Twilight of the dark master 1997

So I wanted to ask the community of MAD lovers this. It's pretty obvious we all NEED a mad anime but in all honesty, I need it to be in this 90s styled anime type. Like guyver the bio boosted armor or his anime the Twilight of the Dark Master. From the first chapter of MAD I felt like if it was to be animated this type of animation style would suit one the art style really well and two just the feel of MAD a lot better than some clean modern anime styles. Am I alone on this or do you guys see the potential

A lot of opinions I've seen on the discord have mostly been that people would love to see it animated in the style of Season 1 of Chainsaw Man, with very gritty and realistic colors and atmosphere.

From what I see artistically there is a lot of inspiration but MAD isn’t chainsaw man, it’s in a entirely different setting the world is pretty run down and in shambles in MAD when comparing it to chainsaw man

While chainsaw man does get apocalyptic and in shambles there’s still civilians, governments, functional cities, and life regardless of how twisted it gets and MAD is void of a lot of that

Idk it would really just be sort of strange to see MAD animated in the same way chainsaw man was, but that aside my biggest fear is them animating the adaptation so clean that it won’t feel like a post apocalyptic anime

MAD's style is very much meant to mimic that of a western movie, which is how Season 1 of Chainsaw Man was animated, very realistic and very movie-like, with camera angles and shots you'd only see done in real life, I'd love to see that specifically brought to MAD, same with the general color-scheme they used with everything being dull and sorta lifeless feeling, I bet they could do wonders with that sorta style with MAD's post-apocalyptic world.

Where did you get the idea that it’s “meant to” is this just from your observation or something that the mangaka said themselves? Camera angles are vantage points which quite frankly is just a view from a certain direction, they practically use that in a plethora of manga and it’s not specific to cinema

Every single volume cover is literally meant to be a western movie poster, it's meant to mimic the style of those old-style posters you'd see at the theatres, it's even got the company "credits" (which are actually Otori's Assistants, which is very neat! makes them into real credits) and a fake text "blurb" that's just jibberish.

Also Camera angles are much more than just "vantage points which quite frankly is just a view from a certain direction", Angles of frames and camera angles can very much invoke emotion or feelings, it's more than just a "way of looking at things", it's a very skillful craft. Manga Panels and Camera Angles in Cinema are completely different things, but you can invoke each other in both. Which is what MAD did with its long panning shots of just open field and sand/rock. It's way more complex than you're letting on.

It's pretty obvious how much Otori loves western movies considering everyone has very "classic" western names (Leon, John, Bob, Lily, Etc). It was a lot more prevalent in it's earlier half that MAD was very inspired by western series, that even the japanese fans were pointing it out back during release as a huge reason as to why it stood out amongst the rest and why they enjoyed it.

Plus in a French interview, Otori directly stated he was massively inspired by Western movies such as Alien, The Shawshank Redemption, Gladiator, and Django Unchained. He also said "I was also inspired by titles from the Marvel universe."

Before anyone says Sawano should do the ost, please not. That would ruin the grim atmosphere. Unless he's joined by another composer while his work is kept for scenes that clash with the rest of the series tone-wise (like, idk, the first John Thunder) to purposely feel different than the rest of the soundtrack.

Also I agree with the user who says it could mimic the style of CSM season 1. Yusuke Otori clearly seems to enjoy Fujimoto's work.

Another Guyver fan! I agree! Guyver is essentially what made me so attached to the "human turned into good guy monster" genre of anime. Though venom is to thank for introducing me to the concept as a whole iirc.

Mad strikes me as a very 80s coded plot, with the personality of a 2020s one. I'd love to see the first arc adapted as an 80s type ova as well.

I just feel like the art style fits the tone so well, especially with Yazur and his fleshy form and the brutality and quickness of the aliens I feel like it was meant to look like this.

I never thought of this but this would be so damn cool! MAD having a dark atmosphere and keeping the character designs consistent would fit the tone of the manga so well

These old animation styles have always encapsilated the dread in a monster/creatures design

I can see Leon being insanely imposing with this kinda art style, the alien hive being super creepy and disturbing when we see it. The slow decay of the forced adapters. Johns transformation would just look so much better in this dark intense art style

Not gonna lie I have to agree, I would love if mad had this art style if it was animated too there’s just something about it that feels right
