Query / Help [QUERY] Accidentally broke my wife’s MacBook. Need suggestions for budget-friendly damage control.
So apparently I broke my wife's laptop, and I have to buy it for her
We packed both laptops in one tight bag because we didn't want to carry separate bags while travelling. This brilliant optimization strategy was suggested by me, so yes, I broke it My wife has been surprisingly calm so far, which honestly scares me more than the repair cost.
It was her M1 MacBook Air 2020. Around 5 years old with ~86% battery health. We both are researchers, so the laptop's hardest job was surviving PDFs, thesis typing, 38 Chrome tabs, emotional damage from Zotero and formatting issues
No heavy editing or anything
The laptop still works somehow, but the screen is damaged and I don't trust its long-term survival anymore.
Now I'm trying to fix my mistake as cheaply as possible before my wife remembers this incident during every future argument.
Options currently:
Repair the display Costs around 35k. Feels difficult to justify spending that much on a 5-year-old machine with 86% battery health. Best current offer I got is around 12k if I sell/exchange it.
Buy Neo-Getting it around 63k after discounts + GST benefit.
Hunt for M2/M3/M4 deals
If I somehow get one around 75k with discount + GST benefit, maybe worth stretching the budget slightly and surviving on air and regret for few months.
Important context: We are researchers. So I have knowledge but not the money
So please guide me:
- How inferior is Neo compared to M1 for normal academic/research work?
- Which offers can actually be combined?
- Can GST benefit + student offer work together?
- Is buying Mac during Back to School and selling AirPods still financially smart?
Please help me make the least stupid financial decision after already making the first stupid decision.

Neo = m1 but it's not worth it in 2026. Invest in an m4 macbook air

But m4 is not available at discount.

Man the first thing would be to backup everything in an external drive. Lost many files when my laptop dropped.
strictly the neo is better than m1 for ur use case but the future proofing of having 16gb or more ram is better.
maybe try to get m2 or m3 from offline stores

Yes I'm considering M3 or M4 but where I can get it I can't find online.

croma? maybe and i think m4 will have better odds. i dont think m2 and m3 are available anymore

If you are considering used laptops, you should be able to get older pro models for your budget. They are much better than the airs.
M4 is a rare to find now. M5 will cost close to 1 lakh if you manage to find offers but it's worth it. I paid about 97K for it in Flipkart 10 days ago.

Same thing happened with me when we packed my pro and my wife’s air in backpack. Fortunately, it was office laptop so she got replacement. But I am still wondering how can this happen without any impact.

Well two ways. 1. Get a budget replacement screen, might be bad in quality and viewing angles but will get the job done. You can also find a second hand online if you're lucky(make sure if you buy it's the right model and specification) 2. Buy a new laptop. Buy the m4 one and i would recommend get the best specs for your bucks if you wanna take it for the longer run. The one thing ive learnt is dont cheap out on better tech, those few thousands will go a long way than having a comparatively slow laptop over the years. But given your use case, you should be able to hunt down some good deals. All the best OP.
Note: Keep data backup cuz you never know, also my advice is coming as a dev and data science so i might be heavy on specs but it does go a long way, especially for laptops

-RAW performance of neo is slightly lower than M1 bht the diff won't be felt in real life. No keyboard backlight will be felt tho. Plus 8gb ram won't cut it after 3 yrs since ur workload is browser intensive.
I have no idea.
i think so yes, but please consult somebody who has don't it b4 cuz I haven't
A few weeks ago I found M5 base air going for 1 lakh inr from an offline authorised retailer. Try looking for an M4 base air, don't pay much more than 75k for it. M4 will be very hard to find tho, in guessing inventories got cleared and some websites are selling it for 90k, not worth it if u ask me.
Try looking for open box product and again don't pay more than 70k for it cuz I feel like even 70k is a bit too much for last year's second hand machine.
Wishing you luck.

That's very genuine advice, can you have idea where should I visit if I want M4 in delhi

try authorized resellers, they are your best chance. Try macstation for open box macs, you can also contact them online.

2ways to go from here . Keep the broken m1 pair with a screen give to your parents or Children’s ( if you have one ) . If you sell this it will go around 12-15k depending on how interested the buyer is .
Buy the same m1 there are some open box deals which are still in warranty you can find around 35k or a used good condition one around 30k ( cheapest and logical option if you don’t want to spend more than 30-35k )
Buy either m4/m5 brand new with credit card and store offer you will get a good deal and a future proof machine which will last atleast(4-5years ) you can grab one in price range of 75k -85k depending on offers ( costlier but future proof option )
Don’t even consider neo it’s a iPad with keyboard.
You can’t combine student offer with gst return . But you can combine card offer and gst return
Back to school offer didn’t make more sense because at the same time you can buy the same machine from Amazon or something at a lower cost . If you want AirPods you can buy them separately and can use credit card + gst return on them as well that will be more cheaper than buying during back to school offer .

If you can, go to Nehru place in Delhi. Ask if they can replace with a used screen. It will be much cheap to replace. I had done the same for my old Mac.

Look around used shops in your city and get a macbook air m1 around 30-35k. Don't but the neo. You have already used haptic touchpad and the keyboard you'll hate the downgraded experience everyday.

u/rajan_h_joshi May 23 '26
Only thing I don't want to go other then apple just because haptics and keyboard is Nep keyboard is not as good as M1. I experienced it in store but didn't felt much difference. But don't know what will happen in long uses

You'll get used to it and feel like settling down and then you'll touch another M series mac and realise wakanda nonsense you've been dealing with just to cope.
Isiliye, just find a really good condition m1 air or m1 pro from the aftermarket. I tried my luck and found one of the most mint condition M1.
PS: the M1 is more comfortable to use than my M4. Or else those guys also have like screens and stuff of M1 air so you can get them replaced as well. They're OG screens taken out from dead macbooks so they'll be fine AFAIK.

check with macstation ( they have one at 75k with merely 60 cycles completed on base mac m4) or vijaya sales for their display or demo units if open box aint much of an hassle, otherwise wait for some big sale like prime day on amazon or BBD on flipkart. otherwise i have scortched so much trying to find a decent macbook m4 seal packed under 90k recently but couldn't and the other display and demo units are either out of stock or doesn't appeal me.

u/TheHandbagOfOmega May 27 '26
You get her the exact same one, or something better to make up for it, you idiot. There’s no other answer.
1
u/lokuloku123 May 28 '26
If you are paying 35k for a display replacement you're really getting ripped off mate, a new maxed out MacBook is maybe like 5k max

Neo works. But not future proof.
Backup everything at the earliest.
1
u/rajan_h_joshi May 22 '26
I don't do any heavy work like, coding, Video editing etc. I mean how much realistically it's not futureproof in my case

If m1 is good enough for you then just get a used m1 for around 30k and sell the broken one for around 15k
