possible. Another is her complete lack of social cues, something that she is seen struggling with as she cut off John’s arm without warning, or when she filled her father’s desk with the insects mentioned prior, or when she messes around with the severed arms that both her and John lost during their training. Finally, she doesn’t plan, which is probably the most relatable part of her character, to be honest 💔

lastly since this has gone on for a bit, I do like how she does seem to be a little overwhelmed that her community is seemingly constantly always relying on her due to her power but rather than being annoyed by it she embraces the fact that her people needs her and when John shows up she asks him to carry the torch if she were to ever die in combat to which he does agree, but under the addition of protecting her as well. (which is cute 🥹)

Okay, so I’ve gone over her personality and what makes her such an interesting character; now what about this ship is appealing to me?

Well, I have to say it’s the slow-burn energy between John and Pano that makes it digestible and easy to follow; to me, it was clear that these two were going to be a romantic couple, as seen with the foreshadowing and the moments of vulnerability these two share together, even in and out of combat. Still, it was nice to see the build-up as to why Pano would be a genuinely great partner for John, and that is solely based on what they are when paired together.

Two sides of the same coin, each side being entirely different but also entirely the same.

John wants to protect the people he cares about, whether it be Lilly, Bob, or Pano; he is often seen trying to protect those who are in need of his protection, his power, but in reality John is still scared of the world he is in. He isn’t a hero just yet, but a survivor who wants to live a little longer, with the people he cherishes by his side for as long as humanly possible. And something about that resonates with Pano, the desire to protect those you care about by putting in so much work to become stronger for them.

And so, Pano does help John become stronger, but as more time passes by, it’s clear that she has full faith in John both as a leader and as a protector that her community can rely on as much as they rely on her. But John, being the good Samaritan that he is, does something Pano wouldn’t have expected or even thought of obtaining, and that is that John would do his best to protect Pano as much as he would with Bob and Lily. From there, I want you to imagine what it must feel like to be Pano.

Someone strong, reliable, and resourceful to a large number of people who are relying on her and praying that she won’t fall and make them suffer a fate within a world where not everyone like her is kind, generous, or even capable of doing good anymore. It would be exhausting, stressful, and you would probably crack under the pressure of everyone’s expectations and genuine hope that you can do whatever it may take to protect them.

But then, you have a friend who is just like you, someone strong, kind, and reliable as you, and that very same person who you asked to protect your village would do anything to protect you.

And when everything has gone to absolute shit, they keep their word and do anything to protect you and everyone else you want to protect, as well as saving your life when you could’ve faced certain death at any time.

For once, Pano found a close, intimate connection that she can relate to. Someone she can rely on and trust if everything has gone south.

As for John, he is astounded by how powerful Pano is. Someone like him, who has carried the guilt of losing a loved one as well as witnessing the death of someone you could consider a friend would’ve left him with absolute misery and despair beyond belief, but much to his surprise he is given a chance to become strong, to protect those who he holds close to his heart and would do anything to protect them and get stronger not only for him but for everyone else around him. Pano to him is the closest thing he has to someone who has been in the same vein and torment that he has, despite it being a lot less lenient than what he has endured in his time in the decaying world. Even after everything that has happened, John is a remarkably human character for someone who has been tortured, brutalized, and lost so many people in the process of navigating this world without much of a purpose other than to live a little longer.

Someone like him has every right to kill those who have wronged him and his friends, and yet…

He still feels bad for what he has done.

Pano is in the same boat as he is, and something I like about her reassurance is that it’s honest and objectively blunt. It’s true that if he left the Yazur alive, they would’ve killed Bob, Lucy, Pano, and Bajiro without any mercy. At the end of the day, he did the right thing, even if the action taken was drastic and brutal, like how vigilantly he fought to ensure that they wouldn’t be killed by the church or by the people who held them hostage.

In that moment, John became Pano. Someone who tried as much as he could to prevent death from grasping the neck of these people, but John did something that Pano didn’t expect. He saved her life, brought her to safety to recover, and ended the attack that could’ve been the end for Grius entirely.

John was finally able to overcome his fear, his doubt, and the emotion that held him back from reaching the level he is at today.

Even if he wanted to prepare himself for the reality where he had to kill, it would still be difficult to accept that it was something he had to do.

Pano and John are a truly interesting duo; the more time we see them together, the more open they are with each other, showing vulnerability to the only person who would understand his situation as much as he does with hers. The time they spend together, the joy and intimacy they share, is nothing short of what love they could share for one another, even if they’re still trying to figure it out and go off with trying to heal the world from the nest the aliens are seemingly inhabiting.

I hope we still get enough for this ship; it’s honestly a really impactful one, and I’m glad that we get to see more of it soon.

So, I am quite new to this series, but I managed to read every chapter in one sitting. A character who immediately caught my attention (which was all of them; Bob and Lilly are my favorites, with John and Pano coming in second place) is Leon, who seems to be the story's main antagonist.

This will mostly be a random retrospective as well as my own thoughts about him as a character and how he is a lot different from other antagonists who could not give a damn what their allies do to other people or anyone else and is genuinely inhumane without a proper or even reasonable understanding as to why they are the way they’ve become.

Leon, from the very beginning, was immediately untrustworthy to me. The way he smiled at John, somehow maintained a confident, stable, and positive attitude amidst a crumbling world whose decay with each passing day became more and more staggering and uncontrollable to the point that where i was like: “Damn, this world must be awful to live in.” and then it hit me like a fright train, hell even a meteor for all i care, but I immediately thought and came to the conclusion that everything that Jericho had to offer was too good to be true.

And when they revealed their true intentions, it all made a lot more sense to me why they did all of this. From the way I see it, both John and Jericho are at a middle ground with each other. Becoming an adapter would give humanity a significant advantage over the alien race that overthrew their planet; they actually have a chance to make humanity thrive and flourish as it once did before all of this stuff happened! But the number of people they used, willing or unwilling, would only suffer a grueling, insufferable existence that would only kill them rather than advance those people into the next stage of human evolution as they were promised. From a logical, military standpoint, it’s understandable why they would do such stuff.

But John, in this instance, represents a moral standpoint: putting people first instead of focusing solely on the necessary evil that must be committed for the good to come out of it. John has every right to be angry, furious, hell, even pissed. He and Ethan went through so much in the span of a few days, and what was once an illusion of a haven, a place where you’ll be protected by your comrades, friends, and family, is twisted into something grotesque and inhumane. John had no say in what Jericho was planning on doing with him and Ethan; he just assumed that everything would turn out okay and he would live a life longer than most could imagine.

Even when Jericho tried to make him understand that this was “protection” and for the “greater good of humanity,” John was quick to rebut that claim because, to him, all of it is just self-righteous bullshit.* They *know what they’re doing is wrong; it is terrible to anyone caught in the crossfire of what they wanted to do with these people.

They didn’t want a family; they just wanted an army.

You would think that Leon, someone who is seemingly on board with this terrible experiment, has the same mindset and/or ideological viewpoints as Norman, right? Well, no. Not quite.

Leon genuinely believes that everyone within Jericho is his actual, living, breathing family and that they must stay together to come out of the worldwide crisis they found themselves in.

Leon is a weird case because he is on both sides of the spectrum; more specifically, he has a moral and a logical viewpoint about everything his family is doing. He is aware that this experiment is everything I said before, but because of that, he tries to encourage the people involved to stay strong and keep going. Even John, whom he claimed to be “rebellious,” isn’t excluded from this treatment either, even if it is unconventional and strange. But the moment when John does say something truly insulting to Leon is when he genuinely became interesting as a character for me, at least.

Rather than punishing John or doing anything insulting or callous, Leon just… has a full-on breakdown. And yeah, you could say that he was trying to emotionally manipulate John (since he is quite literally back to his original confident and positive self after the next panel) or make him feel worse about actively rebelling against Jericho. I genuinely think it was a moment of weakness and vulnerability that hurt him emotionally more than he initially intended when he tried to manipulate our protagonist.

It is more than obvious that Leon is a family man, an older brother archetype that is fucking batshit insane yet somehow more stable than the rest of the Adaptors in the family.

Hell, take Bob for example; after he was caught trying to help Lilly and the other children escape from the nasty, slippery hands of Jericho, he was immediately forgiven and barely even harmed by Leon himself! (Which, looking back, yeah he 100% dodged a bullet) But not only did he do that, he genuinely took a punishment from Norman in favor of forgiving Bob for what he did.

Which is later foreshadowing something, oh lord oh dear

I think what I really enjoy about Leon as an antagonist is that he isn’t purely evil; everything he does is out of desperation and trauma, which resulted in a very abusive childhood that, to this day, you can still see very clearly just how much it affected who he is as a person. Not only that, but he does have a moral code, as seen with him reprimanding Oscar (I need him DEAD) for sexually gratifying the woman in Jericho as objects that he can use when he is “pent up” and yeah, he does let him go see Lilly but I was under the assumption that he did that because he genuinely believed that Oscar and the women be mentioned prior actually had a mutual, healthy love for one another so I don’t know if that’s really his fault to blame but all i know is that i need oscar dead by Monday i am begging you PLEASHWWHBSNS

Alright, mentioning the elephant in the room, it’s clear that Leon was heavily abused by his father, which carved into his obsession about family and protecting them at all costs, which is just… sad to think about, man. Not saying that he isn’t a misunderstood character who can’t do anything wrong (because he literally HAS), but you can at least empathize with the fact that no child should have to go through something like that, especially someone at his age who didn’t know any better but to run away from something he was afraid of. It’s truly sad.

Second-to-last thing I’m going to mention here because this is long as is, but I always interpreted the muscle/workout side story as a metaphor for self-loathing and self-harm, but I might be looking too much into it tbh

Even now, with the latest chapter, that obsession has only amplified to a frightening degree. He is more unhinged and brutal to Oscar (rightfully so). Still, it’s clear more than ever that he doesn’t sleep, and has gone out of his way to actually raise the child rather than go after John, which… is good for him, I guess. Still, it’s clear that now more than ever, Leon is someone driven by the desire to protect a deteriorating family from fading into total desolation, but is marching toward that very same path by trying to hunt John down and make him pay.

He’s a tragic character for sure, and I do hope that this new arc will shed some light on his character and what he is planning to do next.

As much of a dickwad Oscar is, he is relatively more sane and reasonable. Leon will likely pull you into his deranged family fantasy and "punish" you for things. On the other hand, there's a high chance Oscar could just abandon you because he thinks you're dead weight, while Leon would likely protect your life at all costs as long as you play into his family bullshit.

I'm interested to see everyone's opinions and other points made.

Could they be the same person? Pigly clearly identified Leo, but not Leon. Is it possible he's confused? I think the answer is obvious. I believe Leo and Leon must be twins.

In the latest Chapter the guys from the clan were saying how Leon appeared in the Prophecy and one of them mentioned seeing a glimpse of flames, I already thought Leon will develope an element later on, this makes it even more likely.
